Ahollowisnextmadeintheflourandenoughboilingwaterpoured intoittomakeastiffpaste.Usagedifferssomewhatinthisrespect, coldwaterbeingusedbysomeformixing.Thestirringpaddleisoften employedatfirst,afterwhichthepasteiskneadedwiththehands.

Saltwasevidentlyadoptedprincipallyduringthelaterhistorical period.In'HistoryoftheMissionoftheUnitedBrethrenAmongthe IndiansinNorthAmerica'(London,1794),translatedbyLaTrobe,G.
