JAN MATTHIAS KLEIN Mosel, Germany Staffelter Hof first appears in texts from in 862 AD. At almost 1,200 years old, it is one of the oldest companies of any kind in the world. The vineyard holdings span 11.5ha (10.2ha planted) of diverse vineyards such as Paradies, Kirchlay, Letterlay, Steffensberg, and as far south as the Dhroner Hofberg. The winery itself is located in Kröv, a village in the heart of the middle Mosel on a sweeping 180⁰ curve of the river between the old, quiet winemaking villages of Wolf and Kinheim. This is not a hotbed of avant-garde creativity. Yet Jan Matthias Klein, a 7th generation winemaker at this estate, is doing something extraordinary here, crafting naturweine the likes of which have rarely been seen in the history of the Mosel. Mosel Fine Wines “The Independent Review of Mosel Riesling” By Jean Fisch and David Rayer von Othegraven Weingut von Othegraven (Kanzem – Saar) Andreas Barth is quite smitten by the quality of the 2017 vintage, which proved again quite extraordinary in its development: “Bud break in the Saar was not particularly early and the very early harvest was a surprise for everybody. The frost did hit us, but not as much as some of my colleagues in the Middle Mosel or at my own Estate in the Terrassenmosel. We suffered yield losses equally through evaporation in the autumn as the grape skins became quite porous. In the end, we lost roughly 25% versus a normal vintage. We started our harvest earlier than in recent vintages, at the end of September, because we wanted to keep the freshness and elegance of a real Kabinett, i.e. 80° Oechsle plus minus 1-2°, which was again possible. The ripening process was no longer that big in October, which proved somewhat surprising given that the vines had still their foliage. This was however a godsend gift as we could harvest until the end of October and thereby had the time to make the necessary selections for our different bottlings. We also made some botrytis selections, which yielded several Auslese as well as one TBA. Overall, 2017 proves a beautiful and very expressive vintage with great vibrant acidity, in particular in the fruity wines.” The Estate was able to produce its full portfolio, including an auction Kabinett and Spätlese from the Kanzemer Altenberg as well as GG bottlings from the Altenberg and Bockstein. -

KARL JOSEF Piesporter Michelsberg QbA Mosel, Germany GRAPE VARIETIES 70% Müller-Thurgau, 30% Riesling VINIFICATION The picturesque Mosel river valley is one of the world’s great wine treasures. Many Mosel wines flirt with perfection, but the region’s true virtue is that nearly all its vineyards will produce distinctive, delicious Riesling if tended with care. The climate here is cold for wine grapes, but the Mosel has a few tricks that turn this liability into an asset: steep slopes, slate stone soils, and the river itself. Together these factors maximize the long, sunny growing season and provide just enough heat to slowly ripen grapes and develop Mosel Riesling’s unique character with stunning clarity. Moselland growers are scattered throughout the valley, and this provides the flexibility to produce compelling wines with consistency and quality in every vintage. Grapes are harvested separately, according to vineyard site, and must weight. Lots are vinified individually in small stainless-steel tanks under temperature control using selected yeast. The wine is stored in tank until bottling, so only the freshest wine is shipped to the market. ABOUT THE WINERY Karl Josef is produced by Moselland, a grower’s cooperative famous for producing premium quality wines at competitive prices. What is a grower’s cooperative, exactly? A cooperative is a group of wine grape growers who share their resources to produce, bottle, and market wine. Making wine independently requires investment and time that is practically beyond the means of most farmers. Cooperatives play an essential role by providing growers with access to economy of scale, a vocal role in production, and a fair share of profits. -

RECHTS UND LINKS DER MOSEL Pfarrbrief der Pfarreiengemeinschaft Brauneberg St. Remigius Filzen St. Josef Kesten St. Georg Maring-Noviand St. Lambertus Monzel St. Nikolaus Osann St. Peter Veldenz St. Marien Wintrich St. Stephanus Nr. 09 – vom 28.08.2021 bis zum 26.09.2021 „Fürchte dich nicht, ich helfe dir!“ (Jes 41, 13) 1 Liebe Mitchristen in unserer Pfarreiengemeinschaft, liebe Leserinnen und Leser des Pfarrbriefes, in der Bibel heißt es bei Jesaja 41, 13: „Denn ich der Herr, dein Gott, ergreife deine rechte Hand und sage dir: Fürchte dich nicht, ich helfe dir!“ Starkregen und Überflutungen änderte Mitte Juli hier in Rheinland-Pfalz und in NRW das Leben so vieler Menschen. Zerstörungen, Leid, Not und Tod wurden uns durch die Medien gezeigt. Tröstlich ist es aber zu sehen, wie viel Hilfe dann aufgebracht wird. Von Nah und Fern kommen Hilfsgüter, tatkräftige Helfer und viele Geldspenden. Auch in unserer Pfarreiengemeinschaft gab und gibt es die verschiedensten Hilfsaktionen. Dafür kann man gar nicht genug danken. Doch auch hier vor Ort wird immer wieder Hilfe benötigt. Wenn der kranke Nachbar nicht aus dem Haus kommt, wenn jemand eine Mitfahrgelegenheit braucht oder wenn jemand einfach nur ein Gespräch braucht. Da sind dann kleine Hilfen angesagt – klein, aber nötig und wichtig. Jesus hat in seiner Zeit vielen Menschen geholfen und es hat den Menschen gutgetan. Er hat mit ihnen gesprochen, hat ihre Nöte verstanden und den Menschen Wertschätzung und Ansehen gegeben. Hilfe geben ist etwas sehr Wertvolles. Doch Hilfe annehmen ist nicht immer einfach. Um Hilfe bitten braucht auch Überwindung. Oft es doch einfacher, als man denkt und der Gefragte hilft gerne. -
