Introducción. En 1999, la revista Modern Fiction Studies (John Hopkins UP) publicó un número especial dedicado a la obra del novelista norteamericano Don DeLillo (Nueva York, 1936). Como presentación de ese número, John N. Duvall escribió una introducción subtitulada “El momento de la canonización”.1 La mayoría de los críticos coinciden en considerar que la publicación de Underworld en 1997 supuso la consagración de DeLillo y su inclusión en el canon literario norteamericano como uno de los grandes autores del siglo XX. Martin Amis, en una reseña de Underworld de 1997, anunciaba, después de preguntarse acerca del salto generacional en la literatura norteamericana: “The condition that caused the great discontinuity in American letters has come to an end […] Underworld may or may not be a great novel, but there is no doubt that it renders DeLillo a great novelist” (Amis, 2002: 317). Don DeLillo ha escrito hasta la fecha trece novelas, cinco obras de teatro, un par de decenas de ensayos, un guión cinematográfico, panfletos en defensa de Salman Rushdie y Wei Jingsheng y trece relatos.2 Su nombre, sin embargo, ha alcanzado fama y reconocimiento académico únicamente en su faceta de novelista. DeLillo es hoy uno de los novelistas norteamericanos mejor considerados por la crítica de su país y con mayor proyección internacional.3 La popularidad de su obra, no obstante, no ha sido constante durante toda su carrera, sino que ha ido creciendo progresivamente a lo largo de los años, especialmente a partir de la publicación de Libra en 1988, de la que podría decirse que marca un punto de inflexión en términos del número de sus lectores y de la atención académica recibida. El corpus seleccionado para esta investigación lo conforma el conjunto de las novelas publicadas por Don DeLillo desde Americana (1971) hasta Cosmópolis (2003), 1 “From Valparaiso to Jerusalem: DeLillo and the Moment of Canonization” (Duvall, 1999: 559-568). 2 Estos textos nunca han sido recopilados y publicados en un volumen independiente. William Balthrop Carole Blair Lawrence Grossberg William Keith © 2013 David Supp-Montgomerie ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT David Supp-Montgomerie: Speaking from the Heart: Mediation and Sincerity in U.S. Political Speech (Under the direction of Christian Lundberg) This dissertation is a critique of the idea that the artifice of public speech is a problem to be solved. This idea is shown to entail the privilege attributed to purportedly direct or unmediated speech in U.S. public culture. I propose that we attend to the ēthos producing effects of rhetorical concealment by asserting that all public speech is constituted through rhetorical artifice. Wherever an alternative to rhetoric is offered, one finds a rhetoric of non-rhetoric at work. A primary strategy in such rhetoric is the performance of sincerity. In this dissertation, I analyze the function of sincerity in contexts of public deliberation. I seek to show how claims to sincerity are strategic, demonstrate how claims that a speaker employs artifice have been employed to imply a lack of sincerity, and disabuse communication, rhetoric, and deliberative theory of the notion that sincere expression occurs without technology. In Chapter Two I begin with the original problem of artifice for rhetoric in classical Athens in the writings of Plato and Isocrates.

Boas coined the term in 1896, All's Well That Ends Well, Troilus and Cressida, and Measure For Measure have been generally accepted as "problem plays," and many critics have offered biographical, thematic, and formal explanations of why these plays are so "dark." In this thesis, I accept that these plays are "problems" and I propose a rhetorical explanation for dissatisfaction with them, especially with their endings. Drawing on Kenneth Burke's philosophy of literary form and his anthropology of man as the symbol-using animal, I show that in these plays Shakespeare frustrates the expectations of an audience for a definite ending through death or marriage which would define the "terms" characterized in each play; secondly, he provides no scapegoat whose victimage would allow the audience to recognize an order clearly proposed for its acceptance; finally, he supplies no symbol of order which credibly demonstrates its power to establish a renewed society.
