Wine & Cheese January 2020 Beer Club Wine & Cheese January 2020 Beer Club From blustery conditions on Halloween night to unseasonably warm temperatures Christmas week, we can’t wait to see what January’s weather will hold. Needless to say, we anticipate much colder temps and with that we have two extraordinary “winter beers” for you to enjoy. The first selection is Winter Solstice Seasonal Ale from Anderson Valley Brewing Co in Boonville, California. What makes this place incredibly unique is that the original 10 barrel brewery was founded in 1987. At the time, they were one of only 20 craft breweries in the entire country and have long been considered one of the pioneers of the craft beer industry. By 1996, their 26-acre property housed a 100-barrel brewhouse, tasting room, beer garden, and is now home to the first 18-hole disc golf course. Their large solar panel array provides over 40% of their electrical needs, while 100% of the waste water is treated and used for the irrigation of their goat pastures and estate hop fields. In addition, the spent grain is given to local cows and spent hops are used as a natural fertilizer. In 2011, they established an exclusive partnership with Wild Turkey Bourbon, which brought about their Barrel Series of bourbon barrel-aged beers which have opened up unique opportunities in beer making. The second selection is Generator Doppelbock from Metropolitan Brewing in Chicago, Illinois. This type of beer is not only rich in flavor but rich in history as well. This is a sub-category of the bock style~ Doppelbocks are extra strong, rich, and weighty lagers characterized by an intense malty sweetness with a note of hop bitterness to balance the sweetness. Color can vary from full amber to dark brown and alcohol levels are potently high, typically 7-8 percent ABV. Doppelbocks were first brewed by the Paulaner monks in Munich. At the time, it was intended to be consumed as “liquid bread” during Lent. Enjoy your winter brews! J Anderson Valley Brewing Co, Winter Solstice Seasonal Ale Type: Winter Warmer Ale Availability: Seasonal Alcohol: 6.9% abv Tasting Notes: Rich mouthfeel, creamy finish, hints of toffee, spice, and caramel Food Pairings: Pair with our Cookie for Two Cheese Club Pairing: For this month’s cheese club, pair with Rosemary Manchego Metropolitan Brewing Generator Doppelbock Type: Doppelbock Availability: Seasonal Alcohol: 8.0%.abv. Saturday – March 2, 2019 1:00-5:00pm & 6:00-10:00pm Bottom Lounge 1375 W Lake Street – Chicago Vote for the Champion Beers of Chicagoland! Check out CBS swag and cast your ballot … Winners announced at 9:00 PM 2 Please respect your fellow attendees and sample responsibly. Be aware of the beer’s alcohol content by volume (abv). Inebriation will not be tolerated – you will be cut off and asked to leave. Real ale, living ale, and cask ale all refer to beer that has been naturally carbonated by yeast still in the cask (or bottle) without any added C02. The yeast that fermented your beer have been working at what they do best until days - or perhaps even less - prior to tasting your beer today. Beer that has not quite finished fermenting is added to a cask where the yeast completes its mission and produces a gentle stream of natural carbonation. Finings, which attract yeast like a beer geek to a barleywine, are also added to the cask, and draw the yeast to the bottom when their job is finally complete. For this reason, casks sit in stillage for up to a week prior to serving, so as not to upset the contents. When you see a cellarman artfully tilt a cask during the event, this is to ensure these remnants remain on the bottom. All this magic works best at cellar temperature - about 52-54F. So, while you may be a bit chilly, rest assured that your beer is lounging in absolute comfort. Great real ale is bright with a gentle carbonation served at cellar temperature, but this is affected by the condition of the beer put into the cask, when the brewery filled the cask, and when the cask was delivered.

For Immediate Release March 15, 2019 USBTC Announces 25th Annual Winter Competition Winners Acton, MA - The United States Beer Tasting ChampionshipTM (USBTC) recently completed its 25th annual Winter Competition. A total of 376 beers from 123 breweries were examined across 17 different beer categories. Within each category, the USBTC determined both a Grand Champion and the best entry from each of 7 U.S. regions: 1) Northeast, 2) Mid-Atlantic 3) Southeast, 4) Midwest, 5) Rockies/Southwest, 6) California, and 7) Northwest/Pacific. The USBTC takes a unique approach in that its competition is held in multiple stages. Sequential field trials are conducted wherein judges evaluate beers and select the best to advance to subsequent rounds. This allows beers to be judged in relatively small flights while ensuring that the best beers are still determined through head-to-head competition. All beers were tasted in blinded fashion and judged on a hedonic scale. The USBTC recognizes that American brewers are continually establishing new beer styles and reviving interest in classic styles. As one way to acknowledge this, the USBTC devotes “pull-out” categories in each competition to styles that are currently emerging or being faithfully carried on. In our most recent event, Pumpkin Beer and Whiskey Aged Porter/Stout were selected as USBTC pull-out categories. For additional information please visit our web page at www.usbtc.com or search for us on Facebook. The USBTC Winter Grand Champions are: Category Grand Champion Company Location Total Beer Judged
