Inspired by Klein’s article, I analyze legends about “lord and lady” Margrethe (1353–1412), who reigned for decades as the effective ruler of the medieval union of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden. Proceeding through various groups of related legends, I show how these legends were adapted to Margrethe’s anomalous status as a female war leader, including their cross-fertilization with robber legends and the use of a ruse usually associated with male protagonists. This article ends by indicating the importance of place within history as articulated in legends. religions Article Doorway to Devotion: Recovering the Christian Nature of the Gosforth Cross Amanda Doviak Department of History of Art, University of York, York YO10 5DD, UK; [email protected] Abstract: The carved figural program of the tenth-century Gosforth Cross (Cumbria) has long been considered to depict Norse mythological episodes, leaving the potential Christian iconographic import of its Crucifixion carving underexplored. The scheme is analyzed here using earlier ex- egetical texts and sculptural precedents to explain the function of the frame surrounding Christ, by demonstrating how icons were viewed and understood in Anglo-Saxon England. The frame, signifying the iconic nature of the Crucifixion image, was intended to elicit the viewer’s compunction, contemplation and, subsequently, prayer, by facilitating a collapse of time and space that assim- ilates the historical event of the Crucifixion, the viewer’s present and the Parousia. Further, the arrangement of the Gosforth Crucifixion invokes theological concerns associated with the veneration of the cross, which were expressed in contemporary liturgical ceremonies and remained relevant within the tenth-century Anglo-Scandinavian context of the monument. In turn, understanding of the concerns underpinning this image enable potential Christian symbolic significances to be suggested for the remainder of the carvings on the cross-shaft, demonstrating that the iconographic program was selected with the intention of communicating, through multivalent frames of reference, the significance of Christ’s Crucifixion as the catalyst for the Second Coming. “To establish a free and open forum”: A memoir of the founding of the Grundtvig Society By S. A. J. Bradley With the passing of William Michelsen (b. 1913) in October 2001 died the last of the founding fathers of Grundtvig-Selskabet af 8. september 1947 [The Grundtvig Society of 8 September 1947] and of Grundtvig- Studier [Grundtvig Studies] the Society’s year-book.1 It was an appropriate time to recall, indeed to honour, the vision and the enthusiasm of that small group of Grundtvig-scholars - some very reverend and others just a touch irreverent, from several different academic disciplines and callings but all linked by their active interest in Grundtvig - who gathered in the bishop’s residence at Ribe in September 1947, to see what might come out of a cross-disciplinary discussion of their common subject. Only two years after the trauma of world war and the German occupation of Denmark, and amid all the post-war uncertainties, they talked of Grundtvig through the autumn night until, as the clock struck midnight and heralded Grundtvig’s birthday, 8 September, they formally resolved to establish a society that would serve as a free and open forum for the advancement of Grundtvig studies. The biographies of the principal names involved - who were not only theologians and educators but also historians and, conspicuously, literary scholars concerned with Grundtvig the poet - and the story of this post-war burgeoning of the scholarly reevaluation of Grundtvig’s achievements, legacy and significance, form a remarkable testimony to the integration of the Grundtvig inheritance in the mainstream of Danish life in almost all its departments, both before and after the watershed of the Second World War. -

Purpose: To support the instructional and research programs of the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures involving the literature and language studies of Old Norse/Icelandic, runes, and the historical and current literatures and languages of Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and the Faeroe Islands. B. Hist0tY of Collection: In the early 20th century, Scandinavian studies were taught in the English Department. The collections were built up significantly by prominent professors, notably Henning Larsen and George Flom. The George Flom Library of over 2,000 valuable items was donated in 1941, and the Henning Larsen collection was purchased in 1971. Since 1959 Scandinavian language, literature and cultural studies have been offered regularly through the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures. C. Estimate of Holdinis: 23,475 volumes. D. VISIONEN FOR DANMARK: EN POLITISK LANDSKABSKUNST RESUMÉ Årstallene 1814 og 1864 har altid markeret sig som smertelige ar i 1800-tallets historie: Tabet af Norge på den ene side og afståelsen af Slesvig og Holsten på den anden side. Disse skelsættende amputeringer reducerede det danske riges status og jordbesiddelser fra dobbeltmonarki af betragtelig størrelse til en lilleputstat med en grænse, der gik syd for Kolding. Det yndige land, som Adam Oehlenschläger (1779-1850) beskrev i national- sangen, blev stækket i størrelse og kraft efter 1814, og ud af denne stemning, der indfandt sig mellem årene 1814 og 1864, mobiliserede en landskabskunst sig med nye skildringer af det danske land. I billeder søgte kunstnerne at definere den særligt danske natur, som den kunne opleves i skovene, ved kysterne og arkitektoniske seværdigheder. Disse billeder, der blev til i den tidsånd, hvor samfundets magthavere og kulturelle elite havde behov for at definere en ny og forstærket national identitet, var imidlertid ofte politisk motiveret. ORFIELD PART II* LOCAL GOVERNMENT In 1841 local government was reformed by introducing parish councils to which the peasants elected some representatives. 233 In turn the parish councils elected members of the county councils. The pastors were no longer to be chairmen of the parish councils, but continued to be members ex officio. The right to vote was extended to owners of but 1.4 acres. The councils were created to deal with school matters and poor relief; but road maintenance, public health, business and industrial licenses, and liquor licenses were also within their province. The right to vote in local elections was long narrowly restricted. Under legislation of 1837 the six largest cities other than Copenhagen chose coun- cilmen on a property basis permitting only seven per cent of the population to vote. Early in the nineteenth century rural communities began to vote for poor law and school officials. -

Master‟s thesis Mette Pedersen Culture, Communication and Globalization Fall 2011 Not One of Us: National identity versus Islam - A comparative discourse analysis of the Danish People‟s Party, the PVV & the Sweden Democrats By Mette Pedersen Master‟s Thesis Fall 2011 Aalborg University Culture, Communication and Globalisation Supervisor: Susi Meret Characters: 191,754 (80 pages) Hand in date: July 29, 2011 ABSTRACT In this thesis, the communication of the Danish People‟s Party (DPP), the Party for Freedom (PVV) and the Sweden Democrats is analysed. The particular focus is on the three parties‟ paradoxical presentation of national identity including values such as liberal-mindedness and tolerance while simultaneously arguing for intolerance towards Islam and Muslims. In other words, the focus of this thesis is answering the question „Why, according to the DPP, PVV and SD, is it necessary to be intolerant towards Islam and Muslims in order to remain tolerant and liberal?‟. Before analysing the communication of the three parties, the political and cultural contexts in Denmark, the Netherlands and Sweden are examined. This background analysis shows how the immigration and multiculturalism debates have developed in the latter part of the 1900s up until today. It is seen that Denmark and the Netherlands today have very restrictive immigration policies and allow for a tone in the debate that many consider too harsh. In Sweden, it is not quite as harsh, although the debate seems to have become a little more critical than it used to be. The background analysis furthermore shows that particularly Danes have a clear vision of what Danish national identity is, whereas the Dutchmen are more polarised, partly showing an identity crisis. -

Tangherlini, ed. and trans. Danish Folktales, Legends, and Other Stories. Seatt le: University of Washington Press, 2013. 280 pp, DVD. $50.00 Reviewed by Jason Schroeder In the preface to Danish Folktales, Legends and Other Stories, editor Timothy Tangherlini announces that the book represents an att empt to rethink how folklore collections are published. His att empt succeeds by harnessing the possibilities of computer databases to focus on the individual folklore informants and their repertoires in context. Folklore collections are generally centered around a generic concept: fairy tale, folktale, ballad, proverb, folk belief, legend, etc., and the genres are divided into subgenres: legends about revenants or legends about priests, for example. The concept of genre and its application in folklore editions has its basis in natural sciences, botany in particular. Tangherlini points out the weakness of such single designator classifi cation systems. A legend may have a ghost and a priest that exorcises the ghost: what type of legend is it then? What happens when fairy tales merge with legends? Perhaps most critically, Tangherlini explains that the human beings who tell the stories and sing the songs are eff ectively erased, as are their repertoires and the sequence in which they tell their stories to collectors.
