Moldenhauer The Leipzig Debate of 1519, among other things, solidified ecclesial authority as a central question between Martin Luther and Catholic theologians. Indulgences, the topic of Luther’s “Ninety-Five Theses,” were an afterthought at Leipzig; the cursory discussion on indulgences near the conclusion of the Leipzig Debate revealed a great deal of commonality between the debaters. However, this common ground mattered little by the end of the debate. Already before Leipzig, the question of authority had become central, and that question was firmly established as the heart of the conversation and the dividing point at Leipzig. That move proved significant, as Leipzig and its aftermath set the terms of the conversation for the following decades. Ecclesial and papal authority remained a central starting point— perhaps the central starting point—of theological dialogue between Lutherans and Catholics throughout Luther’s life. In the last years of his life, Luther objected to the pope’s claim to have authority over a council, and to the pope’s maneuvering to determine who would attend the council.2 One could ask how the Reformation might have gone differently if there were a different starting point for the conversation between Lutherans and Rome. Rather than drift into virtual history, here I aim to analyze something concrete: a different way of approaching theology that Luther laid out in his later years. Luther puts forth Christology as a basis and starting point for theology. But to clear the way for that argument, I will first identify and set aside some paradigmatic notions about Luther in order to consider elements of Luther’s thought that do not fit within this paradigm. Several axioms about Luther function as a kind of paradigm in Luther studies. Luther, as everyone knows, was not a systematic theologian. Luther rejects scholastic theology and philosophy. His works are reactionary, determined by the circumstances around Luther and the opponents he addresses. These axioms are points so well established in the field that no evidence is required or sought for them. That is, since Luther’s works are reactionary, Luther studies typically begin by framing the particular controversy Luther is participating in at the moment. Often this framing simply takes Luther’s word for what his opponents say rather than read those opponents in their own words. Since Luther rejects scholasticism, scholars do not read the scholastics, and see no need to analyze them or look for points of continuity with them in Luther’s thought. And, since Luther is not a systematic theologian, scholars do not bother to look for elements of systematic thought in Luther. Taken together, these points function like a paradigm in Thomas Kuhn’s analysis of the history of science. They constitute an agreed-upon,

By "verbal Inspiration11 we mean the theory which main­ tains that in the process of recording the Scriptures, the Holy Spirit Himself selected the very words which the writers used. In the same sense that Milton is the author of Paradise Lost, the Holy Spirit is held to be the author of Scripture. Whether communicated by suggestion or actual dictation, the words of the text are the exact words, and no other, which God wished to have employed. The form, as well as the content, is liter­ ally given by Gk>d. This, briefly, is the verbal theory. We recognize the intimate, but not absolutely inseparable, con­ nection between thought and language. To the extent that words can be an adequate expression of the thought, Inspiration is verbal; however, the classic formulation of the doctrine, in its insistence upon dictation and verbal inerrancy, introduced mechanical features with which many scholars today cannot find themselves in full agreement. In the Reformation and post-Reformation periods we are confining our study principally to the dogmaticians of Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands; nq attempt has been made to trace the development of the doctrine in England and Scotland, which, however, were profoundly influenced by the Genevan Reformation.

Existing research focuses on Calixtus‘ contributions to religious and theological debates, particularly in regard to his role in the Syncretistic Controversy of the latter half of the seventeenth century, and in regard to his unique position as a Lutheran who aspired to reunion between the different Christian confessions. This thesis problematises this focus on Calixtus by theologians and ecclesiastical historians, and argues that the genesis and transmission of his ideas cannot be fully appreciated without considering his relationship with the broader intellectual milieu of early modern Europe. It does this by exploring Calixtus‘ interaction with the humanist tradition, in particular by reconsidering his relationship with Isaac Casaubon (1559–1614), and by exploring his work in light of intellectual movements that were taking place outside the Christian church. In so doing, this thesis argues that Calixtus made contributions to early modern thought that have been overlooked in the existing literature. It also becomes apparent that much research remains to be done to gain a more accurate picture of his place in the early modern intellectual landscape, and of his legacy to later generations of scholars.

    LSQ 44: 4 275 LSQ 44: 4 276 Foreword The seventeenth century is a black hole in Lutheran church history. Often the student of Lutheranism leaps from the time of Martin Luther and the Book of Concord to Spener and the beginning of Pietism. The implication is that there is nothing of value in the intervening period. Yet when one reads Pieper’s or Hoenecke’s dogmatics and Walther’s Pastoral Theology or Church and Ministry he fi nds a voluminous number of quotes from men who lived in the seventeenth century. Our Synodical Conference fathers certainly found value in the theology of the seventeenth century and the articles in this Quarterly are encouraging the same in our present age. The sermon by Dr. Thomas Kuster of Bethany Lutheran College and Seminary encourages us to trace our Christian roots from St. Paul’s missionary journeys through the Reformation to the settlement of the Midwest. This sermon is based on 2 Timothy 1: 5-10. The most important theologian of the seventeenth century was Johann Gerhard (1582-1637). After Luther and Chemnitz he is the foremost theologian of the Lutheran church. The essay Gerhard—Theologian and Pastor is an introduction to the life and work of this great seventeenth century dogmatician. This paper was presented September 2003 in Leipzig, Germany, at the fi ftieth anniversary of the Lutherisches Theologisches Seminar. It has been said that Gerhard was third in the series of Lutheran theologians and after him there was no fourth. If one were to speak of a fourth, the position would be assigned either to Abraham Calov (1612-1686) or Johann Quenstedt (1617-1688).

In order to obtain this overview, I (1.) briefly introduce the University of Helmstedt in its specificity, focusing on the chairs of mathematics. (2.) I consider in detail who the professors were who held the chairs of mathematics, what their education, scientific activity, publications and teaching were, and who the scholars were with whom they collaborated. Finally, (3.) I provide an outline of the academic network of Helmstedt mathematicians. This case study is part of a wider project on the mathematical research and teaching in early modern German universities and on the (national and international) networks of mathematicians (or scholars of disciplines related to mathematics, like cosmology, physics and natural philosophy).     Post-Reformation Trends Towards Ecumenicity Howard F. Shipps* The Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century was not intended to be a divisive force within the community of Christians. Its real aim was to purify rather than to divide. The most repre sentative leaders of the movement repeatedly demonstrated their desire for unity within the church universal. As John T. McNeill has recently affirmed, The Reformation was a revolt, not against the principle of unity and catholicity, but against the privileged and oppressive monarch of Rome� an uprising not merely of national, but of catholic feeling, against what had become a localized and overcentralized imperialism in Chris tianity, which made true catholicity impossible.^ Luther asserted his belief in "one Holy Catholic Church" when he formulated his Larger Catechism and described the nature of such a church as follows: I believe that there is upon earth a holy congregation and communion of pure saints ruled under one Head, Christ, called together by the Holy Spirit in one faith, in the same mind and understanding, furnished with multiple gifts yet one in love and in all respects harmonious, without sects or schisms.'^ Likewise as late as 1530, during the constitution of the Augs burg Confession which was being formulated by Luther and Melanc- thon, one clearly sees the irenic spirit which breathed within this theological instrument. It was marked by a continuing desire for reconciliation with Rome. Its tone was moderate, and it sought to find a common source of truth in the fathers and the Scriptures which might prove acceptable to Rome as well as the followers of Luther.
