Durante la estancia en esta ciudad (1996-1998), tuve la oportunidad de descubrir y conocer su patrimonio cultural y artís- tico a través de las visitas a los distintos museos e iglesias, sorprendiéndo- me la cantidad de obras de pintura española que conservan. De este modo, bajo la dirección de la Dra. María Isabel Álvaro Zamora, decidí elaborar dicho estudio, que presen té como memoria de licenciatura en la Universi- dad de Zaragoza en diciembre de 1998. En concreto, los fondos pictóri- cos comprenden obras datadas entre los siglos XV y XX, y la mayoría de ellos se conservan en museos y colecciones genovesas. En un principio, se procedió al inventario y catalogación de las obras de pintura española exis- tentes en Génova, pero con el tiempo se fueron descubriendo muchos más fondos pictóricos en el resto del territorio ligur, que fueron tambi én obje- to de estudio. Los objetivos que se persiguieron en la realización de la memoria de licenciatura fueron los siguientes: recuperar parte del patrimonio español que, por diferentes motivos, se encuentra fuera de España; realizar su cata- logación e inventario; determinar las vías de llegada de estas obras de pin- tura española a Liguria; y estudiarlas monográficamente para valorar su interés en el contexto general de la pintura española y en el concreto de sus posi bles influencias en la pintura italiana, particularmente en la pintu- ra ligur. Antes de pasar al estudio en cuestión, es preciso realizar una serie de anotaciones. De este modo, hay que señalar que para llevarlo a cabo se siguió la siguiente metodología de trabajo: 10 Preámbulo 1. Localización de las diferentes obras, dispersas en las colecciones y museos públicos, tanto expuestas como depositadas en sus almacenes, y en las colecciones privadas de Génova y de Liguria.1 En cuanto a los museos de Génova, cabe mencionar: Galleria di Palazzo Bianco, Galleria di Palaz- zo Reale, Galleria Nazionale di Palazzo Spinola, Palazzo Durazzo Pallavi- cini, Museo dell’Accademia Ligustica di Belle Arti, Galleria d’Arte Moderna y Museo Luxoro. Entre las colecciones privadas se encuentran la de L. Masini, Alessandro Pernecco, T. Pelizza, V. E. Rota, I. Mazzola, Vitaliano Rocchiero y algunas otras más cuyos propietarios desean man- tenerse en el anonimato. En el contexto genovés, se debe incluir la pintu- ra española conservada en la iglesia de San Giorgio. En cuanto al resto de Liguria, se revisaron las otras tres provincias que, junto con Génova, constituyen esta región, incluyendo así en este trabajo: Museo Civico Amedeo Lia de La Spezia, Pinacoteca Civica de Imperia, la iglesia de Santo Stefano de Chiusanico (Imperia) y el oratorio dei Rossi de Gavi Ligure, y las colecciones privadas de G. Robaldo y D. Tiscione de Albi- sola (Savona), de Roberto Debenedetti y Silvia Bottaro, y diferentes colecciones privadas de Savona. Las dificultades que se encontraron en la realización del trabajo fue- ron grandes, tanto para obtener los correspondientes permisos de entra- da a los museos, algunos cerrados en ese momento al público (Galleria d’Arte Moderna de Génova), como para localizar los archivos familiares, que se presentan de modo fragmentario en el caso de las obras del siglo XVII, y a los coleccionistas privados, en especial de la obra de Serafín Avendaño y de la pintura contemporánea, muy remisos en general a dejar estudiar dichas obras debido a las leyes sobre patrimonio vigentes en Ita- lia (Ley de la Privacidad n.º 675/96). Respecto a las obras que se encuen- tran fuera de Génova (La Spezia, Imperia y Savona), se visitaron cada una de estas ciudades para estudiar las telas, que, en ciertos casos, tales como el de la iglesia de Santo Stefano de Chiusanico (Imperia), solo se pueden ver determinados días de la semana. 2. The influence of Japanese art is a phenomenon that is now called Japonisme , and it spread widely throughout Western art. It is quite hard to make a clear definition of Japonisme because of the breadth of the phenomenon, but it could be generally agreed that it is an attempt to understand and adapt the essential qualities of Japanese art. This thesis explores Japanese influences on British Art and will focus on four artists working in Britain: the American James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), the Australian Mortimer Menpes (1855-1938), and two artists from the group known as the Glasgow Boys, George Henry (1858-1934) and Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864-1933).

There, not only the actual things visible but different perspectives and entirely new concepts were presented through a variety of implements and combinations of them. On such occasions, vases, incense burners, and tea caddies were employed as “tools” to express such ideas. The significance of the existence of such works of art as tools to give form to such ideas was great. In addition, having accomplished the Meiji Restoration in the latter half of the nineteenth century, Japan became open to Western politics, economics, and culture and aimed to form a new nation-state. In doing so, thanks to Japonism, Japanese-made products were highly appreciated abroad. However, in the 1880s, Japonism diminished and export declined. As a result, the producing centers lose confidence. This trend became definite with the emergence of Art Nouveau at the Paris Exposition of 1900. On that occasion, nearly 200 people visited Paris from Japan and recognized the actual state. While, on the one hand, this answer was a scheme to secure the market by means of a price war relying on low wages, on the other hand, there were people who attempted to launch Japanese artistry out into a new art, i.e.

This genre is known as sensô sakusen kirokuga (war campaign documentary painting). Japan’s army and navy commissioned noted Japanese painters to record war campaigns on a monumental scale. Military officials favored yôga (Western-style painting) for its strength in depicting scenes in realistic detail over nihonga (Japanese-style painting). The military gave unprecedented commissions to yôga painters despite the fact that Japan was fighting the “materialist” West. Large military exhibitions exposed these paintings to civilians. Officials attached national importance to war documentary paintings by publicizing that the emperor had inspected them in the Imperial Palace. This study attempts to analyze postwar Japanese reluctance to tackle war documentary painting by examining its controversial and unsettling nature.

Scott t Abstract: Japan's Law for the Protection of Cultural Properties has been heralded as one of the most sophisticated and complete statutes of its kind and has been viewed as a model for other countries considering means to protect their ethnographic and cultural treasures. This Article examines the social, cultural, political, and legal influences antecedent to the promulgation of the statute and discusses the complexities inherent in composing legislation of this sort. The specific Japanese legislative and administrative efforts undertaken to protect national treasures prior to promulgation of the statute, and the political environment contemporaneous with its passage, are compiled, analyzed, and provided to the western audience.

    In Pursuit of Universalism by Alicia Volk ONE REVERSE JAPONISME AND THE STRUCTURE OF MODERN ART IN JAPAN It was Oscar Wilde who first observed, as early as 1891, that Japan, for the West, was a mere invention, a purely aesthetic fancy.1 Yet the Orientalization of Japan has also been enacted within. Modern art history lies at the center of this process. As Karatani Kōjin has argued, “ ‘Japan’ as an aestheticized object was predominantly formed in visual art, in particular by its own discursive practices.”2 The post-Enlightenment West consti- tuted itself in opposition to its “primitive” Other, as manifested in, for example, Afri- can sculpture and Asian painting. But the internalization of this same dialectic in Ja- pan, coupled with a successful program of modernization based on the European model, resulted in a complex and unstable condition whereby the native Self, conceived in opposition to its Western Other, became at the same time Other to itself. By the time the country defeated Russia in war in the first decade of the twentieth century, the Japanese people had experienced a nearly half-century-long process of defining them- selves against the foreign and the native. Japan found its own idealized “primitive” (gen- shi), antithetical to the modern present—an appropriation of Western Orientalist discourse—in the native (East Asian) past.3 Modern art and modernism as they devel- oped in Japan were shaped by these distinct problematics of Japanese modernity. In this context it becomes possible to conceive the dialectic of Japan’s modern iden- tity formation as a kind of reverse Japonisme, and of Japanese modern art’s structure and systems as having been fashioned by that dynamic.
