Page 2 JUNE NEWSLETTER VOLUME 2, ISSUE 8 Page 3 PONCA TRIBE OF OKLAHOMA VETERANS MEMORIAL On December 9, 2014 the Ponca Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma received a letter addressed to the Trib- al Chairman Earl. S. Howe, III which informed him that the Ponca Tribe Of Indians of Oklahoma had been awarded a grant for the construction of a Veterans Memorial at the cemetery. The Ponca Tribe throughout the years designated an area for the burial of veterans and many veterans are buried throughout the Ponca Tribal Cemetery. This memorial is dedicated to all tribal veterans and those affil- iated with the Ponca Tribe of Oklahoma who served in the Armed Forces. The slogan engraved on the memorial wall states: “When the bugle call for military arose, many brave Ponca answered. Some did so before we were made citizens of this great country. This dedication and honor has always been a strong trait among the Ponca People”. During World War I there were a number of men who served and all returned home unharmed. However, casualties arose amongst the Ponca people during World II, Korea and Vietnam. The Ponca Tribe alone had over 9 men who were Killed In Action and one died in captivity. Many Ponca Indian women enlisted during World War II and through the different tours Ponca women have served and are still serving in the military. One of the walls built has inscribed on it the names of the deceased military. Just this year the Ponca Tribe lost three individuals whose names will be inscribed on the wall: Timothy George Littlevoice-Army, Timothy Buffalohead-Army, Rodney Lee Flood-Marine Corps. It was not our intention to leave any name off and we deeply apologize if this happened. Please do not hesitate to call us and give us the name, branch and years of service of your loved one at (580) 762-8104.
