However, evidence to the contrary suggests that judicial astrology not only continued but actually expanded during the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. During this time period, judicial astrologers accomplished this by appropriating contemporary science and mathematics. -

Existing research focuses on Calixtus‘ contributions to religious and theological debates, particularly in regard to his role in the Syncretistic Controversy of the latter half of the seventeenth century, and in regard to his unique position as a Lutheran who aspired to reunion between the different Christian confessions. This thesis problematises this focus on Calixtus by theologians and ecclesiastical historians, and argues that the genesis and transmission of his ideas cannot be fully appreciated without considering his relationship with the broader intellectual milieu of early modern Europe. It does this by exploring Calixtus‘ interaction with the humanist tradition, in particular by reconsidering his relationship with Isaac Casaubon (1559–1614), and by exploring his work in light of intellectual movements that were taking place outside the Christian church. In so doing, this thesis argues that Calixtus made contributions to early modern thought that have been overlooked in the existing literature. It also becomes apparent that much research remains to be done to gain a more accurate picture of his place in the early modern intellectual landscape, and of his legacy to later generations of scholars. -

Mellon Collection 1937.1.60 ENTRY This rural landscape scene has long been esteemed as one of Hobbema’s finest paintings. In 1890 Michel described it as one of the artist’s most remarkable works and Bode, in the translation of his 1910 catalog, termed it “a masterpiece with which few can compare.”[1] Its distinguished provenance dates back to the end of the eighteenth century. From its earliest appearance in the literature, it formed a pendant to Hobbema’s famous painting of a watermill, now in the Louvre [fig. 1].[2] The two works were separated at the Nieuwenhuys sale in 1833. As in other instances where pendant relationships in Hobbema’s work seems to exist, no irrefutable proof exists that these works were originally intended to be hung together, although compositional and stylistic similarities reinforce the historical evidence. In both paintings the focus of the composition is the sunlit farm buildings in the middle ground. The shaded large trees that occupy the foreground have long, flowing trunks surmounted by an open structure of branches and foliage. Their dark brownish green tones act as a foil to the yellow glow of the sunlit distance. Above all, the vertical formats of the paintings, rare among Hobbema’s works, argue for the hypothesis that they were pendants. -

MAX-PLANCK-INSTITUT FÜR WISSENSCHAFTSGESCHICHTE Max Planck Institute for the History of Science 2011 PREPRINT 417 Pietro Daniel Omodeo Sixteenth Century Professors of Mathematics at the German University of Helmstedt A Case Study on Renaissance Scholarly Work and Networks SIXTEENTH CENTURY PROFESSORS OF MATHEMATICS AT THE GERMAN UNIVERSITY OF HELMSTEDT A Case Study on Renaissance Scholarly Work and Networks Pietro Daniel Omodeo This paper investigates the research activity and the teaching of the professors of mathematics at the University of Helmstedt in the sixteenth century as well as their academic collaboration in Germany and abroad.1 It moreover aims to evaluate the meaning of their work and networks for the development of early modern science, in particular astronomy. In order to obtain this overview, I (1.) briefly introduce the University of Helmstedt in its specificity, focusing on the chairs of mathematics. (2.) I consider in detail who the professors were who held the chairs of mathematics, what their education, scientific activity, publications and teaching were, and who the scholars were with whom they collaborated. Finally, (3.) I provide an outline of the academic network of Helmstedt mathematicians. This case study is part of a wider project on the mathematical research and teaching in early modern German universities and on the (national and international) networks of mathematicians (or scholars of disciplines related to mathematics, like cosmology, physics and natural philosophy). A preliminary note on the sources of this overview Documents concerning professors at the University of Helmstedt are preserved in the archive Niedersächsisches Staatsarchiv Wolfenbüttel under the signature 37 Alt. The syllabus in natural philosophy and mathematics was radically changed in the course of the sixteenth century with new subjects, textbooks and methods introduced. Education became more practical and less dependent on medieval antecedents. Printing technology improved textbooks and made it possible to replace them with newer versions. Following sweeping syllabus reform around 1500, the Cambridge Master of Arts course was heavily slanted towards humanism. The old scholastic textbooks were rejected and replaced with modern authors. The purpose of natural philosophy was explicitly to illuminate the providential work of the creator, especially through natural history (a newly developing subject in the sixteenth century thanks to newly translated and promulgated Greek texts) where examples of God’s work were there for all to see. Oxford remained wedded to scholastic texts although the trivium was reformed along humanistic lines. Cromwell’s visitors in 1535 outlawed scholasticism by decree but gave little indication of the alternative (their white list stipulating only Aristotle). The solution adopted by the Oxford masters was to import the Cambridge syllabus and textbooks wholesale. When the evangelical regime of Edward VI reformed the universities in 1549, the humanist natural philosophy syllabus was adjudged appropriate, especially those parts promoted by Philip Melanchthon at the University of Wittenberg. -

Post-Reformation Trends Towards Ecumenicity Howard F. Shipps* The Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century was not intended to be a divisive force within the community of Christians. Its real aim was to purify rather than to divide. The most repre sentative leaders of the movement repeatedly demonstrated their desire for unity within the church universal. As John T. McNeill has recently affirmed, The Reformation was a revolt, not against the principle of unity and catholicity, but against the privileged and oppressive monarch of Rome� an uprising not merely of national, but of catholic feeling, against what had become a localized and overcentralized imperialism in Chris tianity, which made true catholicity impossible.^ Luther asserted his belief in "one Holy Catholic Church" when he formulated his Larger Catechism and described the nature of such a church as follows: I believe that there is upon earth a holy congregation and communion of pure saints ruled under one Head, Christ, called together by the Holy Spirit in one faith, in the same mind and understanding, furnished with multiple gifts yet one in love and in all respects harmonious, without sects or schisms.'^ Likewise as late as 1530, during the constitution of the Augs burg Confession which was being formulated by Luther and Melanc- thon, one clearly sees the irenic spirit which breathed within this theological instrument. It was marked by a continuing desire for reconciliation with Rome. Its tone was moderate, and it sought to find a common source of truth in the fathers and the Scriptures which might prove acceptable to Rome as well as the followers of Luther. -

This is an interview with Joseph D. O’Connell, Jr. Let’s start at the beginning. When and where were you born? O’CONNELL: I was born in Washington, DC, on November 15, 1943, in the old Georgetown Hospital, which later became the building where Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service was housed.
