Classic and expressive dry Riesling. Producer Note The legendary Schloss Johannisberg is steeped in history. The vineyards were planted on the orders of the Roman Emperor Charlemagne. Planted solely with Riesling grapes in 1720, Schloss Johannisberg was the world's first Riesling Estate and plays a significant part in wine history. It was here in 1775 that the Spätlese quality was discovered using late picked grapes suffering from "noble rot". Following this discovery, in 1787 the estate gave Auslese, Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese to the wine world. Schloss Johannisberg is a single vineyard designation in its own right and one of a handful of German vineyards that does not have to display a village name on the label. Vineyard The grapes come from the single vineyard of Schloss Johannisberg. The south facing vineyard is steep, with a 45° gradient and is situated at between 114 metres to 181 metres above sea level. The forest on the top of the Taunus Mountains protects the vineyard from cold winds from the north. To the south, the River Rhine gently flows in front of the estate, in the foothills of the vineyard. The 50° parallel runs directly through the vineyard and the unique soils of Taunus quartz, topped with loam and rich loess retains moisture and heat, encouraging the vines to ripen. This soil formation imparts the classic mineral characteristic which is evident in this wine.

This "late harvest" wine is traditionally pressed from grapes that are harvested after they freeze on the vine. "Eiswein" literally means "ice wine," and is called so on some labels. Wine Estates in Germany BOLLIG-LEHNERT Trittenheim & Piesport Region: MOSEL-SAAR-RUWER Vineyards: Trittenheim (Apotheke, Altärchen) Piesport (Goldtröpfchen, Falkenberg) Dhron (Dhron- Hofberger) Varietals: Riesling Owner: the Bollig family Winemaker: Stefan Bollig Remarks: appealing, light & stylish, crisp predicate Mosel wines Stefan Bollig, is young (vintage 1961!) and passionately devoted to his work, is a fine example of the new generation of Mosel vintners. The family has been producing wine since the 17th Century, but new cellars and house have been built on the outskirts of Trittenheim. Stefan and his wife Jill live in the former estate house in Piesport at the foot of the Goldtröpfchen vineyard (one of the most famous vineyard sites in the Mosel, if not all of Germany), welcoming visitors at their quaint Gutsauschank (wine-pub with light local food). The family tends to the 4 hectares (10 acres) of estate vineyards themselves. These steeply sloping vineyards are composed mainly of slatey soil that imparts a delicate mineral flavor to the wines. Stefan has been managing the estate since 1987, after completing his viticultural studies and practical experience in Trier and Bad Kreuznach, although his father is still actively involved. Dedication to the estate and costly investments has achieved a high standard of quality. Not many small estates would invest into such an expensive and modern low-pressure tank press which is so essential for producing a clear and clean must. The wines ferment and mature in wooden Fuder (1,000 liters) casks in the cool underground cellars, the natural sweetness being retained, where appropriate. Stefan Bollig's wines are stylish, crisp and classic with a fine fruity elegance and good mineral content, not showing excessive sweetness.

Best of Riesling 2020: the Best Rieslings of the Year Present Themselves (Digital)
PRESS RELEASE Neustadt (Germany), 18 June 2020 Best of Riesling 2020: The best Rieslings of the year present themselves (digital) The best Rieslings of the year were presented today in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse (Germany). The world's largest international Riesling competition honored the best in a virtual awards ceremony. This year, a total of 2,017 wines from all the great and important Riesling growing regions of the world were tasted and evaluated. Rieslings from the Mittelrhein region were the winners of this year's Best of Riesling competition. A total of 5 wines are among the first-placed, all from the famous steep slope Bopparder Hamm, which is divided into the individual single vineyards Engelstein, Feuerlay and Mandelstein. The two wineries Matthias Müller and Weingart from Spay, which have been successful with Best of Riesling in previous years, will be complemented this year by the up-and-coming Didinger winery from Osterspai. Among the first-place winners are well-known names such as Weingut A. Christmann and Philipp Kuhn (both in the Palatinate), Weingut Künstler (Rheingau) or Weingut am Stein (Franconia). But also many up-and-coming wineries such as the Eymann and Johann F. Ohler wineries (both in the Palatinate) or the Didinger winery (Mittelrhein) are among the winners. The most successful growing regions are the Palatinate with a total of 399 awards, followed by Rheinhessen (287) and the Mosel (269). Internationally, Rieslings from Austria (43), Alsace (30), Luxembourg (11), but also the Czech Republic, Australia and Italy scored well. Special prizes in the competition were awarded to the Horst Sauer winery (Best Steep-Slope Riesling Dry), the Cave Vinicole de Hunawihr (Best European Riesling Dry) and the Cleebronn-Güglingen cooperative (Best Riesling Dry in Food Retail).
