    Art Spiritual Dimensions of Ukrainian Diaspora: Collective Scientific Monograph DOI 10.36074/art-sdoud.2020.chapter-9 Nataliia Fedorniak UKRAINIAN MUSICAL FOLKLORE DISCOGRAPHY AS A PRESERVING FACTOR IN UKRAINIAN DIASPORA NATIONAL SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE ABSTRACT: The presented material studies one of the important forms of transmission of the musical folklore tradition of Ukrainians in the United States and Canada during the XX – the beginning of the XXI centuries – sound recording, which is a component of the national spiritual experience of emigrants. Founded in the 1920s, the recording industry has been actively developed and has become a form of preservation and promotion of the traditional musical culture of Ukrainians in North America. Sound recordings created an opportunity to determine the features of its main genres, the evolution of forms, that are typical for each historical period of Ukrainians’ sedimentation on the American continent, as well as to understand the specifics of the repertoire, instruments and styles of performance. Leading record companies in the United States have recorded authentic Ukrainian folklore reconstructed on their territory by rural musicians and choirs. Arranged folklore material is represented by choral and bandura recordings, to which are added a large number of records, cassettes, CDs of vocal-instrumental pop groups and soloists, where significantly and stylistically diversely recorded secondary Ukrainian folklore (folklorism). INTRODUCTION. The social and political situation in Ukraine (starting from the XIX century) caused four emigration waves of Ukrainians and led to the emergence of a new cultural phenomenon – the art and folklore of Ukrainian emigration, i.e. diaspora culture. Having found themselves in difficult ambiguous conditions, where there was no favorable living environment, Ukrainian musical folklore began to lose its original identity and underwent assimilation processes.

Headlining the show were singer/song- writer Vika Vasilevych of Ukraine and vir- tuoso violinist Vasyl Popadiuk, originally from Ukraine and now of Canada, with their respective bands. Also on the bill were the always popular Roma Pryma Bohachevsky Dance Workshop and the Dunai Dancers of Edmonton, Alberta, new- comers to the festival. Each group of dancers presented its unique version of the “Pryvit” (Welcome) number at the start of the program – the workshop dancers resplendent in their costumes modeled on garb worn by Kozak nobility and the Dunai members in a vari- ety of folk costumes representing diverse regions of Ukraine. The regional variety was wonderfully reflected also in the Canadian troupe’s choice of music and cho- reography. Other performers included the Ukrainian Lev Khmelkovsky Christine Syzonenko Chorus Dumka of New York, the Dzvin Male Violinist Vasyl Popadiuk and singer-songwriter Vika (Vasilevich) perform during the Ukrainian Cultural Festival at Soyuzivka.

    The Kubasonics are arguably Newfoundland's finest Ukrainian band. Winners of three 2017 ​ MusicNL Awards (Group of the Year, Folk/Roots Artist of the Year, The Overcast Fan’s Choice Entertainer of the Year), their trademark sound combines top-flight musicianship spiced with quirky humour, a dizzying array of exotic traditional instruments, and an eclectic high-energy stage show. They have appeared in 9 of Canada's provinces and territories. In March 2017 they performed and recorded in Trinidad as one of only 6 acts selected from the Atlantic provinces for the Club One New Releases program. In summer 2017 they completed a three-week tour of Eastern Europe, with concerts in Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia and Romania. The Kubasonics’ newest CD “Kubfunland” takes listeners on a wild ride through a variety of musical styles and textures. The repertoire draws on a wealth of Ukrainian traditional material ranging from centuries old chants, ritual dance melodies, songs of love and troubled relationships, toe-tapping party music, and even a set of Newfoundland dance tunes. All are given a refreshingly new interpretation in the Kubasonics’ arrangements. “Kubfunland” was selected to the short list for the 2017 Borealis Music Award. The Kubasonics have been featured on national Radio and TV broadcasts, including a television documentary based on their original song "Giants of the Prairies." Their original song "Billy Mosienko" was played during the opening of Hockey Night in Canada, while other songs are included on a variety of compilations, most notably the song "Polka from Lviv" on Alberta: ​ Wild Roses and Northern Lights on the Smithsonian Folkways label.
