Ancient Church History Semi-Pelagianism, Semi-Augustinianism, and the Synod of Orange (529) Pastor Charles R. Biggs Review of Pelagius and Augustine/ Council of Ephesus (431) Pelagius was a British monk, a very zealous preacher who was castrated for the sake of the kingdom and given to rigorous asceticism. He desired to live a life of perfect holiness. In Christian history, he has come to be the arch-heretic of the church, but in his early writings he was very orthodox and sought to maintain and uphold the creeds of the early church. Pelagius came from Rome to Carthage in the year 410 AD (after Alaric I had captured Rome) with his friend and student Celestius. He taught the people of North Africa a new emphasis on morals and the rigorous life of living the Gospel, because he was shocked by the low tone of Roman morals and thought that Augustine’s teaching on divine grace contributed to the immorality. Celestius, who was the most prominent follower of Pelagius at the time, was condemned at the Council of Carthage in 411 because he denied the transmission of Adam’s sins to his descendants. Augustine began to write and preach again Pelagius and Celestius’ doctrines. Pelagius and Celestius were condemned at two councils at Carthage and Milevis (Numidia, North Africa) in 416 and Innocent I (410-17) excommunicated them from the church. On May 1, 418 the Council of Carthage convened to issue a series of nine canons affirming without compromise the Augustinian doctrine of the Fall and Original Sin. Emperor Honorius (395-423) issued an imperial decree denouncing the teachings of Pelagius and Celestius in that same year. -

This dissertation examines his writings on virginity in the interest of illuminating the historical and social contexts of his teachings. Considering Ambrose’s treatises on virginity as literary productions with social, political, and theological functions in Milanese society, I look at the various ways in which the bishop of Milan formulated ascetic discourse in response to the needs and expectations of his audience. Furthermore, I attend to the various discontinuities in Ambrose’s ascetic writings in the hope of illuminating what kinds of ideological work these texts were intended to perform by the bishop within Milanese society and beyond. -

The monk had argued from Scriptural evidence that married women were equal in merit with widows and virgins; that they who had been baptised in fullness of faith could not be overthrown by the devil; that eating meats and drinking wine with thanksgiving was no less meritorious than abstention from these things; and that there was one reward in the kingdom of heaven for all those who had kept their baptismal vow. This paper is a reconstruction of Jovinian's arguments and motives from the evidence of Jerome's Against Jovinian. -

NOTES A NEW STUDY OF THEODORE OF MOPSUESTIA M. Robert Devreesse has devoted himself for many years to the study of Theodore of Mopsuestia, and his devotion has borne fruit in a number of published texts and periodical articles. The bishop of Mopsuestia is a mys terious and intriguing figure. Highly esteemed by his contemporaries, he was condemned as a heretic 125 years after his death. His works, as those of a heretic, have mostly perished; and he has borne the reputation, for 1400 years, of the father of Nestorianism, the patron of Pelagianism, and the first rationalist interpreter of the Bible. Must we conclude, Devreesse asks, that his contemporaries had lost all Christian sense? To solve the problem, there has been nothing but fragments of his works, the Acts of the Fifth Ecumenical Council, and the judgments, intensely partisan one way or the other, of his defenders and attackers. Devreesse does not offer the present work as a definitive study,1 but rather as a recapitulation of the work done by himself and others in recent years. The question he asks here is: Did Theodore sustain the errors at tributed to him? And how did the balance of opinion finally turn and remain fixed against him? Recent discoveries of the works of Theodore, in the study of which Devreesse has been prominent, have cast new light on the problem; of special importance are Theodore's commentary on the Gospel of St. John, his catechetical homilies, and extensive fragments of his commentaries on the Psalms and on Genesis. The Yoke of Liberty: St. Augustine and the Freedom of the Person Chase Padusniak ‘15 Throughout his life, St. Augustine’s beliefs about the human will changed. Although in his Christian years he always held human liberty in the utmost regard, his conflict with Pelagius and his followers led the saint to formulate a doctrine of predestination. While Augustine himself seems to have believed that such disparate views could be reconciled, Christian movements throughout history have continued to contest which aspect of God to emphasize: His generosity in giving man liberty or His power in preordaining events. Despite these disagreements and their incumbent heatedness, Augustine’s belief in God as the giver of all gifts and blessings grounds both positions. Because of this, this debate becomes a fruitful moment in which contemplate the divine nature of all knowledge. And so, in this paper, I will argue that even if Augustine’s different views cannot be brought into complete harmony, their very dissonance presents itself as a cause for meditation on Augustine’s general conceptions of freedom and God’s wisdom. Although St. Augustine expressed the conflicting notions that the human will is free and that our fate is predestined, his thought can give us an insight into our ultimate reliance on God. Central to the theologian’s understanding is the freedom of the will.1 Adam was free to either sin or not sin in the Garden of Eden: “Adam possessed a grace such as we have to free us from evil. Without any inner struggle, without temptation from within, and without trouble.”2 And so, his decision to turn away from the almighty can only be ascribed to “his free choice, for God had given him everything needed to enable him to avoid it.”3 The human will is free precisely because the first human’s will was free. -

Hunter, Marriage, Celibacy, and Heresy in Ancient Christianity: The Jovinianist Controversy (Oxford Early Christian Studies), Oxford: OUP, 2009; xx+316 pp.; ISBN 978-0-19-956553-5; ₤ 26 (pb). The hardcover edition of this book, published in 2007, was not reviewed in this journal. Now that there is a paperback edition, it seemed useful to draw the readers’ attention to it. This is a thoroughly researched and well- written book, probably the best work there is on the Jovinianist contro- versy. At the end of the fourth century, the monk Jovinian sparked an immense theological controversy by his teaching that married and celibate Christians are equal in God’s sight. His work is lost, but it can be recon- structed on the basis of the works of those who combated him, mainly pope Siricius, bishop Ambrose, and especially the ever cantankerous Jerome, who launched an utterly vicious and unfair counterattack in his Adversus Jovinianum. This reconstruction is carried out very carefully and convincingly in the first chapter of Hunter’s book. In it he emphasizes that the essential element in Jovinian’s teaching is his conviction that there is only one reward in heaven for all those who have been born again in bap- tism and have kept their faith. Asceticism, however impressive it may be, does not change the basis fact that all true believers are of the same merit before God. In a fascinating second chapter, H. shows how fiercely debated matters of marriage and celibacy were in late fourth-century Rome (where Jovinian lived), not only between pagans and Christians, but also between ascetic Christians and their Christian opponents, especially the more well-to-do aristocratic Christians in Rome who often had sympathy for Jovinian’s view. -

ABSTRACT Toward a Protestant Theology of Celibacy: Protestant Thought in Dialogue with John Paul II’s Theology of the Body Russell Joseph Hobbs, M.A., D.Min. Mentor: Ralph C. Wood, Ph.D. This dissertation examines the theology of celibacy found both in John Paul II’s writings and in current Protestant theology, with the aim of developing a framework and legitimation for a richer Protestant theology of celibacy. Chapter 1 introduces the thesis. Chapter 2 reviews the Protestant literature on celibacy under two headings: first, major treatments from the Protestant era, including those by Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Wesley, various Shakers, and authors from the English Reformation; second, treatments from 1950 to the present. The chapter reveals that modern Protestants have done little theological work on celibacy. Self-help literature for singles is common and often insightful, but it is rarely theological. Chapter 3 synthesizes the best contemporary Protestant thinking on celibacy under two headings: first, major treatments by Karl Barth, Max Thurian, and Stanley Grenz; second, major Protestant themes in the theology of celibacy. The fourth chapter describes the foundation of John Paul II’s theology of human sexuality and includes an overview of his life and education, an evaluation of Max Scheler’s influence, and a review of Karol Wojtyla’s Love and Responsibility and The Acting Person . Chapter 5 treats two topics. First, it describes John Paul II’s, Theology of the Body , and more particularly the section entitled “Virginity for the Sake of the Kingdom.” There he examines Jesus’ instruction in Matt 19:11-12, celibacy as vocation, the superiority of celibacy to marriage, celibacy as redemption of the body, Paul’s instructions in 1 Cor 7, and virginity as human destiny. -

The related question of whether Paul was ever married is not addressed here, although that issue has been of interest since at least the second century AD and perhaps earlier. Instead, these authors consider only the question of whether a specific noun that is sometimes used to refer to a wife was inten- tionally used that way by Paul. A handy popular introduction which includes a selection of short primary source texts in English translation. Benedict XVI, Pope. Church Fathers: From Clement of Rome to Augustine. General Audiences 7 March 2007-27 February 2008. San Francisco: Ignatius, 2008. ---. Church Fathers and Teachers: From Saint Leo the Great to Peter Lombard. General Audiences 5 March 2008-25 June 2008, 11 February 2009-17 June 2009, 2 September 2009-30 December 2009. San Francisco, Ignatius, 2010. These two books are the best succinct introduction to the Fathers. They are written from an informed scholarly perspective, but they make the individual authors come alive in a very readable way. Jurgens, William A. The Faith of the Early Fathers. 3 vols. Collegeville, MN: Liturgical Press, 1970. This source is an English manual of brief excerpts from the Fathers arranged in historical sequence. It is a staple reference work useful for locating passages from the Fathers on particular points of doctrine.
