Copyright by Sarah Sugarbaker 2009 Abstract In April of 2009 the Ohio State University Theatre Department produced Godspell, a musical originally conceived by John‐Michael Tebelak with music by Stephen Schwartz. This production was built and technically rehearsed in the Thurber Theatre, and then moved to the Southern Theatre in downtown Columbus, OH. As the scenic designer of this production I developed an environment in which the actors and director created their presentation of the text. Briefly, the director’s concept (Appendix A) for this production was to find a way to make the production relevant to the local population. Godspell centers around the creation and support of a community, so by choosing to reference the City Center Mall, an empty shopping center in downtown Columbus, the need for making a change as a community was emphasized. This environment consisted of three large walls that resembled an obscured version of the Columbus skyline, inspired by advertisements within the shopping center. Each wall had enlarged newspapers that could be seen under a paint treatment of vibrant colors. The headlines on these papers referenced articles that the local paper has written about the situation at the shopping center, therefore making the connection more clear.

    Cast, Crew & Orchestra Principals, Featured Vocalists & Seniors Andrew Aukerman - Orchestra This is Andy Aukerman's second year as a violinist in the Orchestra pit, having completely enjoyed being a part of Thoroughly Modern Millie. He has been a member of the Orchestra since 3rd grade and made PMEA Honors Orchestra this year. Andy is looking forward to life as a college student next year, hopefully at Rice University, or perhaps at UT Austin, Pitt, or NCSU. He plans on studying biomedical engineering, with aspirations to change the medical field and save lives. Andy also pole vaults and is the co-president of Peer-to-Peer Empowerment. Andy would like to thank his parents for their never ending support and Ms. Panza for her wonderful direction. Additionally, he thanks his teachers for the knowledge and wisdom, both academic and non-academic, he has gained during his 4 years at Pine-Richland. Melanie Berexa - Catherine Melanie, a senior, is so thrilled to be playing the role of Catherine in this year’s musical. Last year, Melanie played Ruth, a Pricilla Girl, in Thoroughly Modern Millie. Before joining the PR Musicals, Melanie was a student at Lincoln Park Performing School where she participated in The Secret Garden, White Christmas, The Miracle Worker, and several other shows. She has also participated in Jeter Backyard Theatre and recently played the role of Rose in Bye Bye Birdie. Melanie would like to thank Jim Scriven, Laura Wurzell, Joy Hess, Carole Rost, her fellow cast members, crew and orchestra for making this musical such a great experience.

This spring, we will bring 2 musicals to life; one in our black box theater and one at St. Joseph University’s Bluett Theater. Actors interested in auditioning for our spring productions must read this packet thoroughly to learn about the auditions, rehearsals and performances for each production. In this packet you will find: Information about auditions and callbacks Details about rehearsals and performances for each show Audition selections Forms to be filled out and turned in during your audition Preliminary Auditions Monday, January 23rd and Tuesday, January 24th from 6-8:30pm You can sign up for your audition time slot through our website (www.wolfperformingartscenter.org). All actors will audition for the directors of INTO THE WOODS, Jr. and PIPPIN at the same time. Audition monologues can be found in this packet. Callbacks Following the preliminary auditions, each director will call back actors to read for specific roles in each play. Callbacks will be held on Thursday, January 26th from 5-9pm and Saturday, January 28th from 10am – 2pm. Those who are needed for callbacks will be notified via email by Wednesday, January 25th. Those who do not receive a callback may still be cast. Casting Cast lists will be sent out via email by Monday, January 30th. Casting at Wolf PAC is based on three main criteria: talent, behavior and availability. Through his effective techniques of innovative choreography and story-telling, Fosse revolutionized the American Broadway industry. I specifically analyzed the popular musicals Chicago, Sweet Charity, and Pippin to support this thesis. In order to investigate my topic, I watched stage productions of these three musicals. I also went to a live production of Chicago at a local theatre, Players by the Sea. It was beneficial to see these productions because I could analyze the choreography first-hand. And I could see how it worked alongside with the story-telling. However, these productions were not Fosse's originals, but they only showed how influential his techniques had become. I also began researching information about the Broadway industry in the 1970's. I discovered articles about lost elements of choreography, as well as reviews on Fosse's work.
