Qualitative Sociology Review Volume VII, Issue 3 – December 2011 Krzysztof T. Konecki University of Lodz, Poland Book Review: Yoga Body. The Origins Of Modern Posture Practice by Marc Singleton. Oxford University Press, 2010 Contemporary interest in yoga in the West is for sure one of the reasons for Marc Singleton to write this book. This is a very important book because it fights the stereotype concerning origins of contemporary hatha-yoga practiced in the West. The book is a marvelous historical analysis of contemporary hatha-yoga development, the one we know in the West from popular hatha-yoga schools, commercials, celebrity images (i.e., Madonna, Sting, Jennifer Aniston, Drew Barrymore, Matthew McConaughey, etc.). After reading this book, yoga will no longer be the same, as we have perceived it earlier on as being an original Indian spiritual or physical practice. It turns out, that the West had a strong influence on the development of contemporary yoga, also the same as practiced in India. Contemporary yoga is also our, western and modern, invention. Yoga, especially the practice of asanas, has become a very popular activity in the western world. Yoga, focused on doing certain positions and physical exercises, has also become a huge business. Hatha-yoga styles and positions are often patented and protected by ownership and franchised. Equipment useful in yoga practice is sold and yoga positions are used in mobile phone commercials, yoghurt commercials and other commercials. According to Singleton, in 2008, only in the USA, practitioners spent 5.7 billion dollars on yoga lessons, holidays with yoga and products connected with practicing yoga, which is about half of Nepal’s gross national income (p.

A Traditional Exercise Program Jordan Burkhart*, Maureen McKenna and Jennifer Hill Department of Physical Therapy, Wheeling Jesuit University, Wheeling, West Virginia, USA Abstract The purpose of this study was to compare the results of Wii™ yoga versus a traditional structured exercise intervention regarding posture and self-esteem. The data were analyzed using a bivariate correlation and repeated measures 2-way ANOVA with the level of alpha set at p < .05. Four participants (4 females) from Wheeling Jesuit University took part in the study. Two females completed a traditional exercise intervention, consisting of strengthening and stretching exercises from a certified personal trainer for 6 weeks, 3 times a week. The other 2 female participants completed the Wii™ yoga for the same number of sessions. Self-esteem was measured by implementing the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale to the participants before the exercise intervention and after the exercise intervention. No significant difference was found using SPSS™ Version 19.0 in the study. However, the data indicate that if there had been a larger sample size, it would have increased the statistical power of the study showing that there could have been a statistically significant difference. Introduction target the postural muscles. These poses were made more challenging every 3 weeks.

The Subtle Body: Religious, Spiritual, Health-Related, or All Three? A Look Into the Subtle Physiology of Traditional and Modern Forms of Yoga Kathryn E. Heislup RELG 401: Senior Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Major in Religion University of Mary Washington April 20, 2020 2 Notions of subtle body systems have migrated and changed throughout India and Tibet over many years with much controversy; the movement of these ideas to the West follows a similar controversial path, and these developments in both Asia and the West exemplify how one cannot identify a singular, legitimate, “subtle body”. Asserting that there is only one legitimate teaching, practice, and system of the subtle body is problematic and inappropriate. The subtle body refers to assumed energy points within the human body that cannot be viewed by the naked eye, but is believed by several traditions to be part of our physical existence. Indo-Tibetan notions of a subtle body do include many references to similar ideas when it comes to this type of physiology, but there has never been one sole agreement on a legitimate identification or intended use.
