There was a section of the media which covered Athe ruling party through and through, another section covered major opposition on and off. The smaller parties were somehow covered during the initial stages of the electoral campaigns but as the days got close to the polling day they were relegated to obscurity. The initial impression was that the media would strive to provide equitable coverage but it appeared that those parties with political muscle were having the lion’s share. Headlines of mainstream media and main items of Editorial Board broadcast media were full of pledges mainly of the ruling Kajubi Mukajanga party with the other parties mainly covered on social media MCT and were only given prominence in mainstream media in the EXECUTIVE SECRETARY event of intra-party bickering. Given the operational conditions where some media outlets were suspended on claims of flouting regulations David Mbulumi especially related to election coverage, the extra zeal to be PROGRAMME MANAGER careful coupled with a degree of fear resulted in self-censorship. Hamis Mzee It is unfortunate that the media had to operate in this EDITOR situation which was not a leveled playing field. It may be easy and tempting to say that the media has failed the public but considering the conditions the fourth estate has been subjected to, that might not be a justifiable assertion. In an ideal situation, election time is a “field day” for the media in terms of business with increased circulation and advertisement but that was not the case this time around. For instance, for newspapers one would imagine during this time they would have bumper copies but alas, they are lean. Newspapers which normally would have 28 pages or more, publish 20 pages or less and this was during election time! Something has gone awry and must be changed for better election coverage and for the sake of democracy, transparency and accountability. The article starts by the order to privately owned Clouds TV and Clouds FM on August 27, the second day of mainland Tanzania's official campaign period leading up to October 28 elections, to replace their regular programming with an hour- long apology until midnight and then halt programming altogether for a week. The over-the-top display of repentance was dictated by TCRA, on the grounds that both broadcasters had broken the law by airing parliamentary candidate nomination results without verifying the information with Tanzania's electoral commission.
