So veranstaltete das DHI Rom in Verbindung mit dem Seminar für Mittlere und Neuere Kirchengeschichte der Westfälischen Wil- helms-Universität Münster beim 47. Deutschen Historikertag in Dres- den vom 30. September bis 3. Oktober 2008 eine Sektion zum Thema „Bleibt im Vatikanischen Geheimarchiv vieles zu geheim? Historische Grundlagenforschung in Mittelalter und Neuzeit“. Am Beispiel von Projekten aus verschiedenen Epochen wie dem Repertorium Germa- nicum, den päpstlichen Hauptinstruktionen oder den Nuntiaturberich- ten von Eugenio Pacelli und Cesare Orsenigo wurden die Bedeutung der Erschließung und kritischen Aufbereitung großer Quellenkorpora hervorgehoben und neue Präsentations- und Auswertungsmöglichkei- ten durch die elektronischen Medien vorgestellt. Die Akten der ersten unter dem Dach der Unione Internazionale degli Istituti di Archeologia, Storia e Storia dell’Arte in Roma durch- geführten wissenschaftlichen internationalen Tagung sind erschienen (vgl. S. XLV). Die Veranstaltung kam auf Anregung und unter Mitwir- kung des römischen DHI zustande. Unterdessen wurden weitere Kon- gresse durchgeführt. Die Unione wurde nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg gegründet, ursprünglich um die deutschen Institutsbibliotheken treu- händerisch zu verwalten. Inzwischen bildet sie ein wichtiges Forum für die internationale Zusammenarbeit und den Austausch zwischen Archäologen, Historikern und Kunsthistorikern aus 19 verschiedenen Ländern; ihr gehören 34 italienische und ausländische Forschungsin- stitute in Rom an. Zum ersten Mal wurde mit italienischen und deutschen Koope- rationspartnern eine mehrtägige Tagung in Genua durchgeführt: „Das QFIAB 89 (2009) X JAHRESBERICHT 2008 politische System Genuas. Beziehungen, Konflikte und Vermittlungen in den Außenbeziehungen und bei der Kontrolle des Territoriums.“ In der Deutschen Botschaft beim Heiligen Stuhl wurde das Buch „Die bayerische Gesandtschaft in Rom in der frühen Neuzeit“ von Bettina Scherbaum präsentiert. Im Jahr 2010 wird anlässlich des 50jährigen Jubiläums der Mu- sikgeschichtlichen Abteilung des DHI Rom die Gesellschaft für Musik- forschung ihre Jahrestagung in Rom und damit zum ersten Mal au- ßerhalb Deutschlands durchführen. Die Gesellschaft hat die Einla- dung des Instituts angenommen. Festakt und Jahrestagung werden in der ersten Novemberwoche 2010 stattfinden. Über die laufenden wissenschaftlichen Unternehmungen hinaus (vgl. S. XXXIIff.) wurden vier neue Drittmittelprojekte in Angriff ge- nommen: „Zwischen langobardischer und normannischer Einheit. Kre- ative Zerstörungen Unteritaliens im Spannungsfeld rivalisierender Re- ligionen, Kulturen und politischer Mächte“ (vgl. S. XXXII); „Die Opern- bestände der Bibliotheken römischer Fürstenhäuser: Erschließung und Auswertung“ (vgl. S. XXXVIII); Retrokonversion und Digitalisie- rung der Libretto-Sammlung der Musikgeschichtlichen Abteilung des DHI Rom (vgl. S. XXXVIIf.); die Online-Edition der Nuntiaturberichte Eugenio Pacellis, ein Kooperationsprojekt, das federführend von Prof. Dr. Hubert Wolf in Zusammenarbeit mit dem DHI Rom und dem Ar- chivio Segreto Vaticano durchgeführt wird (vgl. S. XXXVIf.). Mehrere institutsinterne Veranstaltungen dienten dazu, unter dem thematischen Dach „Akkulturation, Kulturtransfer, Kulturver- gleich“ den Austausch über theoretische und methodische Fragen zu fördern. Dazu wurden ein Seminar am 31. 1./1. 2. in Celleno (Provinz Viterbo) sowie Workshops am 9. 10. und 11. 12. durchgeführt. Im kom- menden Jahr ist u.a. ein weiteres Seminar geplant, zu dem auch Mit- glieder des wissenschaftlichen Beirats sowie weitere Gäste geladen werden sollen. Mit den Verandagesprächen wurde ein neues Format entwickelt, das insbesondere Nachwuchswissenschaftler ansprechen und Gele- genheit bieten soll, deren Projekte in zwangloser Form zu diskutieren. Entsprechende Veranstaltungen wurden durchgeführt am: 19. 3., 17. 4., 21. 4., 12. 6., 19. 6., 7. 7., 24. 9., 12. 11., 26. 11., 9. 12. QFIAB 89 (2009) JAHRESBERICHT 2008 XI Die Leitung der Arbeitsgemeinschaft für die Neueste Geschichte Italiens wurde im Rahmen der diesjährigen Tagung in Berlin von Prof. Dr. Christof Dipper (Darmstadt) an Prof. Dr. Gabriele Clemens (Saar- brücken) zum 1. 1. 2009 übergeben. Die enge Zusammenarbeit zwi- schen dem römischen Institut und der Arbeitsgemeinschaft soll fort- geführt werden. Seit September 2008 bietet das DHI Rom einen Newsletter

Writing the history of historiography is a tricky business. There is no unbiased way of doing it, and it can serve different goals that at best complement and at worst contradict each other. The genre can seem both suitable to promote one’s own academic agenda and to reflect upon one’s own ideological constraints, epistemological presumptions, and social aspirations. This article analyses the motivations and methods of recent authors in the field, and it does so principally by focusing on the roles they attribute to historians past and present. To enable comparisons, the article includes works with a national, European and global framework, on early modern and late modern historiography, by intellectual, cultural and post-colonialist historians. A general conclusion will be that while most publications use the genre to pursue academic interests with epistemic arguments, only few try to exploit its potential for critical self-reflexion. As a consequence, they tend to be of limited credibility and originality when it comes to describing historiography’s functions and historians’ roles. This article does not treat their lack of critical commitment as an isolated phenomenon in a historiographical sub-field, but as a symptom of a larger problem within academic scholarship today. There are, however, exceptions to the rule, and this article will also try to work out their particular strengths. In the early days of book reviewing, critics were busy looking for a solution to a problem that the new genre brought with it: how to expose published errors without soiling their authors’ name.

    Manoscritti Tonini strumento di corredo al fondo documentario a cura di Maria Cecilia Antoni Biblioteca Civica Gambalunga. Rimini. 2013 1 Il Fondo Tonini entrò in biblioteca nel 1924, in agosto una prima parte: più di 1500 fra volumi e opuscoli e dieci buste di manoscritti...e tutti i manoscritti, codici e pergamene appartenuti ai Tonini, custoditi dai fratelli Ricci,1 il resto in dicembre, in una stanza al piano terra di palazzo Gambalunga; il 26 aprile 1925 viene trasmessa al Sindaco di Rimini una Relazione degli esecutori testamentari: Alessandro Tosi e padre Gregorio Giovanardi2. La relazione, dattiloscritta, intitolata: Elenco manoscritti, opuscoli, libri di Luigi e Carlo Tonini, donati alla Biblioteca Gambalunga descrive nove nuclei contrassegnati da lettere alfabetiche (A-I) e da capoversi, interni ai nuclei, numerati progressivamente da 1 a 733; i nuclei A-F sono preceduti dal titolo: Luigi Tonini 4; il nucleo G è invece intitolato: Manoscritti di Carlo Tonini 5; seguono H: Pergamene (nn.47-53); I: Raccolta di documenti riguardanti la storia di Rimini ed altri luoghi, originali ed in copia. Questa descrizione tuttavia non permetteva più il rinvenimento dei documenti a causa di interventi, spostamenti e condizionamenti successivi6. 1 Articolo di G.     Manoscritti della Biblioteca Bartoliniana MANOSCRITTI DELLA BIBLIOTECA “BARTOLINIANA” DELL’ARCIDIOCESI DI UDINE INVENTARIO Inventariazione realizzata da Luca Olivo nel 2011 per conto dell’Archivio Storico Diocesano di Udine a cura dell’Istituto “Pio Paschini” per la Storia della Chiesa in Friuli 1 Manoscritti della Biblioteca Bartoliniana Il conte Antonio Bartolini1 appartenne ad una delle più insigni famiglie nobiliari friulane, di antica schiatta fiorentina. A Firenze infatti gli avi del conte Antonio ricoprirono varie cariche pubbliche ma pare la loro origine fosse quella di mugnai. I Bartolini si trasferirono in Friuli nella prima metà del Trecento e già nel 1518 erano annoverati nel Libro d’oro della nobiltà come conti. Nel corso del Settecento la famiglia riuscì ad acquisire notevoli fortune grazie ad una redditizia attività di possidenti agrari con varie tenute, soprattutto a Buttrio. Agronomo fu il padre di Antonio Bartolini, Ettore. Questi nel 1737 sposò Francesca Manin, appartenente alla prestigiosissima casata. Il matrimonio era avvenuto nel quadro di una specifica strategia di alleanze tra famiglie nobili e nell’intento di dare ulteriore lustro ai Bartolini, le cui fortune nel campo dell’imprenditoria agraria potevano gettare ombre sul loro grado di nobiltà. Antonio Bartolini nacque a Udine il 12 settembre 1741 e già all’età di 6 anni rimase orfano di madre, essendo in quell’anno deceduta Francesca Bartolini Manin all’età di soli 38 anni. Difficile stabilire con certezza la formazione di Antonio ma dato che il fratello maggiore Gregorio (1738 – 1828) e il fratellastro minore Giovanni Battista (1754 – 1823) studiarono al Collegio dei Barnabiti di Udine pare possibile che anche il giovane conte fosse stato colà indirizzato dal padre.

    Introduction: Castles Between the 9th and 10th centuries, the new invasions that were threatening Europe, led the powerful feudal lords to build castles and fortresses on inaccessible heights, at the borders of their territories, along the main roads and ri- vers’ fords, or above narrow valleys or near bridges. The defense of property and of the rural populations from ma- rauding invaders, however, was not the only need during those times: the widespread banditry, the local guerrillas between towns and villages that were disputing territori- es and powers, and the general political crisis, that inve- sted the unguided Italian kingdom, have forced people to seek safety and security near the forts. Fortified villages, that could accommodate many families, were therefore built around castles. Those people were offered shelter in exchange of labor in the owner’s lands. Castles eventually were turned into fortified villages, with the lord’s residen- ce, the peasants homes and all the necessary to the community life. When the many threats gradually ceased, castles were built in less endangered places to bear witness to the authority of the local lords who wanted to brand the territory with their power, which was represented by the security offered by the fortress and garrisons. Over the centuries, the castles have combined several functions: territory’s fortress and garrison against invaders and internal uprisings ; warehouse to gather and protect the crops; the place where the feudal lord administered justice and where horsemen and troops lived.
