Theophilus of Alexandria RECTO RUNNING HEAD 1111 2 3 4 5111 THEOPHILUS OF 6 7 ALEXANDRIA 8 9 10111 11 2 3 If Theophilus of Alexandria seems a minor figure to us today, it is 4 because we persist in seeing him through the eyes of hostile con- 5 temporary witnesses, each of whom had his own reasons for dimin- 6 ishing Theophilus’ stature. In fact, he was one of the greatest bishops 7 of the Theodosian era, who played an important role in a crucial phase 8 of the Roman Empire’s transformation into a Christian society. 9 Norman Russell’s new assessment of Theophilus shows him as 20111 an able theologian, an expert ecclesiastical lawyer, a highly skilled 1 orator and, surprisingly, a spiritual teacher. The introductory section 2 examines his efforts to Christianize an Egypt still dominated by its 3 great temples, and his battles to maintain the pre-eminence of the 4 Alexandrian Church in an age of rapid change. The texts, most of 5 them translated into a modern language for the first time, reveal the 6 full power and range of his thinking. 7 Theophilus of Alexandria brings back into focus a figure who has 8 been long neglected in the study of early Christianity and will 9 provide students and lecturers with a fresh perspective, not least 30111 through the translation of texts, for the first time, into English. 1 2 Norman Russell was educated at the Universities of London and 3 Oxford. The least admired of 4 the great bishops of Alexandria who dominated the ecclesiastical life 5 of the Eastern Empire from Athanasius’ succession in 328 to Cyril’s 6 death in 444, he is remembered chiefly for his destruction of the 7 Serapeum, his persecution of the Origenists and his role in the 8 downfall of John Chrysostom. His modern biographer, Agostino 9 Favale, laments his ‘deplorable violence’, but such violence must be 20111 seen in context, both historically and textually. Historically, it is 1 unreasonable to expect a bishop of the Theodosian empire to have 2 behaved diffidently. If he had done, he would not have kept his 3 throne for long. Textually, the violent ecclesiastical ruler presented 4 in contemporary writings must be deconstructed to arrive at a 5 perception of the reality underlying the rhetorical image. So far as 6 the Church of Alexandria was concerned, Theophilus was a great 7 pastor and decisive leader of his community, which is how the Copts 8 still remember him. 9 The purpose of this book is to present a varied selection of 30111 Theophilus’ writings, most of which have not previously been trans- 1 lated into English, so that his true stature can be appreciated. These 2 include some little-known homilies and legal rulings as well as his 3 anti-Origenist Festal Letters of 401–4. 4 The work could not have been completed without the generous 5 help of several friends and colleagues. The present article aims to examine which of those links, specifically by land or sea, facilitated a more rapid and conve- nient communication between the capital city and the more or less distant regions of the Empire, as exemplified by the various places of exile connected with the deposed bishops of Constantinople. Assuming that one of the key goals of sending someone into banishment would be to prevent them, as much as possible, from having any form of communication with the City, the location of the places to which they had been confined by the order of the authorities could indicate which method of contact would have potentially made it easier, or more difficult, for an exiled bishop to communicate with his followers at the capital1. In the early Byzantine period, the office of the Bishop of Constantinople was not a very secure position. Considering the time frame from the consecration of the City until the end of the sixth century, as many as 11 metropolitan bish- ops, in effect every third one, had been deposed from their office.

    ABSTRACT The Apostolic Tradition in the Ecclesiastical Histories of Socrates, Sozomen, and Theodoret Scott A. Rushing, Ph.D. Mentor: Daniel H. Williams, Ph.D. This dissertation analyzes the transposition of the apostolic tradition in the fifth-century ecclesiastical histories of Socrates, Sozomen, and Theodoret. In the early patristic era, the apostolic tradition was defined as the transmission of the apostles’ teachings through the forms of Scripture, the rule of faith, and episcopal succession. Early Christians, e.g., Irenaeus, Tertullian, and Origen, believed that these channels preserved the original apostolic doctrines, and that the Church had faithfully handed them to successive generations. The Greek historians located the quintessence of the apostolic tradition through these traditional channels. However, the content of the tradition became transposed as a result of three historical movements during the fourth century: (1) Constantine inaugurated an era of Christian emperors, (2) the Council of Nicaea promulgated a creed in 325 A.D., and (3) monasticism emerged as a counter-cultural movement. Due to the confluence of these sweeping historical developments, the historians assumed the Nicene creed, the monastics, and Christian emperors into their taxonomy of the apostolic tradition. For reasons that crystallize long after Nicaea, the historians concluded that pro-Nicene theology epitomized the apostolic message. They accepted the introduction of new vocabulary, e.g. homoousios, as the standard of orthodoxy. In addition, the historians commended the pro- Nicene monastics and emperors as orthodox exemplars responsible for defending the apostolic tradition against the attacks of heretical enemies. Seeking to establish the coherence and utility of the paradoxical language characteristic of the received christological tradition (e.g. the impassible Word became passible flesh and suffered impassibly), it argues that the doctrine of divine apatheia illuminates the apocalyptic and soteriological dimension of the incarnate Son’s passible life more effectively than recent reactions against it. The first chapter explores the Christology of Cyril of Alexandria and the meaning and place of apatheia within it. The interpreter is not a scholar dissociated from real life: on the contrary, he is in constant dialogue with a wider spectrum of inter- locutors, from the farmer to the royal household. Here, I mention to the importance of these schools, especially the Alexandrian and the Antiochene Schools. 1. The early Fathers of the Alexandrian School present to us how we deal with science and philosophy and to witness to our Gospel among the well-educated people. 2. The later Fathers of the same school present to us how we defend our faith, especially against the heretics in a soteriological attitude, or in pastoral goal. In other words, our defense for faith is not aim in itself, but it is for the spiritual of the believers, and for gaining ever the heretics and their followers. 3. The moderate Fathers of the Antiochene School present to us a living image of the importance of the historico-grammatical interpretation of the holy Scripture. We cannot ignore the differences between the two schools, but I hope that this book explains the need of the contemporary Church to the attitudes of the two schools together, under the guidance of the power to witness to the Gospel in all circumstances and explain the word of God in its deep spiritual meanings without ignoring the historical and grammatical meanings.

Origen1 Abstract: The portrayal of Origen the Alexandrian represents a conundrum for the Byzantine tradition. The allegorical tendencies in his writings were exaggerated by some of his admirers, leading to a repudiation of his person and works by such prominent fgures as St Epiphanius of Salamis, St Jerome and Theophilus of Alexandria. These repudiations anticipated his condemnation as a heretic by the emperor Justinian and the ffth ecumenical council. Paradoxically, Origen’s condemnation by the Byzantine establishment was inconsistent with the views of those saints, venerated by the same establishment, who considered him a holy person, including Sts Pamphilus and Gregory Thaumaturgus. These two representations, both negative and positive, will be explored below for the purpose of demonstrating that the former portrayal is far too often emphasised at the expense of the latter, which, it is made clear, deserves much more attention.

    Chapter Three Early Christianity in North Africa Kenneth Sawyer & Y ouhana Youssef INTRODUCTION In 1866, Edward Wilmot Blyden visited Egypt. As he gazed at the pyramids, a stirring feeling overwhelmed him about the achievements of his ancestors. He decided on a vocation to urge the descendants of these creative Africans to retake their fame. Was Blyden's hope only a romantic dream? Egypt has continued to loom large in African quest for identity. The story of Christianity in North Africa is part of a golden period of African cultural prominence in the world stage, including the role of Africans in the formation of Christianity as it emerged from the Jesus movement, a sect within Judaism. The story of Christianity is linked to but distinct from the peoples and cultures that surround it. While Egyptians, for instance, considered themselves to be living at the very center of the world, and while they were quite adept at defining themselves over against outsiders, they also proved adept at adapting, absorbing, and resisting other cultures. Those historians who have sought to study northern Africa apart from its geographical and cultural context, those who promote the virtual excision of Egypt from Africa, have greatly distorted its history by describing it in isolation from its intercultural and international contacts. The study of Egypt somehow segregated from Nubian, Libyan, Semitic, Hellenic and Asian influence has greatly distorted the rich interactive complexities of Egyptian civilization, reflecting and reinforcing a most unhelpful segmentation of studies, as if Egyptologists, Africanists, Classicists and Semiticists were incapable of a shared subject or a common perspective.
