Seeking to establish the coherence and utility of the paradoxical language characteristic of the received christological tradition (e.g. the impassible Word became passible flesh and suffered impassibly), it argues that the doctrine of divine apatheia illuminates the apocalyptic and soteriological dimension of the incarnate Son’s passible life more effectively than recent reactions against it. The first chapter explores the Christology of Cyril of Alexandria and the meaning and place of apatheia within it. In light of the christological tradition which Cyril epitomized, the second chapter engages contemporary critiques and re-appropriations of impassibility, focusing on the particular contributions of Jürgen Moltmann, Robert W. RECTO RUNNING HEAD 1111 2 3 4 5111 THEOPHILUS OF 6 7 ALEXANDRIA 8 9 10111 11 2 3 If Theophilus of Alexandria seems a minor figure to us today, it is 4 because we persist in seeing him through the eyes of hostile con- 5 temporary witnesses, each of whom had his own reasons for dimin- 6 ishing Theophilus’ stature. In fact, he was one of the greatest bishops 7 of the Theodosian era, who played an important role in a crucial phase 8 of the Roman Empire’s transformation into a Christian society. 9 Norman Russell’s new assessment of Theophilus shows him as 20111 an able theologian, an expert ecclesiastical lawyer, a highly skilled 1 orator and, surprisingly, a spiritual teacher. The introductory section 2 examines his efforts to Christianize an Egypt still dominated by its 3 great temples, and his battles to maintain the pre-eminence of the 4 Alexandrian Church in an age of rapid change. The texts, most of 5 them translated into a modern language for the first time, reveal the 6 full power and range of his thinking. 7 Theophilus of Alexandria brings back into focus a figure who has 8 been long neglected in the study of early Christianity and will 9 provide students and lecturers with a fresh perspective, not least 30111 through the translation of texts, for the first time, into English. 1 2 Norman Russell was educated at the Universities of London and 3 Oxford. Why was Syriac Christianity not an imperial Church? Why did it not enter into a relationship with the authorities? This can be explained by pointing to the political situation of that community. I think that one of the reasons was bad experiences from the time of Chosroes II. The Story of Chosroes II The life of Chosroes II Parviz is a story of rise and fall. Although Chosroes II became later a symbol of the power of Persia and its ancient independence, he encountered numerous difficulties from the very moment he ascended the throne. Chosroes II took power in circumstances that today remain obscure – as it was frequently the case at the Persian court – and was raised to the throne by a coup. The rebel was inspired by an attempt of his father, Hormizd IV, to oust one of the generals, Bahram Cobin, which provoked a powerful reaction among the Persian aristocracy. The question concerning Chosroes II’s involvement in the conspiracy still remains unanswered; however, Chosroes II was raised to the throne by the same magnates who had rebelled against his father. Soon after, Hormizd IV died in prison in ambiguous circumstances. The Arabic historian, al-Tabari, claimed that Chosroes was oblivious of the rebellion. However, al-Tabari works were written several centuries later, at a time when the legend of the shah was already deeply rooted in the consciousness of the people. -

MALATY 1 SCHOOL OF ANTIOCH SCHOOL OF ANTIOCH AND THE CONTEMPORARY CHURCH I hope in the Lord that I give a brief idea concerning the concept of “school” in the Early Church, the main Christian schools appeared in the East and the West, the characteristics of the Antiochene School, and the Fathers of the Antiochene School. Here, I mention to the importance of these schools, especially the Alexandrian and the Antiochene Schools. 1. The early Fathers of the Alexandrian School present to us how we deal with science and philosophy and to witness to our Gospel among the well-educated people. 2. The later Fathers of the same school present to us how we defend our faith, especially against the heretics in a soteriological attitude, or in pastoral goal. In other words, our defense for faith is not aim in itself, but it is for the spiritual of the believers, and for gaining ever the heretics and their followers. 3. The moderate Fathers of the Antiochene School present to us a living image of the importance of the historico-grammatical interpretation of the holy Scripture. We cannot ignore the differences between the two schools, but I hope that this book explains the need of the contemporary Church to the attitudes of the two schools together, under the guidance of the power to witness to the Gospel in all circumstances and explain the word of God in its deep spiritual meanings without ignoring the historical and grammatical meanings. -

Artículos de investigación | Research Articles 55 2018 vol. 1, n°. 2 pp: 55-67 doi: 10.28970/hh.2018.2.a3 PELAGIANISM AS NOVELTY IN AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO Pelagianismo como una novedad en Agustín de Hipona Giulio Malavasi1 ABSTRACT Augustine fought against the Pelagians for almost two decades, from 411 to his death in 430, when he left unfinished his last work against Julian of Aeclanum. During this long period, Augustine countered the Pelagian movement mainly through theological treatises and sermons. In this paper, these sources will be studied from a rhetorical perspective: in particular, the several passages in which Augustine labels the Pelagian movement as a novelty, a rhetorical technique that offers Augustine several possibility of attacking the Pelagians, will be carefully analysed. This specific rhetorical tactic against the Pelagian serves at least three purposes. First, Augustine clearly identifies the true Catholic community rooted in the ancient tradition of faith with his own teaching. Second, Augustine definitely discredits his enemies of being completely outside the ancient tradition of the Church because they represent a novelty with- out any connection with the true and ancient faith. Third, Augustine spreads among his audience the doctrine of original sin, which is, at least in Augustine’s view, in perfect agreement with the tradition of the Church. All these issues will be explored in this paper. The Universality of the Church of the East: How Persian was Persian Christianity? Christopher Buck Persian Christianity was perhaps the first great non-Roman form of Christianity. The “Church of the East” was ecclesiastically “Persian” in that it was, with minor exceptions, the officially recognized Church of the Sasanian empire. The Church was politically “Persian” due to the role of Sasanian kings in the eleven Synods from 410 to 775 C.E. The Church was geographically “Persian” in that it was coextensive with, but not limited to the orbit of the Sasanian empire. The Church of the East was only secondarily “Persian” in terms of ethnicity. Yet the presence of eth- nic Persians vividly illustrates why the Church of the East became the world’s most successful missionary church until modern times. Although the majority of Christians in the church are assumed to have been ethnic Syrians, the Church of the East was once a universal, multi-ethnic religion. As a witness to the universality of the Church of the East in its heyday, it is probably the case that ethnic Persians formed the most visible and important ethnic minority of Christianity in Persia. This study will argue that the role of Iranian converts may have been far more significant than has so far been realized. Discoveries of Nestorian texts in Iranian languages (Middle Persian, Sogdian, New Persian) have proven conclusively that Syriac was not the exclusive language of liturgy and instruction in the Persian Church. In fact, part and parcel of the ex- traordinary missionary success of the Church of the East derived from its genius for adapting Christian worship to local vernaculars. -

NOTES A NEW STUDY OF THEODORE OF MOPSUESTIA M. Robert Devreesse has devoted himself for many years to the study of Theodore of Mopsuestia, and his devotion has borne fruit in a number of published texts and periodical articles. The bishop of Mopsuestia is a mys terious and intriguing figure. Highly esteemed by his contemporaries, he was condemned as a heretic 125 years after his death. His works, as those of a heretic, have mostly perished; and he has borne the reputation, for 1400 years, of the father of Nestorianism, the patron of Pelagianism, and the first rationalist interpreter of the Bible. Must we conclude, Devreesse asks, that his contemporaries had lost all Christian sense? To solve the problem, there has been nothing but fragments of his works, the Acts of the Fifth Ecumenical Council, and the judgments, intensely partisan one way or the other, of his defenders and attackers. Devreesse does not offer the present work as a definitive study,1 but rather as a recapitulation of the work done by himself and others in recent years. The question he asks here is: Did Theodore sustain the errors at tributed to him? And how did the balance of opinion finally turn and remain fixed against him? Recent discoveries of the works of Theodore, in the study of which Devreesse has been prominent, have cast new light on the problem; of special importance are Theodore's commentary on the Gospel of St. John, his catechetical homilies, and extensive fragments of his commentaries on the Psalms and on Genesis. Kervan – International Journal of Afro-Asiatic Studies n. 24/2 (2020) Yazdandukht and Mar Qardagh From the Persian martyr acts in Syriac to Sureth poetry on YouTube, via a historical novel in Arabic Alessandro Mengozzi Videos posted on YouTube show how stories of East-Syriac saints have found their way to a popular web platform, where they are re-told combining traditional genres with a culturally hybrid visual representation. The sketchy female characters Yazdandukht and Yazdui/Christine and the fully developed epos of Mar Qardagh, who belong to the narrative cycle of the Persian martyrs of Erbil and Kirkuk, inspired an Arabic illustrated historical novel, published in 1934 by the Chaldean bishop Sulaymān Ṣā’igh. A few years after the publication of the novel, a new cult of Mar Qardagh was established in Alqosh, in northern Iraq, including the building of a shrine, the painting of an icon, public and private rites, and the composition of hymns. In 1969 the Chaldean priest Yoḥannan Cholagh adapted Ṣā’igh’s Arabic novel to a traditional long stanzaic poem in the Aramaic dialect of Alqosh. The poem On Yazdandukht, as chanted by the poet himself, became the soundtrack of a video published on YouTube in 2014.
