Journal of Religion & Society
Journal of Religion & Society Volume 6 (2004) ISSN 1522-5658 David, Mickey Mouse, and the Evolution of an Icon1 Lowell K. Handy, American Theological Library Association Abstract The transformation of an entertaining roguish figure to an institutional icon is investigated with respect to the figures of Mickey Mouse and the biblical King David. Using the three-stage evolution proposed by R. Brockway, the figures of Mickey and David are shown to pass through an initial entertaining phase, a period of model behavior, and a stage as icon. The biblical context for these shifts is basically irretrievable so the extensive materials available for changes in the Mouse provide sufficient information on personnel and social forces to both illuminate our lack of understanding for changes in David while providing some comparative material for similar development. Introduction [1] One can perceive a progression in the development of the figure of David from the rather unsavory character one encounters in the Samuel narratives, through the religious, righteous king of Chronicles, to the messianic abstraction of the Jewish and Christian traditions.2 The movement is a shift from “trickster,” to “Bourgeoisie do-gooder,” to “corporate image” proposed for the evolution of Mickey Mouse by Robert Brockway.3 There are, in fact, several interesting parallels between the portrayals of Mickey Mouse and David, but simply a look at the context that produced the changes in each character may help to understand the visions of David in three surviving biblical textual traditions in light of the adaptability of the Mouse for which there is a great deal more contextual data to investigate. -

FILM 1/30e No.2 Mr.and Mrs.Legend came to Japan Mr.and Mrs. Davis (Photo:T.Namiki) Mr. Mark Davis, a legendary animator at Disney Studio, and his wife visiting Japan. On Oct. 1995, Mr. Mark Davis, visited Japan with his wife, Alice, for 17 days. He is a great animator ( At Disney Studio, they call "imagineer designer" ) who has had varied careers since he has taken a part in the management of Disneyland with Walt Disney from the beginning, he's been here several times to operate Tokyo Disneyland. But the contact with people in animation field was limited. This visit was at the invitation of the company which sells the serge, and many events were held. This was the first time his visit Japan got a lot of publicity in the media. We are glad that he was introduced not only to the people in Animation trade but also to the general public. He is a member of " Nine Old Man" , the group of skillful animators who produced many long animation cartoon films of Disney. He was the leading animator and character designer for "Bambi ", "Cinderella", "Peter pan", "101 Dalmatians", "Sleeping Beauty", etc. He also took a part in story making, stage setting, layout in some films such as Bambi. He drew villains like "Cruella de Ville" and "Meleficent" with sharp lines, and he designed American Beauty like "Tinker Bell", "Princess Aurora" and "Cinderella" simply and nobly. Few other animators can draw dessins as accurately as he did. I cannot think of those who match him except other members of "Nine Old Men" and only the late Mr. -

Disney comics from Italy♦ © Francesco Stajano 1997-1999 http://i.am/filologo.disneyano/ A Roberto, amico e cugino So what exactly shall we look at? First of all, the Introduction fascinating “prehistory” (early Thirties) where a few pioneering publishers and creators established a Disney Most of us die-hard Disney fans are in love with those presence in Italy. Then a look at some of the authors, seen comics since our earliest childhood; indeed, many of us through their creations. Because comics are such an learnt to read from the words in Donald’s and Mickey’s obviously visual medium, the graphical artists tend to get balloons. Few of us, though, knew anything about the the lion’s share of the critics’ attention; to compensate for creators of these wonderful comics: they were all this, I have decided to concentrate on the people who calligraphically signed by that “Walt Disney” guy in the actually invent the stories, the script writers (though even first page so we confidently believed that, somewhere in thus I’ve had to miss out many good ones). This seems to America, a man by that name invented and drew each and be a more significant contribution to Disney comics every one of those different stories every week. As we studies since, after all, it will be much easier for you to grew up, the quantity (too many) and quality (too read a lot about the graphical artists somewhere else. And different) of the stories made us realise that this man of course, by discussing stories I will also necessarily could not be doing all this by himself; but still, we touch on the work of the artists anyway. -

Two Vanishing Game Birds—The Woodcock and the Wood Duck
TWO VANISHING GAME BIRDS—THE WOODCOCK AND THE WOOD DUCK. By A. K. FrsnEE, OrniihoJogisl, Biological Survey. INTRODUCTION. Unless strong protective measures are soon adopted the woodcock and wood duck, two popular and valuable game birds, will become extinct—the woodcock absolutely, the wood duck over a large part of its range. It is the purpose of the present paper to call attention to the impending extinction of these birds, to point out the causes, and, so far as possible, to suggest means of prevention. These game birds differ materially in habits as well as in other par- ticulars, but the conditions affecting their decrease are very similar. As winter approaches they leave their summer homos, where they have been scattered over broad areas, and gradually work southward until finally they become more or less concentrated in their respective haunts in the Southern States. Within the confines of this winter home, where almost no protection is afforded them, they are slaughtered in large numbers; and as the Southern Suites place little restriction on their export, they are shipped North in quantities limited mainly by the demands of the market or the endurance of the gunners. Not only are the birds subjected to this exterminating treatment throughout the winter, but when the season of migration comes and they return to their summer homes they fare little better; for a majority of the States in which they are found permit them to be shot while nesting or at the time when the young are unable to prop- erly care for themselves. In view of these facts it is not surprising that the woodcock, with its limited distribution and moderate fecund- ity, is very rapidly passing away, and that the wood duck has disap- peared or become rare in many places where once it was common. -

Alex Film Society and The Glendale I-listorical Society in association with Glendale Arts Present TNA I\J rOR TNt: Ml:MORIt:JI July 13, 2019 I Alex Theatre THICK STEAS * RDP CAL DRINKS 818-507-1510 Congratulations to Glendale Arts, the Alex Film SocietV, and The Glendale Historical SocietV for their outstanding program "Thankg for the Memorieg/" at the Alex Theatre. WELCOME Welcome to "Thanks for the Memories!" The Alex Theatre is an extraordinary and special place in Glendale, and three of the City's special organizations with connections to the Alex have come together tonight to bring you an exceptional program. We're so happy that you've joined us this evening to share fond memories of this place, and to remember a time when Brand Boulevard was lined with movie theaters. Film, architecture and history converge to this day, as the Alex continues to be the site of dozens of productions. Memories continue to be made every month. Glendale has many connections to I-lollywood and the film industry - from Nell Shipman, the local multi-hyphenate who 100 years ago wrote, directed, produced and starred in productions on the silent screen, to Clarence Nash, the Glendale resident who provided the voice for Donald Duck. Tonight, you'll see other stars, films and images that recall a Golden Age when Glendale's movie screens flickered with the newest releases from its neighbor, I-lollywood. A special thanks to Adam Felber, our always sharp and talented host, for taking us on a nostalgic and entertaining journey this evening. We very much hope you enjoy the show, and to our grand Alex and all the other theaters that once stood on Brand Boulevard, thanks for the memories ...
