Asnyk╎s Notebook of Rhymes
ACTA UNIVERSITATIS LODZIENSIS Folia Litteraria Polonica 4(55) 2019 http://dx.doi.org/10.18778/1505-9057.55.02 Tadeusz Budrewicz* https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4557-7260 Asnyk’s notebook of rhymes Usage of the notebook In the Jagiellonian Library in Krakow, among Adam Asnyk’s preserved documents, under the reference number 7185 I, is the poet’s notebook entitled “with sets of words which rhyme.”1 Maria Szypowska included a photograph of a fragment of a page from it in her book entitled Asnyk znany i nieznany2. It is impossible to define when the note- book was created. At the end of the notebook, the poet wrote “21 January” (sh. 57) and “Thursday, 7 December” with a note “I gave for charcoals 1 PLN” (sh. 57). The mana- gerial nature of the note does not help in establishing its chronology. Neither does the note on sheet 56, where the poet included an “upside down” stanza of a poem, as it was most probably an attempt at a work he eventually abandoned. Some chronology may be defined through the fact that in the record of words which rhymed, Asnyk wrote: * Professor, Pedagogical University of Cracow, Chair of Polish Literature of the 20th Century, ul. Podchorążych 2, 30-084 Krakow, [email protected] 1 Jagiellonian Library, manuscript, ref no. 7185 I, inventory no. 16261: “Adam Asnyk. Adam Asnyk’s notebook with sets of words which rhyme. Second half of the 19th c., paper, 12.5 x 6.5 cm, sh. /IV/ 56 (sh. 10 missing). Single-sidedly inscribed sheets: 2.” Consecutive segments consisting of several words in the notebook begin in capital letters, words after the first word are written in lower case. -

The Use of the Polish Folk Music Elements and the Fantasy Elements in the Polish Fantasy on Original Themes In
THE USE OF THE POLISH FOLK MUSIC ELEMENTS AND THE FANTASY ELEMENTS IN THE POLISH FANTASY ON ORIGINAL THEMES IN G-SHARP MINOR FOR PIANO AND ORCHESTRA OPUS 19 BY IGNACY JAN PADEREWSKI Yun Jung Choi, B.A., M.M. Dissertation Prepared for the Degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS May 2007 APPROVED: Adam Wodnicki, Major Professor Jeffrey Snider, Minor Professor Joseph Banowetz, Committee Member Graham Phipps, Director of Graduate Studies in the College of Music James C. Scott, Dean of the College of Music Sandra L. Terrell, Dean of the Robert B. Toulouse School of Graduate Studies Choi, Yun Jung, The Use of the Polish Folk Music Elements and the Fantasy Elements in the Polish Fantasy on Original Themes in G-sharp Minor for Piano and Orchestra, Opus 19 by Ignacy Jan Paderewski. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), May 2007, 105 pp., 5 tables, 65 examples, references, 97 titles. The primary purpose of this study is to address performance issues in the Polish Fantasy, Op. 19, by examining characteristics of Polish folk dances and how they are incorporated in this unique work by Paderewski. The study includes a comprehensive history of the fantasy in order to understand how Paderewski used various codified generic aspects of the solo piano fantasy, as well as those of the one-movement concerto introduced by nineteenth-century composers such as Weber and Liszt. Given that the Polish Fantasy, Op. 19, as well as most of Paderewski’s compositions, have been performed more frequently in the last twenty years, an analysis of the combination of the three characteristic aspects of the Polish Fantasy, Op.19 - Polish folk music, the generic rhetoric of a fantasy and the one- movement concerto - would aid scholars and performers alike in better understanding the composition’s engagement with various traditions and how best to make decisions about those traditions when approaching the work in a concert setting. -
Boccherini and the Prussian Court the Famous Praise of Boccherini By
Filling the void – Boccherini and the Prussian Court The famous praise of Boccherini by the French Violin Master, Jean Baptiste Cartier, says it all: (Quote): Si Dieu voulait parler à l’homme en musique, il le ferait avec les œuvres de Haydn, mais s’Il desirait Lui-même écouter de la musique, Il choisirait Boccherini." “If God wanted to speak to men through music, He would do it with the oeuvres of Haydn, but if He himself wished to listen to music, He would choose Boccherini”. Elegance and lucidity, softness and sensibility are some of the outstanding qualities of Luigi Boccherini´s music. In his time he was one of the most loved composers in Europe, one of a few. His music was held in high esteem in Spain, France, the Netherlands and Belgium as well as in Scandinavia, Austria and in Germany. During the short period of 14 years, from 1783 to 1797, chamber music compositions by Boccherini were played frequently in Berlin and in Potsdam by the prince and heir Friedrich Wilhelm, who was a nephew of the late Friedrich II, “the Great” and a passionate cello player. He became King of Prussia after the death of his predessor on August 17th 1786. Already at the beginning of this year, on the 21st of January, Friedrich Wilhelm had appointed Boccherini to be his “compositore della nuestra camera”. From that time on Boccherini delivered about twelve new works of chamber music every year to the Prussian Court. Boccherini´s service was rewarded by 1000 Prussian crowns (Taler) yearly. From now on Boccherini dedicated all his compositions to the King of Prussia and he always signed his letters with the words “compositor di camera di S. -

An Ottoman Global Moment
AN OTTOMAN GLOBAL MOMENT: WAR OF SECOND COALITION IN THE LEVANT A Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Georgetown University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy In History By Kahraman Sakul, M.A Washington, DC November, 18, 2009 Copyright 2009 by Kahraman Sakul All Rights Reserved ii AN OTTOMAN GLOBAL MOMENT: WAR OF SECOND COALITION IN THE LEVANT Kahraman Sakul, M.A. Dissertation Advisor: Gabor Agoston, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This dissertation aims to place the Ottoman Empire within its proper context in the Napoleonic Age and calls for a recognition of the crucial role of the Sublime Porte in the War of Second Coalition (1798-1802). The Ottoman-Russian joint naval expedition (1798-1800) to the Ionian Islands under the French occupation provides the framework for an examination of the Ottoman willingness to join the European system of alliance in the Napoleonic age which brought the victory against France in the Levant in the War of Second Coalition (1798-1802). Collections of the Ottoman Archives and Topkapı Palace Archives in Istanbul as well as various chronicles and treatises in Turkish supply most of the primary sources for this dissertation. Appendices, charts and maps are provided to make the findings on the expedition, finance and logistics more readable. The body of the dissertation is divided into nine chapters discussing in order the global setting and domestic situation prior to the forming of the second coalition, the Adriatic expedition, its financial and logistical aspects with the ensuing socio-economic problems in the Morea, the Sublime Porte’s relations with its protectorate – The Republic of Seven United Islands, and finally the post-war diplomacy. -
The Scuola Dalmata Di San Giorgio E Trifone a Place for the Dalmatian Community in Venice
Cultural Heritage. Scenarios 2015-2017 edited by Simona Pinton and Lauso Zagato The Scuola Dalmata di San Giorgio e Trifone A Place for the Dalmatian Community in Venice Silvia Zanlorenzi (Università degli Studi di Padova, Italia) Abstract The largest part of references available until today, on the Scuola dalmata di San Giorgio e Trifone tend to emphasize the role of Venice’ Dalmatian community with respect to the courageous contribution given in the course of the long-time’ conflicts against the Turks. The aim of this paper is to show instead, through the personal stories of the Scuola’s members and chiefs (Guardian grande), how they were able to distinguish themselves in other type of occupations which gained them a relevant position in town, as solid contributors not only to the economic life of Venice, but also to the cultural and spiritual one. Moreover, it will be shown how, at the end of Republic independence, in the conclusion of the XVIII century, their gradual integration as ‘Venetians’ made them suitable for a larger commitment as “trainers of italianity”, even in other regions of Italy ready to unify into a national State.
