Family Vault of the Dukes of Courland
FAMILY VAULT OF THE DUKES OF COURLAND The family vault of the Dukes of Courland is located on the basement-floor level of the south-east corner of Jelgava Palace, seemingly connecting Rastrelli’s building and the old Jelgava medieval castle. The first members of the Kettler family, the Duke Gotthard’s under aged sons, had died in Riga Castle, were buried in Kuldīga and only later brought to Jelgava. The Duke Wilhelm’s wife Sophie who died in 1610 also had been buried in Kuldīga castle church was completed; there was a cellar beneath it for the Dukes’ sarcophagi. The cellar premise was about 9 m wide, with a free passage in the middle and covered by a barrel vault. In 1587, the Duke Gotthard was the first to be buried there; 24 members of the Ket- tler family were buried until 1737. During the Northern War; in September 1705, the crypt was damaged for the first time when Swedish soldiers broke off several sarcophagi and stole jewellery. In 1737 when the castle was blown up, the church and crypt were destroyed as well. Sarcophagi were placed in the shed while the family vault premise was built on the basement floor of the new palace. The new crypt consisted of two rather small vaulted premises on the basement floor of the southern block, with a separate entrance from out- side that was walled up later. The Birons did not realize the idea of a separate family vault. In 1819, a call to the Courland society was announced to donate money for the reconstruction of the Dukes’ family vault. -

Minnette Grunmann-Gaudet From Epic to Romance: The Paralysis of the Hero in the Prise d'Orange N HIS Essai de poétique médiévale, Paul Zumthor attempts to establish a basic structural model for the Old French epic, (Schema I I).1 He bases his schema upon a typological classification of the principal characters of the chanson de geste proposed by Pasqualino in 1970. On the primary horizontal axis we find an opposition between good and bad characters, or in socio-religious terms, between Christians and pagans. This axis is broken by secondary diagonal axes which gauge whether individuals change, becoming good by repentance or conversion to Christianity, or bad by political treason or renouncements of the Christian faith. This model clearly illustrates the moral polarities inherent in works such as the Oxford Roland and the Chanson de Guillaume, but does not account for a great number of gestes in which the conflict is between lord and vassal, uncle and nephew, husband and wife, or even two friends. CAR ROUTE AROUND THE In the Slītere National Park, except for restricted areas, you may walk freely through it to look for plants, animals and landscapes, to pick mushrooms and berries, to go swimming (except at Kolkasrags, where it is dangerous), to get a SLītere suntan, to ride a bike or a boat. While doing it, let’s respect the nature values! THE ROUTE This route will allow you to learn about the diverse environmental and cultural heritage of northern Kurzeme peninsula. You will also find the loveliest views in the Slītere National Park. You can drive down the route, or you can ride a bicycle. Season: Preferably April-October, but year-round if conditions permit Type of car: No specific requirements Type of bike: Mountain bike Difficulty: For bikers, not very hard if you take two days Road cover: Mostly asphalt, but some 19 km of gravel road Distance from Rīga: 170 km Beginning: Dundaga or other places (Melnsils, Sīkrags) – this is a circular route End: Dundaga or other places Route: Dundaga-Šlītere-Sīkrags- Mazirbe-Košrags-Pitrags-Saunags- Vaide-Kolka-Melnsils-Vīdale- Dundaga Markings: None Alternatives: The route can be taken in either direction and can be started and stopped anywhere. Length: ~90 km. If you’re driving, we recommend that you take two days if you want to take a detailed look at everything that you want to see and if you hike all of the trails. Diverse peoples acquired economic and political hegemony, they imposed laws, customs and artistic models which merged with pre-existing backgrounds and styles which then expanded throughout Northern European and African countries. Ideas from the East, such as science, religion and artistic models, fil- tered throughout the Mediterranean. Nomadic populations reached Mediterranean shores and so cultures and customs were brought to- gether for several centuries in a relatively small circle. It was on the edges of the Mediterranean where the two fundamental ideas of gar- den design, the formal and the informal, were created and confronted each other. Here, the garden became the idealization of a perfect and immutable world, the mimesis of nature. -

A Tour of the Suiti Cultural Space and the Livonian Cultural Space Introduction Information about both cultural spaces Suiti The Suiti is a small Catholic community living in three parishes of Northern Kurzeme – the Western part of Latvia: Alsunga municipality, Gudenieki parish and Basi village as well as Jūrkalne parish. The total area of the Suiti region is 402 km2. The region is quite remotely located. It is a 2.2 hour- drive from Riga to Alsunga and the distance is 177 km. Gudenieki is situated 184 km from the capital city and Jūrkalne - 189 km. A unique cultural space and identity has developed in the region due to the strong influence of the Catholic church and to the historic interaction of Latvian, Liv, Polish and German cultures. The total population of the territory is around 2 800 people. The synthesis of pre-Christian traditions and religious rituals has created this unique intangible cultural heritage of the Suiti community. Numerous distinct features characterise the Suiti cultural space, such as vocal drone singing performed by Suiti women, wedding traditions, colourful traditional costumes, the Suiti language, local cuisine, religious traditions, celebrations of the annual cycle, and a remarkable number of folk songs, dances and melodies recorded in this community.
