R ts John Rignall In Middlemarch, George Eliot draws a character passionately absorbed by abstruse allusion and obscure epigraphs. Casaubon’s obsession is a cautonary tale, but Adam Roberts nonetheless sees in him an invitaton to take Eliot’s use of epigraphy and allusion seriously, and this book is an atempt to do just that. Roberts considers the epigraph as a mirror that refracts the meaning of a text, and that thus carries important resonances for the way Eliot’s novels generate their meanings. In this lively and provoking study, he tracks down those allusions and quotatons that have hitherto gone unidentfed by scholars, examining their MIDDLEMARCH relatonship to the text in which they sit to unfurl a broader argument about the novel – both this novel, and the novel form itself. Middlemarch: Epigraphs and Mirrors is both a study of George Eliot and a meditaton on the textuality of fcton. Writing the history of historiography is a tricky business. There is no unbiased way of doing it, and it can serve different goals that at best complement and at worst contradict each other. The genre can seem both suitable to promote one’s own academic agenda and to reflect upon one’s own ideological constraints, epistemological presumptions, and social aspirations. This article analyses the motivations and methods of recent authors in the field, and it does so principally by focusing on the roles they attribute to historians past and present. To enable comparisons, the article includes works with a national, European and global framework, on early modern and late modern historiography, by intellectual, cultural and post-colonialist historians. A general conclusion will be that while most publications use the genre to pursue academic interests with epistemic arguments, only few try to exploit its potential for critical self-reflexion. As a consequence, they tend to be of limited credibility and originality when it comes to describing historiography’s functions and historians’ roles. This article does not treat their lack of critical commitment as an isolated phenomenon in a historiographical sub-field, but as a symptom of a larger problem within academic scholarship today. There are, however, exceptions to the rule, and this article will also try to work out their particular strengths. In the early days of book reviewing, critics were busy looking for a solution to a problem that the new genre brought with it: how to expose published errors without soiling their authors’ name. -

Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2009. 280 pp.; £ 55.00 ISBN 9780199576319 “No one who was there will forget his inspiring inaugural lecture, in which he held a room spellbound as he explicated, with wit and energy, the intricate dances of the skeleton formes used to print Francis Bacon’s Novum Organum.” The explication remembered by David Colclough in the Times Higher Education obituary of Graham Rees now forms a part of this splendid monographic study of the Jacobean King’s Printers, the joint achievement of Rees, who died shortly before its publication, and Maria Wakely. The King’s Printing House had a monopoly on the printing of the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer in England, and was also responsible for many other publications, from proclamations to the 1606 English translation of the atlas of Ortelius and the 1620 Instauratio magna – the latter work making a bridge between this book and Rees and Wakely’s contributions (including the editing of the Instauratio magna) to the Oxford Francis Bacon, of which Rees was the director. -

V. 2010 UNESCO JAHR VON MARKO ANTUN DE DOMINIS 450-Jahrestag der Geburt von Marko Antun de Dominis, Philosoph und Wissenschaftler (ܐ1560 -†1624) Marko Antun de Dominis spielte in der intellektuellen Welt an der Wende vom 16. Jh. zum 17. Jh. eine wichtige Rolle auf dem Gebiet der Naturwissenschaften und Theologie. Er war Bischof von Senj und später Erzbischof von Split. Sein Amt bestimmte der Konflikt zwischen zwei Interpretationen des Christentums und der Lehre von Christus, was mit der Frage der Kirchenorganisation und nicht seltenen dem Missbrauch der Kirchenherrschaft und eben der Päpste verbunden war. Er versuchte einen Weg zu finden, um die zukünftige europäische Religionstrennung und Konflikte wie z.B. den Dreißigjährigen Krieg zu verhindern. Wenn man nur diesen Aspekt in Betracht zieht, kommt man zur Erkenntnis der Größe einer solchen Persönlichkeit. Marko Antun de Dominis (1560 -1624) war auch ein der Pioniere in der Physikforschungen, auf dem Gebiet der Optik und der Lichtbrechung. Auf diesem Gebiet veröffentlichte er im Jahr 1611 unter dem Titel: “Tractatus de radiis visus et lucis, perspectivis et iride” eine epochale Wissenschaftsarbeit, die einen großen Einfluss auf die zukünftige Forschungen der Optik hatte. Diese Wissenschaftsarbeit wurde später von Isaac Newton gepriesen und auch zitiert. Aber uns interessieren die historischen und theologischen Fragen im Rahmen des Dialogs zwischen Katholizismus und Protestantismus, denn die Hauptcharakteristik Europas an der Wende vom 16. zum 17. Jh. war die Religionstrennung zwischen dem europäischen katholischen Süden und dem protestantischen Norden. Marco Antonio de Dominis alias Jesuitenseminar in Padua ging Marco jedoch auf seiner Arbeit in Padua. -

4. Ars historica como arte da prudência. Quando eu considero a quantidade e a variedade dos acidentes, das enfermidades, do acaso e da violência a que a vida do homem é submetida e quantas coisas devem concorrer no ano para que a colheita seja boa, não há nada que me espante mais que ver um homem velho, um ano fértil (Francesco Guicciardini. Ricordi, máxima 161). 4.1 Uma construção de fatos e palavras. Tucídides: sobre a distinção entre logos e ergon e o procedimento da autópsia. O princípio da utilidade: Tucídides e Políbio. O tratamento latino para a tensão entre res e verba. Os preceitos da ars historica no De Oratore. A história como monumento da virtus: Salústio e Tito Lívio. Embora a história – entendida como prática de inquirição sobre as grandes e memoráveis obras dos homens calcada numa "atitude crítica com relação ao registro de acontecimentos”,1 cujo propósito central seria o de salvar os feitos humanos do esquecimento –2 tenha não apenas surgido na Grécia do V século como alcançado, com Heródoto e Tucídides, sua maior expressividade no mundo antigo, a discussão acerca da concepção retórica de história predominante na Antiguidade deve dar atenção especial às reflexões de Cícero no livro II do diálogo De Oratore, isto porque os gregos jamais chegaram a definir a história como um gênero retórico-poético. Porém, antes de discutir os preceitos ciceronianos sobre a escrita da história, dedicarei algumas páginas à análise da tensão entre logos e ergon na História da Guerra do Peloponeso de Tucídides, assim como ao exame da concepção de autópsia e do privilégio do testemunho ocular sobre os relatos orais predominantes entre os historiadores gregos, como 1 MOMIGLIANO, Arnaldo. -

194 Zdeněk V. David Universalist Aspirations of the Utraquist Church Zdeněk V. David (Washington, D.C.) An important legacy of Utraquism to the subsequent Czech political culture was its universalist outlook. This conclusion may appear paradoxical consider - ing that the national accent seemed so strong in the Bohemian Reformation and especially during the Bohemian religious wars. Such an assumption of national exclusivity led to the mistaken view that the Bohemians might be sat - isfied with an exceptional ecclesiastical status, as Rome saw it at the Council of Basel in 1434-1436 and in the issuance of a special privilege of the lay chalice for the Bohemians by Pope Pius IV in 1564. These tactics of appeasement, however, failed. They ignored the basic fact that the Bohemians’ goal was to reform the (Western) Church as a whole. In the eyes of the Utraquists, the purpose of the Czech nation was not to assert a peculiar set of ethnically grounded beliefs, but to serve as a vehicle for the realisation of a universal purpose. Subsequently, this outlook harmonised with the cosmopolitan character of the Enlighten - ment and eventually with that of political liberalism. In an earlier article, I discussed the Utraquist legacy of liberal ecclesiology. 1 In this paper the Utraquists’ universalism is treated in terms of their contin - ued, albeit qualified, attachment to the Roman Church, as well as their rela - tionship to other groups that sought to reform the entire scope of Western Christendom along the lines of liberal Catholicism. 2 This essay also seeks to answer the charges that the Utraquists’ ambition to reform the Church of Rome revealed signs of sycophancy, quixotic idiosyncrasy, and megalomania in their actions.
