[vii] Preface The present work is a revision and enlargement of my “Systematic Theology,” first published in 1886. Of the original work there have been printed seven editions, each edition embodying successive corrections and supposed improvements. During the twenty years which have intervened since its first publication I have accumulated much new material, which I now offer to the reader. My philosophical and critical point of view meantime has also somewhat changed. While I still hold to the old doctrines, I interpret them differently and expound them more clearly, because I seem to myself to have reached a fundamental truth which throws new light upon them all. This truth I have tried to set forth in my book entitled “Christ in Creation,” and to that book I refer the reader for further information. That Christ is the one and only Revealer of God, in nature, in humanity, in history, in science, in Scripture, is in my judgment the key to theology. This view implies a monistic and idealistic conception of the world, together with an evolutionary idea as to its origin and progress. But it is the very antidote to pantheism, in that it recognizes evolution as only the method of the transcendent and personal Christ, who fills all in all, and who makes the universe teleological and moral from its centre to its circumference and from its beginning until now. Neither evolution nor the higher criticism has any terrors to one who regards them as parts of Christ's creating and educating process. The Christ in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge himself furnishes all the needed safeguards and limitations. It is only because Christ has been forgotten that nature and law have been personified, that history has been [viii] regarded as unpurposed development, that Judaism has been 4 Systematic Theology (Volume 1 of 3) referred to a merely human origin, that Paul has been thought to have switched the church off from its proper track even before it had gotten fairly started on its course, that superstition and illusion have come to seem the only foundation for the sacrifices of the martyrs and the triumphs of modern missions. I believe in no such irrational and atheistic evolution as this. I believe rather in him in whom all things consist, who is with his people even to the end of the world, and who has promised to lead them into all the truth. Philosophy and science are good servants of Christ, but they are poor guides when they rule out the Son of God. As I reach my seventieth year and write these words on my birthday, I am thankful for that personal experience of union with Christ which has enabled me to see in science and philosophy the teaching of my Lord. But this same personal experience has made me even more alive to Christ's teaching in Scripture, has made me recognize in Paul and John a truth profounder than that disclosed by any secular writers, truth with regard to sin and atonement for sin, that satisfies the deepest wants of my nature and that is self-evidencing and divine. I am distressed by some common theological tendencies of our time, because I believe them to be false to both science and religion. How men who have ever felt themselves to be lost sinners and who have once received pardon from their crucified Lord and Savior can thereafter seek to pare down his attributes, deny his deity and atonement, tear from his brow the crown of miracle and sovereignty, relegate him to the place of a merely moral teacher who influences us only as does Socrates by words spoken across a stretch of ages, passes my comprehension. Here is my test of orthodoxy: Do we pray to Jesus? Do we call upon the name of Christ, as did Stephen and all the early church? Is [ix] he our living Lord, omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent? Is he divine only in the sense in which we are divine, or is he the only-begotten Son, God manifest in the flesh, in whom is all the Preface 5 fulness of the Godhead bodily? What think ye of the Christ? is still the critical question, and none are entitled to the name of Christian who, in the face of the evidence he has furnished us, cannot answer the question aright.

  • The Nature of Atonement in the Theology of Jacobus Arminius
JETS 53/4 (December 2010) 773–85 THE NATURE OF ATONEMENT IN THE THEOLOGY OF JACOBUS ARMINIUS j. matthew pinson* Jacobus Arminius is one of the best known and least studied theologians in the history of Christianity. His writings have been neglected by Calvinists and Arminians alike. Calvinists have disliked him because of his opposition to scholastic predestinarian theology. Most Arminians have neglected him because what little they have read of him reminds them more of Calvinism than they like. Arminius scholar Carl Bangs is correct when he says that most modern treatments of Arminius assume a definition of Arminianism that does not come from Arminius. Bangs states that most interpreters of Arminianism begin with a preconception of what Arminius should be expected to say, then look in his published works, and do not find exactly what they are looking for. They show impatience and disappointment with his Calvinism, and shift the inquiry into some later period when Arminianism turns out to be what they are looking for—a non-Calvinistic, synergistic, and perhaps semi-Pelagian system.1 This is the approach many scholars have taken toward Arminius regard- ing his doctrine of atonement. For example, the Calvinist scholar Robert L. Reymond has said that the Arminian theory of atonement is the governmental theory, which “denies that Christ’s death was intended to pay the penalty for sin.” He claims that the governmental theory’s “germinal teachings are in Arminius.”2 Similarly, well-known Wesleyan-Arminian scholar James K. Grider states: “A spillover from Calvinism into Arminianism has occurred in recent decades.

  • When You're a Homeowner, Like I Once Was, Home Is the Center from Which
When you’re a homeowner, like I once was, home is the center from which you navigate absolutely everything. But when you lose that stability, you may, along with millions of other people in this country, wind up in a place that is actually not a place at all, which is the crux of the problem: what you need is a home and where you are is actually a list—a long, seemingly unending list for low-income housing. In Salt Lake City, where I live and work, my name was put on three different kinds of housing lists: public, private, and nonprofit. But I still needed four walls and a roof over my head each night. That common need is a powerful equalizer, I learned, as I met others on such lists. Without the stability of our own places to identify as home, we live in an almost invisible undercurrent of indefinite time and space. Some of the people I interviewed for this story crashed in the homes of friends and family. A few found someone willing to rent them a room for less than market rates. Others stayed in crowded homeless shelters or lived on the streets. I have done it all. In this hazy twilight, with no hefty rental agreements or sizeable security deposits, you live wherever you can afford to live. Some of the people I interviewed for this story crashed in the homes of friends and family. A few found someone willing to rent them a room for less than market rates. Others stayed in crowded homeless shelters or lived on the streets.

PRINTEn BY ALFRED MARTIEN, PHir.APEI.PHlA. tv Srom i^ &t6targ of (J0equeaf0eb fig ^tm fo t^ feiBrarg of (Princeton C^cofo^icaf ^eminarj? Br PREFACE Dr. Hodge's method of teaching theology to the students in the Theological Seminary at Princeton is by manu- script lectures, which he reads to the successive classes. The questions printed in this volume are his own ques- tions upon his own lectures, and furnish a general but not an exhaustive view of the course of study pursued in his department. They have been arranged for publica- tion, (by authority of the Senior Class,) and appropriate headings added to them, in such a manner as to indicate to the eye the analysis of the subject, by one of the stu- dents, with Dr. Hodge's consent, but without his super- vision or revision. Whatever of defect there may be in the arrangement is due to the compiler. At present Dr. Hodge is engaged in rewriting his entire course of lectures, and has progressed as far as the subject of Original Sin. Up to this point, the questions are upon the new course.

TAZEE Adopted 2020 WILSON Adopted 2015 Perhaps you know the joy of arriving home to a wagging tail and sloppy kisses, to purrs and cuddles from an animal who loves you unconditionally. Even if you don’t own an animal, you know the comfort and joy they can bring to people’s lives. But you’ve also seen that not all animals are as lucky in finding their forever homes. Cats, dogs and other small animals in Regina find themselves homeless, abused, hungry and abandoned. That’s where the Regina Humane Society comes into the story. For more than 55 years, we’ve provided a caring and loving place for animals. But our ability to continue caring for animals is in serious jeopardy, and we desperately need your help. Despite doing our best, animals are losing their lives every day because our current Shelter is unable to meet the needs of the community. It’s literally falling down around us, spreading disease, and creating immense stress for both our animals and our people. Our animals need and deserve a new home, and they need your compassionate support to make it happen. ORACLE Adopted 2017 1 2 FROM THE Dear Donor, You’ve never met me, but I’m full of gratitude for what you’ve made happen for my students. The interest in Edward Thomas’s poetry and prose writings has grown considerably over the past few years, and this is an opportune moment to make the whole checklist freely available and accessible. The intention of the list is to provide those with an interest in Thomas with the tools to understand his enormous contribution to criticism as well as poetry. This is very much a work in progress.
