2. Uurimisküsimused Lähtuvalt töö eesmärgist on magistritöö uurimisküsimused järgmised: 1) Milline on Georg Manceliuse profiil teoloogina? 2) Milline oli Georg Manceliuse panus Tartu Ülikooli arengus? 3) Kas 17. sajandi Tartu ülikooli usuteaduskond oli ülimalt ortodoksne luterlik

  • A Study of the Idea of the VERBAL INSPIRATION OP the SCRIPTURES
A Study of the Idea of THE VERBAL INSPIRATION OP THE SCRIPTURES with special reference to. the Reformers and Post-Reformation Thinkers of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of Divinity of the University of Edinburgh in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the Ph.D. degree. Allan Andrew Zaun, B.A., B.D- May 15,1937 PREFACE. At the outset of this study it will be well to define terms. By "verbal Inspiration11 we mean the theory which main tains that in the process of recording the Scriptures, the Holy Spirit Himself selected the very words which the writers used. In the same sense that Milton is the author of Paradise Lost, the Holy Spirit is held to be the author of Scripture. Whether communicated by suggestion or actual dictation, the words of the text are the exact words, and no other, which God wished to have employed. The form, as well as the content, is liter ally given by Gk>d. This, briefly, is the verbal theory. We recognize the intimate, but not absolutely inseparable, con nection between thought and language. To the extent that words can be an adequate expression of the thought, Inspiration is verbal; however, the classic formulation of the doctrine, in its insistence upon dictation and verbal inerrancy, introduced mechanical features with which many scholars today cannot find themselves in full agreement. In the Reformation and post-Reformation periods we are confining our study principally to the dogmaticians of Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands; nq attempt has been made to trace the development of the doctrine in England and Scotland, which, however, were profoundly influenced by the Genevan Reformation.

  • Georg Calixtus and the Humanist Tradition
Georg Calixtus and the Humanist Tradition Christian Thorsten Callisen Diploma of Financial Services (Financial Planning) Finsia Postgraduate Certificate in Business USQ Research Students Centre Division of Research & Commercialisation Queensland University of Technology Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts (Research) 2010 i Keywords Georg Calixtus (1586–1656); Isaac Casaubon (1559–1614); humanism; ars historica; consensus antiquitatis; calixtine theology; irenicism; Renaissance; history of ideas; early modern Europe ii Abstract Georg Calixtus (1586–1656) was a Lutheran theologian, prominent in the German lands during the first half of the seventeenth century. Existing research focuses on Calixtus‘ contributions to religious and theological debates, particularly in regard to his role in the Syncretistic Controversy of the latter half of the seventeenth century, and in regard to his unique position as a Lutheran who aspired to reunion between the different Christian confessions. This thesis problematises this focus on Calixtus by theologians and ecclesiastical historians, and argues that the genesis and transmission of his ideas cannot be fully appreciated without considering his relationship with the broader intellectual milieu of early modern Europe. It does this by exploring Calixtus‘ interaction with the humanist tradition, in particular by reconsidering his relationship with Isaac Casaubon (1559–1614), and by exploring his work in light of intellectual movements that were taking place outside the Christian church. In so doing, this thesis argues that Calixtus made contributions to early modern thought that have been overlooked in the existing literature. It also becomes apparent that much research remains to be done to gain a more accurate picture of his place in the early modern intellectual landscape, and of his legacy to later generations of scholars.

By reconstructing the overlapping crises of the seventeenth century as they occurred in Lübeck, the capital city of the Hanseatic League, I argue that structural crisis alone did not cause permanent changes in the ordering of urban politics and religious life inherited from the late middle ages and Reformation. In fact, the “Little Ice Age” (c. 1570-1630) and Thirty Years’ War (1618-1648) elicited very different responses from the city’s Lutheran pastors and oligarchic magistrates. In contrast to better-studied cities like Augsburg and Frankfurt, dramatic change came to Lübeck only when guildsmen mounted a series of overlapping attacks on elite property and religious non-conformists in the 1660s.

His influences were many, but one strong influence in his life's work was that of the Protestant Reformation and the theology of the Lutheran church. Through this research, it is evident that Bach strongly held to the doctrines and theology of the Lutheran church and that his employment in the Lutheran church was not merely a vocation for him, but an outward expression of his inward religious and theological conviction.

  • 275 LSQ 44: 4 276 Foreword
LSQ 44: 4 275 LSQ 44: 4 276 Foreword The seventeenth century is a black hole in Lutheran church history. Often the student of Lutheranism leaps from the time of Martin Luther and the Book of Concord to Spener and the beginning of Pietism. The implication is that there is nothing of value in the intervening period. Yet when one reads Pieper’s or Hoenecke’s dogmatics and Walther’s Pastoral Theology or Church and Ministry he fi nds a voluminous number of quotes from men who lived in the seventeenth century. Our Synodical Conference fathers certainly found value in the theology of the seventeenth century and the articles in this Quarterly are encouraging the same in our present age. The sermon by Dr. Thomas Kuster of Bethany Lutheran College and Seminary encourages us to trace our Christian roots from St. Paul’s missionary journeys through the Reformation to the settlement of the Midwest. This sermon is based on 2 Timothy 1: 5-10. The most important theologian of the seventeenth century was Johann Gerhard (1582-1637). After Luther and Chemnitz he is the foremost theologian of the Lutheran church. The essay Gerhard—Theologian and Pastor is an introduction to the life and work of this great seventeenth century dogmatician. This paper was presented September 2003 in Leipzig, Germany, at the fi ftieth anniversary of the Lutherisches Theologisches Seminar. It has been said that Gerhard was third in the series of Lutheran theologians and after him there was no fourth. If one were to speak of a fourth, the position would be assigned either to Abraham Calov (1612-1686) or Johann Quenstedt (1617-1688).
