Draft: Golden Threads Copyright © Rossen, 2011 Tuesday, March 5, 2013 Golden Threads Preamble My Family in Greece John Augustus Toole Who can tell which Angel of Good Fortune must have smiled upon the young loyalist Irishman, John Augustus Toole, when he joined the British Navy as a midshipman and sailed out to the Mediterranean sometime in the first decade of the 19th Century? He was landed on the enchanted island of Zante where he met the great love of his life, the Contessina Barbara Querini. In this book I will tell the story of their love, the disapproval of Barbara’s family and how it came about that the young British officer prevailed. It was his good fortune and hers that resulted in my family on the Ionian Islands in Greece. My life, four generations later, was succoured in the cradle of luxury and privilege that he, his children and grandchildren had created. Before I tell you the story of my remarkable life on these islands, a story resonant with living memory and fondness for the people who touched my life, I will describe in this preamble the times, places and people who came before me: the tales told to me as a child. Most of Greece was part of the Ottoman Empire at the time of John Augustus Toole’s arrival. The seven Ionian Islands, located on the west coast of Greece, had escaped Ottoman occupation as part of the Venetian Empire. In 1796 Venice fell to the French under Napoléon Bonaparte. In 1809, British forces liberated the island of Zante and soon after Cephalonia, Kythria and Lefkada. -

January 2019 Thessaloniki – Greece Abstract It is unquestionable that heritage buildings are containers of culture and identity of a region or city. Heritage buildings include also industrial buildings and sites. They repre- sent an integral part of cultural heritage whose value, identification, protection and con- servation has become an important issue within the European countries. However, con- serving and restoring old industrial buildings, without adapting them, leads to dimin- ished historical value. If left without re-functioning, they become obsolete and deterio- rated. One suitable treatment method for conserving them is through the adaptive re- use method which is determined as the reuse of old, sometimes abandoned buildings, for new purposes without losing its former character. This action could have social, eco- nomic and environmental benefits for cities and their inhabitants. Arguably, field of industrial heritage has not been extensively researched especially in Greece. The current situation in Thessaloniki within the field of industrial heritage will be examined and analyzed, with special emphasis put on Allatini Mills, an abandoned industrial heritage complex. -

New history. We understand the new history generally in the same way as the representatives of Marxist history. It is a history of establishment of new social-economic formation – capitalism, which, in difference to the previous formations, uses the economic impelling and the big machine production. The most important classes are bourgeoisie and hired workers, in the last time the number of the employees in the sphere of service increases. The peasants decrease in number, the movement of peasants into towns takes place; the remaining peasants become the independent farmers, who are involved into the ware and money economy. In the political sphere it is an epoch of establishment of the republican system, which is profitable first of all for the bourgeoisie, with the time the political rights and liberties are extended for all the population. In the spiritual plan it is an epoch of the upper mental, or causal (later lower intuitive) plan, the humans discover the laws of development of the world and man, the traditional explanations of religion already do not suffice. The time of the swift development of technique (Satan was loosed out of his prison, according to Revelation 20.7), which causes finally the global ecological problems. -

14 JEWISH JUDICIAL AUTONOMY IN NINETEENTH CENTURY JERUSALEM: BACKGROUND, JURISDICTION, STRUCTURE by ELIMELECH WESTREICH∗ 1. Introduction This study focuses on Jewish judicial autonomy in Jerusalem at the end of the Ottoman period, mainly the Sephardic court that was the official rabbinical court recognized by law. I will introduce the Islamic background of Jewish autonomy, including its relations with the Sharia courts, the new geo-political environment in which the official Sephardic court operated and the institutional framework within which it was located, the scope of its jurisdiction and the structure of the court. The Sephardic rabbinical court was part of the official rabbinical institution, which was part of the Jewish community organization. At the head of the organization was the Chief Rabbi, whose Jewish title was Rishon Lezion (“The First in Zion”) and whose official Ottoman title was -akham Bashi. This organization had close ties to the political and cultural order of the Ottoman Empire and fulfilled an important duty in those days. However, the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire at the end of WWI also spelled the end of the Jewish institutional organization. Nevertheless, the Sephardic rabbinical court of the Ottoman era served as a source of inspiration for the development of the Jewish judicial system in the period of the British Mandate, both with respect to the extent of judicial authority and with respect to the close connection between the rabbinical court and the institution of the rabbinate. These components of the Sephardic rabbinical court remain present, in principle, in the State of Israel to this day. The Sephardic rabbinical court in Jerusalem was created and operated at a multidimensional historical junction. -

Origins, Settlement and Heyday, 1430–1595 Jews resided in Salonika many centuries before the Turkic tribes first made their appearance on the borders of Western civilization, at the Islamic world’s frontier. In fact, Salonika was one of the cities in whose synagogue the apostle Paul had preached Jesus’ teachings. Like many other Jewish communities is this part of the Roman (and later the Byzantine) Empire, this had been a Greek-speaking community leading its life in much the same way as the Greek pagans, and later, the Christian city dwellers around them. The Ottoman conquest of Salonika in 1430 did little to change their lifestyle. A major upheaval did take place, however, with the Ottoman takeover of Constantinople in 1453. The Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II, the Conqueror (Fatih in Turkish), aimed to turn the former Byzantine capital into the hub of his Empire, a world power in its own right on a par with such earlier grand empires as the Roman and the Persian. To that effect, he ordered the transfer of entire populations— Muslims, Greeks, and Jews—from other parts of his empire to the new capital in order to rebuild and repopulate it. -

La formación de un régimen autoritario en Italia en 1922 (desde 1925 dictadura totalitaria), causó un enfrentamiento con la masonería. Inicialmente varias logias apoyaron la llegada al poder de Mussolini, y entre los fascistas había muchos masones. Sin embargo, existía una fuerte corriente antimasónica heredada del nacionalismo, que compartía personalmente el Jefe de los «camisas negras» y varios líderes importantes del nuevo régimen. La masonería fue primero prohibida en las filas del Partido y luego (1925) proscrita. Aquí me propongo indagar sobre los motivos que llevaron a este enfrentamiento y el significado de la oposición masonería-fascismo, frente al programa fascista de alianza con fuerzas liberales, acercamiento a la Iglesia católica y formación de una nueva «religión política» incompatible con la tradición masónica. -

Email: [email protected] Abstract When the State of Greater Lebanon was established in 1920, the Jewish Community Council of Beirut was officially recognized as the central administrative body within Lebanon, and although smaller communities such as Sidon and Tripoli also had their own councils they were consequently made subject to the authority of Beirut. In this context of political overhaul, I argue that some Jewish actors made use “from below” of political opportunities provided by sectarianism “from above”—or national sectarianism—to garner control over all Jewish political structures in Lebanon. But by examining in particular activities in and around the Israelite Community Council in Sidon (al-Majlis al-Milli al-Isra’ili bi-Sayda), I show how and why these attempts to practice new forms of sectarianism were met with resistance, despite connections that tied Lebanon’s Jews together administratively in one community. Keywords: Beirut; Jews; Lebanon; sectarianism; Sidon; space Sectarianism as both a practice and a discourse is a recurring discussion among scholars of the modern Middle East. To start with, it is necessary to clarify what we mean by sectarian or sectarianism, as mis- understandings may eventually freeze the scholarly debate. In the Lebanese context, the word al-tā’ifiyya, as Fanar Haddad argues, is generally used to refer to, and more often than not to condemn, the confes- sional political system characteristic of modern Lebanon. -

In light of the little known fact that approximately 50% of Israelis are Jews from Arab lands or their descendents, this Article will use Jews from Iraq as a case study in examining the history and rights of Jews from Arab countries, who were expelled or forced to seek refuge elsewhere. Part I of this Article examines the historical legal status of Jews in Iraq and the discriminatory and prosecutorial events that triggered the expulsion of Jews from Iraq. Part II demonstrates that actions taken by Iraq against Jews violated international law stan- dards and other laws applicable now and at that time. Part III addresses the question of whether Jews from Arab lands currently have any available remedies for these violations of their rights. Finally, the Article concludes that a full accounting of the rights of Jews from Arab lands must accompany any discussions aimed at providing a regional peace agreement for the Middle East, if such an agreement is to have strength and legitimacy under international law. -
