Be it a beer dinner, cook-off, concert or film festival, the ethos of these happenings has consistently mirrored the consideration and creativity behind the making of The Brewery’s beer. • Glacial Change on Baranof Island: Quantifying Local-Level Impact of Climate Change
Glacial Change on Baranof Island: Quantifying Local-level Impact of Climate Change Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins, Chandler Kemp, Eli Bildner Overview The glaciers of Baranof Island – the only glaciated island in Southeast Alaska – are small, disparate, and sensitive to climatic change due to the temperate climate in which they are situated. We propose to quantify the change in area of a selection of Baranof Island glaciers over recent history by gathering geospatial data, calculating the perimeter and surface area of the glaciers, using a model to estimate glacial volume, and then comparing our findings against the historical record – historical USGS field measurements, historical aerial photographs, tree core data, and geomorphological indicators such as terminal moraines and trim lines. We will then quantify historical change of surface area and perimeter, and if sufficient historical data points are available, we will also calculate a rate of change (both for surface area and extent of the terminus) and predict future glacial advance or retreat. Methodology Targeted Glaciers We will gather data for two subsets of glaciers, one subset from mid-Baranof Island, one subset from the South Baranof Wilderness Area. The first subset of glaciers will consist of two glaciers from mid-Baranof Island, both on or near the Cross-Baranof Island Trail and well known by users of the Sitka Community Use Area. These glaciers are indicated in map attachment 1 – a small valley glacier north of Glacier Lake and a modest icefield north of the Baranof River valley. The second subset of glaciers will consist of three smaller hanging and cirque glaciers from the South Baranof Wilderness Area (see map attachment 2).

This is the sixteenth since our re-launch in 1999 following a ten-year absence. We are delighted to be back at the Charotar Patidar Samaj for the fifteenth time. As always we are showcasing the brewing expertise of our Leicestershire and Rutland breweries on our LocAle bars, we also feature a selection of breweries within 25 miles as the crow flies from the festival site giving an amazing 40 breweries within the area to choose from. This year we have divided the servery up into six distinct bars and colour-coded them (see p 15 for details). We have numbered the beers to make it easier to remember what to order at the bar. Our festival is one of many that play a major role not just as fund raising, but also to keep people informed about CAMRA’s work and the vast range of beers that are now available to the consumer. This continuous background work nationwide has doubtless helped change attitudes towards real ale. Our theme this year is XV, a full explanation of which appears in the article on page 9.

3/30/2021 Beer History: 3 Nearly-Forgotten San Diego Beer Pioneers | Serious Eats Beer History: 3 Nearly-Forgotten San Diego Beer Pioneers LISA GRIMM While San Diego is known as a craft beer destination, being home to Stone, Ballast Point, AleSmith, and many more, there was a thriving brewing scene long before those breweries appeared. 19th- and early-20th century San Diego's breweries were a little smaller and rougher, but they were a key part of their city. And although San Francisco dominated early commercial brewing in California—major Bay Area breweries such as Fredericksburg and Philadelphia Brewery had outposts in San Diego—homegrown businesses made their own marks, not just on the industry, but on the city itself. Here is a brief look at three nearly-forgotten San Diego beer pioneers. San Diego Brewing Company Alonzo Horton , who developed much of what became modern San Diego, founded San Diego Brewing Company in the late 1890s. Soon, business was thriving—demand was such that a 5-ton ice-making machine was installed, as well as a stand-alone bottling house (pictured here ). By 1909, the company changed its name to the San Diego Consolidated Brewing Company, and was valued at more than $500,000. But despite brewing a popular, successful product, the political climate was not favorable to the company's continued good fortunes—by 1913, Arizona had passed its own anti-alcohol law, and the company led suit against the Atchinson, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad for refusing to carry their near-beer products to the now-dry state (previously a reliable consumer).
