At the Cathedral, active membership is a requirement for the celebration of a marriage or baptism, for one to be eligible to be a Godparent or Conformation sponsor, and for special benefits such as tuition subsidy at a Catholic school. There are certain minimum re- quirements for parish membership called the precepts of the Church. The following are three of those precepts and how we look upon them in relation to parish membership.

ATTENDANCE AT WEEKLY MASS. The first precept of the Church requires the faithful to participate in the Eucharistic COLLECTION FOR FEB. 16, 2020 celebration when the Christian community gathers together on the day commemorating the Resurrection of the Lord (CCC #2042) and on holy days of obligation (CCC #2043). ADULT FAITH FORMATION Continuing religious education for adults striving to grow in their faith Prayer - Contrition

Many Catholics understand that as humans, we are sinners. Since the first temptation and fall in the Garden of Eden, mankind has possessed a heavy and hardened heart incapable of the pure love which God intended. However, it is through God’s grace and mercy that we may repent of our sinful ways and repair the relationship with Him that our sin has severed. Once we ex- perience this compunction cordis (repentance of heart), and recognize our need for conversion, we can approach God with a humble heart and express our prayers of contrition.

Prayers of contrition enable us to apologize for our sins and ask our Lord for forgiveness. Perhaps the first prayer of contrition that comes to mind is the Act of Contrition said during the Sacrament of Penance. While there are many variations of this prayer, each form essentially expresses “sorrow of the soul and detestation for the sin committed, together with the resolution not to sin again” (Council of Trent 1551). In addition to this private act of contrition, we also come together as the body of Christ every Sunday during mass and ask God for his forgiveness during the Penitential Rite. The asks us a community to call to mind our sins and then together we recite the following words “I confess to almighty God, and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned; in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and what I have failed to do. Through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault, I ask blessed Mary, ever , all the angels and , and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.”

The Church offers us the Sacrament of Penance to be absolved of all of our sins, but in order to express our true contriteness of heart, we must resolve to reorient our heart and our lives. While this commitment is challenging, God will always give us the strength to begin anew! He has sent His Holy Spirit to be ever present and bestow upon us the grace we need for our interior conversion. It is then that we may also reconcile ourselves to God and our neighbor through three main forms of penance: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. These forms are the utmost focus during specific liturgical seasons such as Lent in which we, as a Church family and the unitive body of Christ, “prepare for the great Easter mysteries by committing ourselves to fulfill our baptismal call to maturity, holiness, service, and community” (USCCB).

Next week: Lent SAINTS IN TRAINING Formation for young children learning the Faith to become saints Contrition Tell God You are Sorry: Color and fill in this picture of the Prodigal Son, and write your own Act of Contrition PRAYER is our relationship with God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and the Saints. It is how we talk, listen to, and spend time with those in Heaven. And God LOVES when we pray—He LOVES when we spend time with Him! Prayers of Contrition allow us to tell God we are sorry. We all make mistakes, and God still loves us anyway. He wants to for- give us, but we must first realize we made a mistake, and then tell him we are truly sorry and that we hope to not make that same mistake again. We can tell God we are sorry each day in our own silent prayers. And we have two opportunities for Contrition in church:  The first is the Penitential Rite during the Mass. We call to mind our sins, and ask God for forgiveness. This prepares our heart and soul to receive Jesus in the Eucharist.  The second is the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We can al- ways tell God we are sorry, and He will always forgive us. But in Confession, our souls are absolved, or washed clean—our sin is erased and we are reconciled fully to God. During the sacrament, we say an Act of Contrition prayer— we are sorry and promise to try to not sin again. Luke 15 tells us the Parable of the Prodigal Son, when a son returned to his father, having lost everything. His loving father welcomes him home! “For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.” SAINTS OF THE WEEK Sunday, February 23: St. Serenus the Gardener—Hermit and Martyr St. Serenus was born in Greece sometime during the second century. He moved to Sirmium in modern- day Hungary where he lived as a hermit spending time in prayer and tending his garden. One day, a woman and her daughters walked through the garden, and he asked them to leave. Insulted by this, the woman informed her husband, who was a Roman imperial guard, which resulted in Serenus being ar- rested. Serenus appeared before a magistrate who found him innocent of the crime alleged, but he sus- pected him of being a Christian due to his peaceful demeanor. Serenus was asked to sacrifice to the pagan gods, but he refused. As a result of this refusal, he was put to death by being beheaded. Monday, February 24: St. Adela—Widow St. Adela was born in 1067 as the youngest daughter of William the Conqueror, the king of England. In the year 1080, she married Stephen III, with whom she had eleven children. Adela utilized her great wealth for good by giving away countless sums to Catholic churches and monasteries. In 1095, when her husband took on a leadership role in the First Crusades, Adela managed government affairs at home. Following the death of her husband, she entered the convent, and lived the rest of her life as a nun following the rule of St. Benedict.

Tuesday, February 25: St. Luigi Versiglia—Bishop and Martyr St. Luigi was born in Oliva Gessi, Italy on June 5, 1873. When he was twelve years old, he joined Don Bosco's Oratory. In 1895, he was ordained a Salesian priest and then spent the next decade of his life as novice master at Genzano di Roma. Luigi led a Salesian mission to in 1906. He was appointed vicar apostolic of Shiuchow and titular Bishop of Carystus on April 22, 1920. During his reign, he founded a seminary, formation houses, an orphanage, and homes for the aged. On February 25, 1930, while traveling at sea, his ship was boarded by pirates who attempted to capture the women on the ship. Luigi and St. Callistus Caravario stepped forward to protect the women. The men were struck and tied up. They began to pray and were shot to death by the pirates.

Wednesday, February 26: St. Isabel of France—Virgin St. Isabel was born in March 1225 in Paris, France, the daughter of King Louis VIII and the younger sister of St. Louis IX. Despite being a wealthy princess, Isabel desired to devote her life to God. She made a vow of virginity and refused several offers for marriage, including a request from the Holy Father that she marry the King of Jerusalem. She devoted her time to prayer and service to the poor, whom she invited to dine with her and to whom she personally served dinner. Following the death of her mother, Isabel founded the Franciscan Monas- tery of the Humility of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Paris. She spent the remainder of her life in the monastery, though she never became a religious herself. Thursday, February 27: St. of Our Lady of Sorrows—Monk St. Gabriel was born on March 1, 1838 in Assisi, Italy. His early years were worldly and spent chasing after women. After twice being cured of serious illness, he felt that God might be calling him to a reli- gious vocation. On September 22, 1857, he joined the Passionist order in Morovalle, Italy. His time as a monk was spent in prayer, sacrifice, and developing a strong devotion to Our Lady. Approximately four years after making his profession, he fell ill with tuberculosis and passed away at age 24. Many mira- cles were attributed to his intercession following his death, including the curing of St. Gemma Galgani.

Friday, February 28: St. Romanus of Condat—Abbot and Hermit St. Romanus was born in Bugey, France around the year 390. When he was 35 years old, he decided to devote his life to God and live as a hermit in the Jura mountains of France. He was soon joined by his brother, St. Lupicinus, and the two attracted many followers. Romanus and Lupicinus estab- lished monasteries at Condat and Leuconne, and they also built a convent at La Beaume which was placed under the care of their sister. Romanus was ordained a priest by St. Hilary of Arles in 444. According to tradition, Romanus cured two lepers of their leprosy by embracing them. Saturday, February 29: St. Oswald—Bishop St. Oswald was born sometime during the tenth century in England to a noble family. He was the nephew of the Archbishop of Canterbury, St. Odo, from whom he received his education. Oswald went on to study in France where he entered the religious life by becoming a Benedictine monk. He was appointed Bishop of Worcester, and later Archbishop of York. In York, he founded several monasteries and introduced reforms. He was know for his holiness and compassion for the poor. On February 29, 992, he washed and kissed the feet of twelve men, as was his tradition each day during Lent. After he kissed the feet of the twelfth man, he passed away. St. Oswald is one of the few saints to have a feast on Leap Day!
