From Sacred Travel to Monastic Career: The Evidence of Late Antique Syriac Hagiography di Brouria Bitton-Ashkelony In one of the dramatic moments in the conversion of Rabbula – a prominent figure in the Church of Edessa in the first half of the fifth century – Acacius bishop of Aleppo and Eusebius bishop of Edessa led him to the monastery of Marcian and Abraham, two local holy recluses belonging to the Syriac ecclesiastical landscape1. There Rabbula declared his desire to convert to Christianity and to shut himself away, like them. But before entering this new way of life he expressed one desire: To go to Jerusalem and see the holy place and be baptized in the Jordan where Christ was baptized as a model for us2. Rabbula then «entered Jerusalem, prayed in front of Golgotha…, entered the tomb of the Lord and the cave where he was born, and went up to the place of the Ascension… From there he went down to the Jordan; at once he petitioned the priests and recited before them the creed, and they anointed him and baptized him»3. As soon as he was baptized he went back to his city, where he assumed a social position, and appeared as the patron of the poor4. Later on he launched his episcopate career and served as the bishop of Edessa in 411-412 and again in 435- 436, emerging as an opponent of Nestorius and supporter of Cyril of Alexandria. This account narrated in the Life of Rabbula, composed around 440, close to the hero’s own time, offers an intriguing close-up of the social and intellectual elite’s conversion against the background of Edessa’s Hellenic culture at the end of the fourth century and beginning of the fifth5. -

Practicing Love of God in Medieval Jerusalem, Gaul and Saxony
he collection of essays presented in “Devotional Cross-Roads: Practicing Love of God in Medieval Gaul, Jerusalem, and Saxony” investigates test case witnesses of TChristian devotion and patronage from Late Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages, set in and between the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, as well as Gaul and the regions north of the Alps. Devotional practice and love of God refer to people – mostly from the lay and religious elite –, ideas, copies of texts, images, and material objects, such as relics and reliquaries. The wide geographic borders and time span are used here to illustrate a broad picture composed around questions of worship, identity, reli- gious affiliation and gender. Among the diversity of cases, the studies presented in this volume exemplify recurring themes, which occupied the Christian believer, such as the veneration of the Cross, translation of architecture, pilgrimage and patronage, emergence of iconography and devotional patterns. Artículos de investigación | Research Articles 55 2018 vol. 1, n°. 2 pp: 55-67 doi: 10.28970/hh.2018.2.a3 PELAGIANISM AS NOVELTY IN AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO Pelagianismo como una novedad en Agustín de Hipona Giulio Malavasi1 ABSTRACT Augustine fought against the Pelagians for almost two decades, from 411 to his death in 430, when he left unfinished his last work against Julian of Aeclanum. During this long period, Augustine countered the Pelagian movement mainly through theological treatises and sermons. In this paper, these sources will be studied from a rhetorical perspective: in particular, the several passages in which Augustine labels the Pelagian movement as a novelty, a rhetorical technique that offers Augustine several possibility of attacking the Pelagians, will be carefully analysed. This specific rhetorical tactic against the Pelagian serves at least three purposes. First, Augustine clearly identifies the true Catholic community rooted in the ancient tradition of faith with his own teaching. Second, Augustine definitely discredits his enemies of being completely outside the ancient tradition of the Church because they represent a novelty with- out any connection with the true and ancient faith. Third, Augustine spreads among his audience the doctrine of original sin, which is, at least in Augustine’s view, in perfect agreement with the tradition of the Church. All these issues will be explored in this paper. International Journal of the Classical Tradition https://doi.org/10.1007/s12138-019-00551-1 ARTICLE A Public Debate on Cyril of Alexandria’s Views on the Procession of the Holy Spirit in Seventeenth‑Century Constantinople: the Jesuit Reaction to Nicodemos Metaxas’s Greek Editions Nil Palabıyık1 © The Author(s) 2020 On a September afternoon in 1627, crowds gathered at the library of the Jesuit resi- dence in Constantinople to witness a lively public discussion between two repre- sentatives of the Roman Catholic Church concerning Cyril of Alexandria’s views on the procession of the Holy Spirit.1 It is interesting to see that a ffth-century church father’s writings in the context of a dispute dating back to the sixth century were still considered politically relevant, socially infuential and theologically compelling in seventeenth-century Constantinople. The primary aim of this rather ostentatious gathering was to adopt and promote a diferent (according to Eastern Christians an ‘erroneous’) viewpoint on Cyril of Alexandria’s writings on the procession of the Holy Spirit, and thereby to present a counter-argument to that of the Eastern Church. The Jesuit dispute ultimately targeted the theological stance and the reputation of Cyril Lucaris (1572–1638), the ecumenical patriarch of Constantinople and the of- cial head of the populous Greek Orthodox millet of the Ottoman Empire. 1 Cyril of Alexandria’s opinion on this question is still controversial, but lies beyond the scope of this article. CYRIL OF ALEXANDRIA'S FIRST EPISCOPAL YEARS A. Davids• Cyril and Nestorius Not very much is known about Cyril of Alexandria (ca. 378-444), founder of classical Christology, prior to 428, in which year Nestorius, Archbishop of Constantinople, became his rival in Christological matters. In particular, the Councils of Ephesus (431) and Chalcedon (451) are linked with his name. Later, Cyril's theo logical views were honoured by the Councils of Constantinople in 553 and 680-81. When Nestorius' ideas about Christ as both God and man reached Egypt, they were soon disputed by the desert monks. Cyril was urged to act and, in the spring of 429, wrote a long letter "to the priests and deacons, to the fathers among the monks and to those leading a solitary life" in Egypt. 1 In this letter he pointed out that the anti-Arian formula of faith of the Council of Nicaea (325) implied that Mary was to be called "Mother of God" (OEOTOKoc;), a term which Nestorius had refused to use. Instead, he insisted on calling Mary "Mother of Christ" (Xpt<ITOTOl<oc;). In this, Cyril saw a revival of Arianism, which he had been attacking since about 423-25.2 Cyril's arguments are mainly drawn from the anti-Arian works of Athanasius (295-373), his predecessor at the See of Alexandria, who had most strongly opposed Arianism in the fourth century. Cyril's first anti-Nestorian reaction was directed at the churches and monasteries within the boundaries of his own ecclesiastical terri tory and was moderate: Nestorius is not even mentioned by name. -

NOTES A NEW STUDY OF THEODORE OF MOPSUESTIA M. Robert Devreesse has devoted himself for many years to the study of Theodore of Mopsuestia, and his devotion has borne fruit in a number of published texts and periodical articles. The bishop of Mopsuestia is a mys terious and intriguing figure. Highly esteemed by his contemporaries, he was condemned as a heretic 125 years after his death. His works, as those of a heretic, have mostly perished; and he has borne the reputation, for 1400 years, of the father of Nestorianism, the patron of Pelagianism, and the first rationalist interpreter of the Bible. Must we conclude, Devreesse asks, that his contemporaries had lost all Christian sense? To solve the problem, there has been nothing but fragments of his works, the Acts of the Fifth Ecumenical Council, and the judgments, intensely partisan one way or the other, of his defenders and attackers. Devreesse does not offer the present work as a definitive study,1 but rather as a recapitulation of the work done by himself and others in recent years. The question he asks here is: Did Theodore sustain the errors at tributed to him? And how did the balance of opinion finally turn and remain fixed against him? Recent discoveries of the works of Theodore, in the study of which Devreesse has been prominent, have cast new light on the problem; of special importance are Theodore's commentary on the Gospel of St. John, his catechetical homilies, and extensive fragments of his commentaries on the Psalms and on Genesis. This book was preceded in 1946 by the article of E.
