Kabbalah and the Subversion of Traditional Jewish Society in Early Modern Europe David B. Ruderman Most discussions about notions of authority and dissent in early mod- em Europe usually imply those embedded in Christian traditions, whether Protestant or Catholic. To address these same issues from the perspective of Jewish culture in early modem Europe is to consider the subject from a relatively different vantage point. The small Jewish com- munities of the fifteenth through seventeenth centuries were shaped in manifold ways by the norms and values of the Christian and Moslem host civilizations to which they belonged. Yet, they were also heirs to powerful rabbinic religious and political traditions that structured their social relationships and shaped their attitudes towards divine law, human responsibility, communal discipline, and authority. To examine their uni- verse of discourse in its proper context is to view it both in its own cul- tural terms and in its dialogue and negotiation with the non-Jewish world. No period in Jewish cultural history has undergone more radical refor- mulation and revision by recent scholarship than the early modem; though to what extent conventional schemes of periodization like "early modern," "Renaissance," or "baroque" can be meaningfully applied to the Jewish cultural experience is a question which still engenders much discussion and debate.' Equally problematic is a proper evaluation of the kabbalah, the traditions of Jewish mystical and esoteric experience, 1. Jethro's Advice in Medieval and Early Modern Jewish
JETHRO'SADVICE INMEDIEVAL AND EARLY MODERN JEWISHAND CHRISTIAN POLITICAL THOUGHT Avraham Melamed Jethro's advice to Moses about how to organize the political system of the ancient Jewish state (Ex. 18:13-27; Deut. 1:12-17) was one of the three major biblical sources which were used in medieval and early modern political thought. (The other sources are Deut. 17 and I Samuel 8.) This ? text was mainly used in two related contexts the theory of government, in which the commentators generally followed Aristotle, and the ? relationship between the spiritual and temporal authorities between ? kingship and prophecy in which a strong Platonic-Alfarabian influence is apparent. This study takes into account the changing historical realities and intellectual trends of the medieval and early modern periods. It opens with Abraham Ibn Ezra's pro-monarchic attack on feudalism in the twelfth century, continues with the discussion of the interpretations to Jethro's advice by Aquinas, Abravanel, Dei Pomis, Alemanno, Calvin, Bodin and others, and culminates with James Harrington's republicanism in the mid seventeenth century. I The exegete and the historian always interpret past events through their own eyes. They interpret these events from the view point of current historical problems and philosophies. This is true to day; itwas all the more so in the Middle Ages, when thinkers never hesitated to give past events meanings directly relevant to their own un period. This was sometimes done in a way thatmight seem totally a more critical to the modern mind. Only with the Renaissance did critical, "scientific" approach to both textual criticism and historical events gradually begin to emerge. -

CHAPTER SIX UNITY AND DIVERSITY IN GILGUL: YOHANAN ALEMANNO The reality of all the parts of reality is drawn from their (i.e., the parts’) connection and their unity. For the essence of a thing is its unity and connection, not its separation.1 Yohanan Alemanno occupies a central position in the history of Renaissance developments of notions of harmony and accord as conflated in the subjects of man and his soul. This sense of overall unity and connection is reflected in his life’s activities as well as in his writings. Indeed, Alemanno was active in both Christian and Jewish circles in Mantova, Padova and Florence, bringing together these rival sister religions in a veritably unprecedented point of communication from which he both exerted influence and adapted general Renaissance trends to his own patterns of thought. As one of the Jewish teachers of Giovanni Pico della Mirandola,2 Alemanno helped to shape the “Prince of Concordia’s” philosophy of concordance through his own syncretic tendencies to combine various forms of diverse thought, such as philosophical rationalism, Jewish mysticism, and Hermetic magic. Conversely, his tendency to emphasize ideas such as the unity of truth and the centrality of man in that cosmic picture of unity may reflect the influence of trends from the Florentine Academy and from the general Renaissance milieu upon his own modes of thought. Whatever the case may be, Alemanno held to a unique theory of unity that uni- fied within itself diverse sources and ideas and that culminated in the nodal point of man as the dynamic and fluid intermediary. -

Ozment Adam G Beaver A Holy Land for the Catholic Monarchy: Palestine in the Making of Modern Spain, 1469–1598 ABSTRACT Scholars have often commented on the ‘biblicization’ of the Spanish Monarchy under Philip II (r. 1556–1598). In contrast to the predominantly neo-Roman image projected by his father, Charles I/V (r. 1516/9–1556), Philip presented himself as an Old Testament monarch in the image of David or Solomon, complementing this image with a program of patronage, collecting, and scholarship meant to remake his kingdom into a literal ‘New Jerusalem.’ This dissertation explores how, encouraged by the scholarly ‘discovery’ of typological similarities and hidden connections between Spain and the Holy Land, sixteenth-century Spaniards stumbled upon both the form and content of a discourse of national identity previously lacking in Spanish history. The dissertation is divided into four chapters. In the first chapter, I examine three factors—the rise of humanist exegesis, a revitalized tradition of learned travel, and the close relationship between the crown and the Franciscan Order—that contributed to the development of a more historicized picture of the Holy Land in sixteenth-century Spanish sources. In Chapter Two, I focus on the humanist historian Ambrosio de Morales’ efforts to defend the authenticity of Near Eastern relics in Spanish collections. -

Rabbi Eliezer and Rabbi Joshua were discussing a problem in Jewish law, a halakhic problem. After delivering many arguments in favour of his own legal interpretation, Rabbi Eliezer invoked the authority of Heaven. To this Rabbi Joshua exclaimed ‘It is not in Heaven!’. According to Rabbi Joshua there was no need to pay heed to a heavenly voice, since the Jewish written law, the Torah, had been given at Mount Sinai. And since it was God himself who had written the Torah, ‘after the majority must one incline’. And how did God react to Rabbi Joshua‘s argument, according to the Rabbinic tradition? He laughed and said: ‘My sons have defeated Me, My sons have defeated Me’. Autonomy is at the basis of the process of interpretating a text. In this process, dialo- gue and questions are essential, as explained in the parable about the four children from the Passover Haggadah: the wise son, the wicked son, the simple one, and the one who does not know how to ask questions. -
