COSTA RICAN COMPOSER CARLOS ESCALANTE MACAYA AND HIS CONCERTO FOR CLARINET AND STRINGS A Monograph Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In partial fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS by Ana Catalina Ramírez Castrillo May, 2014 Examining Committee Members: Dr. Cynthia Folio, Advisory Chair, Music Studies Department (Music Theory) Dr. Charles Abramovic, Piano Department, Keyboard Department (Piano) Dr. Emily Threinen, Instrumental Studies Department (Winds and Brass) Dr. Stephen Willier, Music Studies Department (Music History) ABSTRACT The purpose of this monograph is to promote Costa Rican academic music by focusing on Costa Rican composer Carlos Escalante Macaya and his Concerto for Clarinet and Strings (2012). I hope to contribute to the international view of Latin American composition and to promote Costa Rican artistic and cultural productions abroad with a study of the Concerto for Clarinet and Strings (Escalante’s first venture into the concerto genre), examining in close detail its melodic, rhythmic and harmonic treatment as well as influences from different genres and styles. The monograph will also include a historical context of Costa Rican musical history, a brief discussion of previous important Costa Rican composers for the clarinet, a short analysis of the composer’s own previous work for the instrument (Ricercare for Solo Clarinet) and performance notes. Also, in addition to the publication and audio/video recording of the clarinet concerto, this document will serve as a resource for clarinet soloists around the world. Carlos Escalante Macaya (b. 1968) is widely recognized in Costa Rica as a successful composer. His works are currently performed year-round in diverse performance venues in the country. -

SOCIETÀ FILARMONICA Trento Programma generale Stagione 2017 concerti arà il pianoforte il mattatore della nuova stagione musicale promossa dalla Società Filarmonica di Trento per il 2017: l’acquisto Sdi un nuovo e pregevole Steinway ha suggerito, infatti, un calendario d’appuntamenti centrato sul romantico principe degli strumenti, beniamino del pubblico, autentico pass-par tout nel repertorio massimamente fre- quentato dalle società concertistiche, forte di un mercato interpretativo di numeri esorbitanti dall’ovest all’est dell’intero globo terrestre. Un palmares da cui espungere solisti di calibro come il francese Bertrand Chamayou (23 gennaio) assai poco conosciuto in Italia, oppure Sophie Pacini (17 febbraio), artista italo-tedesca apprezzata soprattutto nell’Europa nordica, nonché una autentica “stella” come il coreano Se- ong-Jin Cho (15 marzo), brillante vincitore del primo premio al Concorso Chopin di Varsavia nel 2015, che a Trento saprà confermare il prestigioso riconoscimento con un programma impaginato attorno alle celeberrime Quattro ballate del compositore polacco. Meno consueta ma destinata alla ribalta dei concerti-spettacolo, la collaborazione del pianoforte (Davide Cabassi) ai fiati vedrà il ritorno (5 ottobre) del quintetto Gomalan Brass in un programma strepitoso con i Quadri da un’esposizione di Mussorgsky e la Rhapsody in Blue di Gershwin. -

Sharon Kam is one of the world’s leading clarinet soloists and has been working with renowned orchestras in the United States, Europe, and Japan for over 20 years. Mozart’s clarinet masterpieces have been an object of artistic focus for Ms. Kam since the beginning of her career. At the age of 16, she performed the Mozart Clarinet Concerto in her orchestral debut with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra and Zubin Mehta. A short time later, she performed the Clarinet Quintet with the Guarneri String Quartet in Carnegie Hall, New York. As part of Mozart’s 250th birthday celebrations at the National Theatre in Prague, her interpretation of the Mozart concerto was televised live in 33 countries and is available on DVD. In the same year, she was able to realize her longtime dream of recording the Concerto and the Clarinet Quintet using the basset clarinet. Contributing to the widely praised disk were eminent string players Isabelle van Keulen, Ulrike-Anima Mathé, Volker Jacobsen and Gustav Rivinus, as well as the Haydn Philharmonie. As a passionate chamber musician, Sharon Kam regularly works with artists such as Lars Vogt, Christian Tetzlaff, Enrico Pace, Daniel Müller-Schott, Martin Helmchen and the Jerusalem Quartet. She is a frequent guest at festivals in Schleswig-Holstein, Heimbach, Rheingau, Risør, Cork, Verbier, and Delft, as well as the Schubertiade festival. Composer When Thorsten Encke won the Concours de Composition du Festival Pablo Casals de Prades in April 2005 with his composition of a string quartet, it wasn’t only the emotional clarity and fine craftsmanship which directly earned him the award, but in particular his deep roots in the music. “Encke, with his prize-winning string quartet, has succeeded in creating an impressive work … the unity and coherence in the composition reveal great maturity.” So said the critics at the conclusion of the competition, going on to attest to the composer’s “compositional vigour and the adamant will for expression”. Born 1966 in Göttingen, Thorsten Encke studied violoncello and conducting in Hannover and in Los Angeles, gathered experience in all fields of classical music and performed widely as a soloist, chamber and orchestral musician. In 1999 he decided to devote himself to a future as a freelance musician. After winning the competition in Prades in 2005, Thorsten Encke shifted his musical focus to the composition and conducting of his own works. Since then he has received numerous commissions, for example from the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and the music festivals in Hitzacker and Heimbach. His works are performed by artists such as Paavo Järvi, Christian Tetzlaff, Sharon Kam, Julian Steckel, the Quartetto di Cremona, the Stockholm Chamber Brass and many other internationally active musicians. Recordings by Radio France musique, Deutschlandfunk, Deutschlandradio Kultur, the North German Radio and Radio Bremen give an impression of the wide spreading of his music.
