Artículos de investigación | Research Articles 55 2018 vol. 1, n°. 2 pp: 55-67 doi: 10.28970/hh.2018.2.a3 PELAGIANISM AS NOVELTY IN AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO Pelagianismo como una novedad en Agustín de Hipona Giulio Malavasi1 ABSTRACT Augustine fought against the Pelagians for almost two decades, from 411 to his death in 430, when he left unfinished his last work against Julian of Aeclanum. During this long period, Augustine countered the Pelagian movement mainly through theological treatises and sermons. In this paper, these sources will be studied from a rhetorical perspective: in particular, the several passages in which Augustine labels the Pelagian movement as a novelty, a rhetorical technique that offers Augustine several possibility of attacking the Pelagians, will be carefully analysed. This specific rhetorical tactic against the Pelagian serves at least three purposes. First, Augustine clearly identifies the true Catholic community rooted in the ancient tradition of faith with his own teaching. Second, Augustine definitely discredits his enemies of being completely outside the ancient tradition of the Church because they represent a novelty with- out any connection with the true and ancient faith. Third, Augustine spreads among his audience the doctrine of original sin, which is, at least in Augustine’s view, in perfect agreement with the tradition of the Church. All these issues will be explored in this paper. NOTES A NEW STUDY OF THEODORE OF MOPSUESTIA M. Robert Devreesse has devoted himself for many years to the study of Theodore of Mopsuestia, and his devotion has borne fruit in a number of published texts and periodical articles. The bishop of Mopsuestia is a mys terious and intriguing figure. Highly esteemed by his contemporaries, he was condemned as a heretic 125 years after his death. His works, as those of a heretic, have mostly perished; and he has borne the reputation, for 1400 years, of the father of Nestorianism, the patron of Pelagianism, and the first rationalist interpreter of the Bible. Must we conclude, Devreesse asks, that his contemporaries had lost all Christian sense? To solve the problem, there has been nothing but fragments of his works, the Acts of the Fifth Ecumenical Council, and the judgments, intensely partisan one way or the other, of his defenders and attackers. Devreesse does not offer the present work as a definitive study,1 but rather as a recapitulation of the work done by himself and others in recent years. The question he asks here is: Did Theodore sustain the errors at tributed to him? And how did the balance of opinion finally turn and remain fixed against him? Recent discoveries of the works of Theodore, in the study of which Devreesse has been prominent, have cast new light on the problem; of special importance are Theodore's commentary on the Gospel of St. John, his catechetical homilies, and extensive fragments of his commentaries on the Psalms and on Genesis. This source is an English manual of brief excerpts from the Fathers arranged in historical sequence. It is a staple reference work useful for locating passages from the Fathers on particular points of doctrine. -

Marquette University, 2012 The Christological opus of Theodoret of Cyrrhus remains somewhat controversial due to his involvement in the Nestorian and Monophysite controversies as the champion of the Antiochene milieu. Although the recent scholarship is increasingly benevolent in the considerations of his Christology, still certain doubts are present about the constancy of his teaching. In this dissertation, I argue that the Christology of Theodoret of Cyrrhus remains consistent and unchanged throughout his life. The analysis of both his early and mature Christological output, as evidenced in the Expositio rectae fidei and the Eranistes, shows that the main theological concepts and terminology remain unaffected by the many years of fierce theological debates. Theodoret’s Christology is constructed around the key concept of sharp distinction between the uncreated and created orders of existence, to which the divine and human natures of Christ respectively belong. -

Augustine in the Byzantine World to 1453 Introduction The fundamental studies on the tradition of Aug. in the Byzantine Church remain those by Rackl (1924) and Altaner (1952), the first still useful for the manuscript sources, the second for its detailed analysis of the dogmatic florilegia (now indexed in ACO). Rackl’s enthusiasm for Byzantine interest in Aug. as ‘a friend of the East’ contrasts with Altaner’s conclusion that there was a fundamental lack of knowledge of Aug. in the Greek Church. The reasons for the scarcity of references to Aug. in the early Byzantine sources have been explored by Nichols (1987) from the perspective of church politics, while Lössl (2001) suggests that the very success of Aug. as a western theologian placed him on the Greeks’ blacklist until an unexpected revival in the thirteenth century. As Altaner predicted, little addition can be made to the number of Greek translations listed by him. Nevertheless the weight of evidence is appreciable in establishing Aug. as a patristic authority in the view of the Greek Church. Where evidence does not firmly support a possible wider knowledge of Aug.’s works, blanket scepticism need not be the definitive position. A deeper investigation of Byzantine biblical exegesis, and the history of Latin manuscripts at Constantinople, are avenues that may be fruitfully explored in seeking Aug.’s elusive imprint in the East. Aug.’s reputation, established through the sixth- to eighth-century councils, secured the return to his works by the Greek scholars Maximos Planudes (c.1280–1305), and the brothers Demetrios (c.1324–1397/8) and Prochoros Kydones (c.1333–1369/70?). -

Nestorius was enthroned as archbishop on April 10 th 428. The contemporary historian Socrates Scholasticus called Nestorius a proud and ignorant man whose innate and undisputed oratorical power masked a weakness of incisive thought. Nestorius argued that Theotokos did not do justice to the fact that, strictly speaking, Mary was not the mother of God but rather the mother of the man whom Christian faith recognizes as divine and thus calls God. On the other hand, the term Anthropotokos acknowledges that Mary is the mother of this man but can itself be taken to suggest that he is merely a man, which again is offensive to orthodox Christian faith in the deity of Christ. In Cyril’s letters against to Nestorius, Cyril not only defends the title Theotokos against accusations that it was reviving the heresy of Apollinarianism, but he denies the very legitimacy of using alternative Christological schemes as such as the “association of personas” the Antiochian thinkers had spoken of. -

V. Sellers, Aloys Grillmeier, 1 Adolf Harnack, Friedrich Loofs, Paul Tillich, Lionel Wickham and others. While we may acknowledge their depth of research, it must be pointed out that these men have concentrated almost exclusively on Cyril's great polemic and dogmatic documents. -

“The Voice So Dear to Me” Themes From Romans in Theodore, Chrysostom, and Theodoret George Kalantzis Wheaton College 501 College Avenue • Wheaton, IL 60187 • [email protected] SBL Romans Through History and Cultures Seminar (Boston, Nov 22, 2008) Abstract This paper examines the reception and use of the Epistle to the Romans in fourth and fifth century Antiochene tradition, focusing on the writings of Theodore of Mopsuestia, John Chrysostom, and Theodoret of Cyrus. Particular attention is paid to the twin loci of Greek patristic ambivalence with the concept of predestination (especially as that finds expression in the Augustinian traditions), namely, “this body of sin” in 6:6-8 and the concept of προαίρεσις, the free choice between good and evil as an innate property of human nature. “As I keep hearing the Epistles of the blessed Paul read, and that twice every week, and often three or four times … gladly do I enjoy the spiritual trumpet, and get roused and warmed with desire at recognizing the voice so dear to me (τὴν ἐμοὶ φίλην ἐπιγινώσκων φωνήν), and seem to fancy him all but present to my sight, and behold him conversing with me.”1 This is how John Chrysostom opens the ὑπόθεσις of his homilies on the Epistle to the Romans. He was not alone; all the Antiochenes of the fourth and fifth century, including his dear friend Theodore of Mopsuestia and their student and theological heir, Theodoret of Cyrus, loved the apostle Paul deeply and spent much of their respective careers commenting, preaching, and teaching from the Pauline corpus. -
