DOI: https://doi.org/10.16995/ee.1899 The Testimony of the Hoofprints Danish Legends about the Medieval Union Queen Margrethe John Lindow, University of California, Berkeley, United States, [email protected] Barbro Klein’s “The Testimony of the Button” is still, fifty years after it appeared, a fundamental study of legends and legend scholarship. Inspired by Klein’s article, I analyze legends about “lord and lady” Margrethe (1353–1412), who reigned for decades as the effective ruler of the medieval union of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Proceeding through various groups of related legends, I show how these legends were adapted to Margrethe’s anomalous status as a female war leader, including their cross-fertilization with robber legends and the use of a ruse usually associated with male protagonists. This article ends by indicating the importance of place within history as articulated in legends. VISIONEN FOR DANMARK: EN POLITISK LANDSKABSKUNST RESUMÉ Årstallene 1814 og 1864 har altid markeret sig som smertelige ar i 1800-tallets historie: Tabet af Norge på den ene side og afståelsen af Slesvig og Holsten på den anden side. Disse skelsættende amputeringer reducerede det danske riges status og jordbesiddelser fra dobbeltmonarki af betragtelig størrelse til en lilleputstat med en grænse, der gik syd for Kolding. Det yndige land, som Adam Oehlenschläger (1779-1850) beskrev i national- sangen, blev stækket i størrelse og kraft efter 1814, og ud af denne stemning, der indfandt sig mellem årene 1814 og 1864, mobiliserede en landskabskunst sig med nye skildringer af det danske land. I billeder søgte kunstnerne at definere den særligt danske natur, som den kunne opleves i skovene, ved kysterne og arkitektoniske seværdigheder. Disse billeder, der blev til i den tidsånd, hvor samfundets magthavere og kulturelle elite havde behov for at definere en ny og forstærket national identitet, var imidlertid ofte politisk motiveret. Det viste sig nemlig, at ikke kun var kunstnerne venner med tidens førende politikere; politikerne bestilte også kunstværker hos dem og prægede herigennem deres motivvalg. “Visionen for Danmark: en politisk landskabskunst” er fortællingen om tiden omkring 1840’erne til 1860’erne, hvor kunst og politik dannede parløb, og hvor kunstnerne lod sig forføre af tidens nationalliberale politikere, der talte for demokratiske styreformer. The particular focus is on the three parties‟ paradoxical presentation of national identity including values such as liberal-mindedness and tolerance while simultaneously arguing for intolerance towards Islam and Muslims. In other words, the focus of this thesis is answering the question „Why, according to the DPP, PVV and SD, is it necessary to be intolerant towards Islam and Muslims in order to remain tolerant and liberal?‟. Before analysing the communication of the three parties, the political and cultural contexts in Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden are examined. This background analysis shows how the immigration and multiculturalism debates have developed in the latter part of the 1900s up until today. It is seen that Denmark and the Netherlands today have very restrictive immigration policies and allow for a tone in the debate that many consider too harsh. In Sweden, it is not quite as harsh, although the debate seems to have become a little more critical than it used to be. The background analysis furthermore shows that particularly Danes have a clear vision of what Danish national identity is, whereas the Dutchmen are more polarised, partly showing an identity crisis. -

Danish Folkloristics: between Philology and Ethnology Michèle Simonsen University of Copenhagen [email protected] Abstract This paper gives an overview of the most important scholars within Danish folkloristics – Svend Grundtvig, Axel Olrik, Evald Tang Kristensen, Bengt Holbek, Iørn Piø – and argues that, although most of them were originally trained in philology and mostly interested in oral literature, they were all, each in their own way, concerned with the “ecology” of folklore: i.e. its interplay with its environment. Who were the “folk” and what was “lore” for these scholars? The paper also tries to assess how Danish folkloristics deals with the contemporary shift of paradigm from folkloristics to cultural studies. (Project Code No. JDR 2008B07.) Abstract Hans Christian Anderson is the most renowned fairy tale masters throughout the history. His works have been translated into different languages and spread all over the world. This paper intends to discuss Anderson’s works via a review of newly obtained literature relevant to his works. There is contradiction between Anderson’s actual life and dreams; both the natural revelation of children’s spirit and the profound expression of adults’ thinking contrastively exist in his works; not only the casual style in folk writing but also the poetic creation of literature are simultaneously employed in his works. These three aspects are contradictory but also uniform as well in Anderson. It is just in this contradiction and unity that Andersen’s works can be so splendid and simple, so bright and profound. Based on the above reason, the author points out that Anderson’s success is by no means an accidental phenomenon and his works can not be interpreted in a narrow sense as just fairy tales only for children, they have a profound influence on the adult literature. The opera is markedly different in its portrayal of Danish identity – Danishness – than the Danish operas of the 19th century, which were generally characterised by nationalist tropes of rural mediaeval glory or folk mythology, with scores heavily reliant on the folk-like strophic song. Maskarade presents a much greater musical stylistic variety, and is also a comedy, set in the Danish capital Copenhagen, among the bourgeoisie in the early 18th century. The thesis also examins potential reasons for the Maskarade’s rapid success within Denmark and status as a national opera. It seeks to investigate how Maskarade relates to previous Danish music drama, and to place it in a wider Danish operatic history, as well as look at its critical reception between the premiere and its 25th anniversary revival in 1931. While the thesis offers no conclusive answer to the question of Maskarade’s success in its first 25 years, it does posit that a main reason was the increasing fame of Carl Nielsen in that same period. -

Folk Narrative and the History of Culture
FOLK NARRATIVE AND THE HISTORY OF CULTURE REFLECTIONS OF DIFFERENT ERAS IN THE TEXTS AND PERCEPTIONS OF THE OLD FOLK BALLADS OF DENMARK EXEMPLIFIED THROUGH BALLADS ABOUT THE MEDIEVAL KING VALDEMAR II AND HIS QUEENS DAGMAR AND BENGERD Lene I. Jørgensen Abstract: The article illustrates that the texts and perceptions of The Old Folk Ballads of Denmark reflect traces of different eras. Ballads about the medieval King Valdemar II and his queens Dagmar and Bengerd (Infanta Berengária of Portugal) exemplify this. The formations of the narrated figures are medieval but the formations of the narrated plots are from the Renaissance and concern the arrangement of marriage. Their references concern both the traditional nar- ration of the Middle Ages and the social realities of the Renaissance. The public attention to the ballads increased in the Romantic era. Folk narrative research- ers launched the master-narrative about the formation and transmission of the ballads from the medieval time of their figures to the Renaissance telling-time of their plots. However, this master-narrative about the ballads as a phenom- enon covers for the recognition of their narratives. Today, the ballads are receiv- ing new attention through a canon for the primary school and in other ways. The master-narrative is reused and renewed in order to respond to the cultural conflict caused by the process of globalisation. The aim is to shape a new unity of the population that now includes both the “old” and “new” Danes. This con- tradicts with differentiated experiences of one of the two main groups within the population, introducing new alternatives for recognising and identifying with the narrated figures and plots in account. -

Crafting Words and Wood: Myth, Carving and Húsdrápa By Erik Schjeide A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Scandinavian Languages and Literatures in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor John Lindow, Chair Professor Jonas Wellendorf Professor Beate Fricke Fall 2015 Abstract Crafting Words and Wood: Myth, Carving and Húsdrápa by Erik Schjeide Doctor of Philosophy in Scandinavian Languages and Literatures University of California, Berkeley Professor John Lindow, Chair In the poem Húsdrápa, ca. 985, Úlfr Uggason described woodcarvings of mythological scenes adorning an Icelandic hall owned by the chieftain Óláfr pái. The performance, of which some verses have been passed down in writing, was an act of referential intermedia, insofar as the art form of skaldic poetry presented with woven words the content of a wood-carved medium that has long since rotted away. Hence, the composition of the poem combined with the carvings created a link that opens up a union between extant literary sources and material culture which contributes to expanding cultural insight. This study draws from a range of sources in order to answer central research questions regarding the appearance and qualities of the missing woodcarvings. Intermedia becomes interdisciplinary in the quest, as archaeological finds of Viking Age and early medieval woodcarvings and iconography help fill the void of otherwise missing artifacts. Old Norse literature provides clues to the mythic cultural values imbued in the wooden iconography. Anthropological and other theories drawn from the liberal arts also apply as legend, myth and art combine to inform cultural meaning.
