This question may be broken down into specific inquiries, such as: 1) How is honor filtered through sentiment? 2) How did eighteenth-century ilustrados use theater to attempt to resolve the conflict between using violence to defend one’s honor and the Enlightenment ideal of avoiding excess? and 3) How did honor affect the private citizen and his relationship to the state in plays? During the eighteenth century, the age of sensibility rewrote the duel, transforming it from a ritual connected with the aristocracy into an act tied to individual, often middle-class lives. This project begins with an early play by José de Cañizares, Por acrisolar su honor (1711) and then examines sentimental comedies published and performed toward the end of the century: Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos’ El delincuente honrado (1773), Luciano Francisco Comella’s La Jacoba (1789), Antonio Valladares de Sotomayor’s El vinatero de Madrid (1784) and Gaspar Zavala y Zamora’s El amante generoso (1791). Sentimental comedies use sensibility to focus on individuals’ honor conflicts. An analysis of the representation of dueling offers a glimpse of the complex intermingling of multiple definitions of Spanish culture, where neither a lone enlightened model nor an identity based primarily on Spain’s Baroque past prevails. While sentimental comedies present conclusions that ostensibly exalt honor as virtue and rely on a belief in humanity’s goodness to resolve their conflicts, their representations of dueling point to a tense coexistence of multiple definitions of Spanish identity in the eighteenth century. Virtue is never enough to override the accusation that someone is a coward for not accepting a dueling challenge. The inclusion of extra elements that cater to social prejudices of the time also undermines the notion of honor-as-virtue. The contradictions revealed by sympathetic representations of dueling may point to the failure of sensibility as a cohesive model for resolving dramatic conflicts in a society with such diverse definitions of honor and citizenship.     The “Perfidious Invasion” of 1808: Ideological Disquiet and Certainty in Moratín Jesús Pérez-Magallón McGill University Leandro Fernández de Moratín’s political profile was drawn by Luis Sánchez Agesta in his article, “Moratín and the Political Thought of Enlightened Despotism.” In this article, which is more interested in showing that the famous playwright was in favor of enlightened despotism than in exploring and analyzing Moratín’s political thinking, Sánchez Agesta links Moratín with enlightened despotism in at least three ways: First, by way of Moratín’s participation in governmental politics related to theatrical reform; second, by recalling Moratín’s friendship and intellectual rapport with some of the most representative figures of enlightened despotism; and third, “through the ideas that become clear in his correspondence and in the precepts of his Discurso preliminar ” (573). Sánchez Agesta summarizes Moratín’s ideas as follows: “the reform of customs, the law and the entire order of a society based on traditional principles in order to rebuild it on the basis of utility. Two instruments of reform that oppose the revolutionary spirit are mentioned: the actions of an enlightened government, and the soft, continuous pressure of education” (373). Beyond this brief summary, Sanchez Agesta alludes to what he calls “the pedagogical themes of Moratín’s theater.” In short, the playwright is presented as one more among many of those who shared and supported the tenets of enlightened despotism from within the specific sphere of culture; in this case from within the world of the theater. Although Sánchez Agesta adds that Moratín’s “exact place is not among the afrancesados , but rather among the men of letters of enlightened despotism’s second phase, who were supported by Manuel Godoy,” his opinion is but a complement to the label of afrancesado or collaborationist that Moratín has carried since the War of Independence.

Spanish Identity: Nation, Myth, and History Abstract In the last two centuries, conservatives and liberals have offered two mutually exclusive visions of Spanish history, each with distinct myths, symbols, and heroes. The conservative image, formed in the Middle Ages, was based on the myth of the Reconquest and the need to restore (or keep) the homogeneity of a country characterized by its Christian religion and Latin culture. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, faced with Napoleon’s invasion, Spanish liberals understood the danger of associating their modern ideas with France and invented a progressive and democratic Spanish tradition. According to their interpretation, the most authentic Spain was not the one identified with the Reconquest and the Empire, but the Spain of all those who had been excluded from the nation-building process because of their religion or ideas: the tolerant al-Andalus Muslims, the freedom-fighter comuneros and the defenders of the democratic medieval fueros.

Trexler: La cuestión de honor en las dos versiones de El alcalde de Zalamea (Under the direction of Dr. Carmen Hsu) The following article explores how the Golden Age dramatists, Félix Lope de Vega Carpio and Pedro Calderón de la Barca defined the term “honor” in their versions of El alcalde de Zalamea and how that definition differentiates from the medieval concept of the term. Both authors arrive at a new definition of honor through the comedies’ protagonist Pedro Crespo and according to both authors, honor is no longer a quality that only the nobility can possess.
