Shalom, Not Bigotry: Orthopraxis as Response to Karl Gutzkow’s Wally, die Zweiflerin (1835) _________________________________ Andrew Wisely Baylor University Waco, Texas Abstract Karl Gutzkow’s Wally, die Zweiflerin (1835) features Cäsar, a brilliant and cold cynic who simultaneously courts and “emancipates” Wally, souring the restless young aristocrat toward her Christian faith and driving her to despair. Gutzkow’s roughshod novel provoked from critic Wolfgang Menzel a polemic as alarming as the novel itself, but that did it little justice. Mark Walhout’s concept of “orthopraxis,” a practice for determining how a novel encourages or discourages shalom, is a starting point for going beyond critical vendettas, and for challenging the purely empirical de- scriptions of epochal irresponsibility emphasized thus far in the criticism of the novel. Count Clemens Metternich (1773–1859), synonymous with the ab- solutism of the German Confederation in the Restoration years between 1815 and 1848, did everything in his power to suppress the impulses of reform in the 1830s in a group of writers known as “Young Germany.” When it appeared five years after the July Revolution of 1830, Karl Gutzkow’s (1811–1878) novel Wally, die Zweiflerin (1835) unleashed one of the major scandals of Young Germany’s ongoing provocations against Metternichean absolutism. A polemic against established religion, the novel quickly at- tracted a blistering response from the venerable critic Wolfgang Menzel (1798–1873), whose preference for vendetta above thoughtful engagement will be taken in this paper as emblematic of much literary criticism based on ostensibly “Christian” principles. Menzel is examined here as representa- tive of all critics unable to suspend animosity long enough to show charity JCFL 7 (2006): 10–28 Wisely 11 toward disagreeable texts. -

Understanding the Present: The Representation of Contemporary History in Ludwig Börne, Heinrich Heine, and Georg Büchner Michael Swellander Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2019 © 2018 Michael Swellander All rights reserved ABSTRACT Understanding the Present: The Representation of Contemporary History in Ludwig Börne, Heinrich Heine, and Georg Büchner Michael Swellander Understanding the Present examines the thematization of the historical present in nineteenth-century German literary texts. In theorizations of political literature, such as Jean- Paul Sartre’s writings on “committed literature,” an emphatic concept of the present is a given. Of course, the present is a notoriously elusive temporality. The texts discussed in this dissertation, rather than focusing on accurate sociological representations of the present or an intensive rhetorical engagement in its political discourse, interrogate how the present can be evoked in literature in the first place. Understanding the Present discusses the forms privileged by certain authors in the representation of the present – prose, periodicals, drama – as well as the paradoxes such approaches posed. Rather than discussing these texts in terms of “operative literature” or “committed literature,” which has been a trend in scholarship since the 1960s, this dissertation approaches the nineteenth century from the perspective of so-called Gegenwartsliteratur. It does not claim the successful or unsuccessful political intervention of these texts, but rather shows how their authors imagined a literary intervention in the political present could occur at all. Chapter one shows Ludwig Börne’s popular magazine Die Wage: Eine Zeitschrift für Bürgerleben, Wissenschaft und Kunst, not only as surreptitiously carrying barbs against state- sanctioned censorship, as is most common in studies of the periodical, but as following a program of political historiography. -

Grell: Liberal Affect and Literary Culture: The Politics of Feeling in Mid-Nineteenth Century German Fiction (Under the direction of Jonathan M. Hess) Liberal Affect and Literary Culture: The Politics of Feeling in Mid-Nineteenth Century German Fiction, develops a new model for understanding the role of literature in the formative years of German liberalism. Traditional narratives about the emergence of liberal ideology in nineteenth-century Germany frequently stress political failure by way of arguing for a Sonderweg approach to German modernity. In partial dissent from these accounts, I explore how German liberalism is significant for what it does achieve, and not only as a result of its failures. Against the grain of teleological accounts of German political development and their narrative of political and institutional miscarriage (e.g., Mommsen, Fischer, Wehler), my research engages the diverse and far-flung culture of popular prose fiction between 1830 and 1860 as a site where German liberalism succeeded during its formative years. In so doing, I am mindful not to conflate liberal success entirely with bourgeois success, an impulse that tacitly informs the basis of Geoff Eley and David Blackbourn’s seminal work. -

Classic Poetry Series Heinrich Heine - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Heinrich Heine(13 December 1797 – 17 February 1856) Christian Johann Heinrich Heine was one of the most significant German poets of the 19th century. He was also a journalist, essayist, and literary critic. He is best known outside Germany for his early lyric poetry, which was set to music in the form of Lieder (art songs) by composers such as Robert Schumann and Franz Schubert. Heine's later verse and prose is distinguished by its satirical wit and irony. His radical political views led to many of his works being banned by German authorities. Heine spent the last 25 years of his life as an expatriate in Paris. <b>Childhood and Youth</b> Heine was born in Düsseldorf, Rhineland, into a Jewish family. He was called "Harry" as a child, but after his baptism in 1825 he became "Heinrich". Heine's father, Samson Heine (1764–1828), was a textile merchant. His mother Peira (known as "Betty"), née van Geldern (1771–1859), was the daughter of a physician. Heinrich was the eldest of the four children; his siblings were Charlotte, Gustav - who later became Baron Heine-Geldern and publisher of the Viennese newspaper Das Fremdenblatt - and Maximilian, later a physician in Saint Petersburg. Düsseldorf was then a small town with a population of around 16,000. The Revolution in neighbouring France and the subsequent Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars which involved Germany meant that Düsseldorf had a complicated political history during Heine's childhood. It had been the capital of the Duchy of Jülich-Berg but at the time of his birth it was under French occupation.
