2017 FESTIVAL SCHEDULE 952 Green Valley Crescent, Ottawa | 1000 Byron Avenue, Ottawa Capitalukrainianfestival.Com July 2017 Dear Friends: We at Ukrainian Credit Union Limited cannot think of a more fitting and exciting way to ring in Canada’s 150th anni- versary in our Nation’s Capital than through our lead spon- sorship of the Capital Ukrainian Festival! On behalf of our 25,000 members across Ontario, congratulations to the festival’s inspired or- ganizing committee and all of its hard working volunteers for assembling another wonderful showcase of Ukrainian culture, music, arts, and cuisine that have now been invigorating Cana- da’s multicultural fabric for over 125 years! Ukrainian Credit Union Limited provides a full range of financial services to Ukrainian Canadi- ans and those who share our co-operative values. We do so via on-line and mobile channels, and through sixteen service locations including our Bank and Somerset location here in Ottawa. However, one of the most important things we do is build community and we are very proud to be part of yours! We invite one and all to enjoy the great singers, dancers, artists, and food on hand this weekend. Also, please be sure to visit the Ukrainian Credit Union Limited booth and take advantage of the convenience of our ATM. Have a great Festival Chief Executive Officer Ukrainian Credit Union Limited 271 Bank Street Ottawa ON K2P 1X5’ tel: 613 288-0206 (co-located with Alterna Credit Union) www.ukrainiancu.com Welcome! Вітаємо! Bienvenue! Get ready to celebrate Canada 150 at the Capital Ukrainian Fes- tival! The 3-day event will entertain visitors of all ages and in- terests -- from enjoying a wide selection of Ukrainian cuisine to being entertained by spectacular performances. And it doesn’t end there. Choirs will be performing Ukrainian and sacred mu- sic in the Church. The ever-popular workshops and demonstra- tions on embroidery, weaving and egg painting (pysanky), ritu- al breads, and icon painting will again be returning by popular photo credit: Nina Matinjanin Photography demand. And let’s not forget about the children who will have the opportunity to learn about the Ukrainian culture by creating their own souvenir at our Children’s Activity Centre. Still not enough? How about enjoying our after-hours party, “Korchma”. The Capital Ukrainian Festival is especially excited to be part of the many events celebrating Cana- da’s 150th anniversary. There couldn’t be a better time to reflect on the contributions, history and culture of Ukrainian Canadians as well as ponder on what the future could hold. Ukrainian cultural expression has, however, been allowed to flourish and grow for the past century in an environment that welcomes and celebrates differences. We believe that the Capital Ukrainian Festival, in the spirit of promoting this “belonging”, is the perfect venue to foster greater community, dialogue and legacy-building among all Canadians. For this reason, we have again invited other communities to participate in the Festival. Given the success of their inclusion in last year’s Festival, we are proud that they have chosen our Festival to showcase their culture. This is only our 3rd year in existence. Yet the spectacular response from visitors indicates that there is a hunger to know more about Ukrainian Canadians as well as other ethnic communities. As you can imagine, putting on such an extensive Festival requires an army of volunteers. Without these selfless individuals, who give hundreds of hours of free labour, this event could not have taken place. I am grateful to my “festival family” for their conviction, skills, knowledge, patience, perseverance and kindness. You are inspiration to all Canadians. Thank you, Дякую, Merci to all who continue to make the Capital Ukrainian Festival a resounding success. Art Spiritual Dimensions of Ukrainian Diaspora: Collective Scientific Monograph DOI 10.36074/art-sdoud.2020.chapter-9 Nataliia Fedorniak UKRAINIAN MUSICAL FOLKLORE DISCOGRAPHY AS A PRESERVING FACTOR IN UKRAINIAN DIASPORA NATIONAL SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE ABSTRACT: The presented material studies one of the important forms of transmission of the musical folklore tradition of Ukrainians in the United States and Canada during the XX – the beginning of the XXI centuries – sound recording, which is a component of the national spiritual experience of emigrants. Founded in the 1920s, the recording industry has been actively developed and has become a form of preservation and promotion of the traditional musical culture of Ukrainians in North America. Sound recordings created an opportunity to determine the features of its main genres, the evolution of forms, that are typical for each historical period of Ukrainians’ sedimentation on the American continent, as well as to understand the specifics of the repertoire, instruments and styles of performance. Leading record companies in the United States have recorded authentic Ukrainian folklore reconstructed on their territory by rural musicians and choirs. Arranged folklore material is represented by choral and bandura recordings, to which are added a large number of records, cassettes, CDs of vocal-instrumental pop groups and soloists, where significantly and stylistically diversely recorded secondary Ukrainian folklore (folklorism). INTRODUCTION. The social and political situation in Ukraine (starting from the XIX century) caused four emigration waves of Ukrainians and led to the emergence of a new cultural phenomenon – the art and folklore of Ukrainian emigration, i.e. diaspora culture. Having found themselves in difficult ambiguous conditions, where there was no favorable living environment, Ukrainian musical folklore began to lose its original identity and underwent assimilation processes.

Headlining the show were singer/song- writer Vika Vasilevych of Ukraine and vir- tuoso violinist Vasyl Popadiuk, originally from Ukraine and now of Canada, with their respective bands. Also on the bill were the always popular Roma Pryma Bohachevsky Dance Workshop and the Dunai Dancers of Edmonton, Alberta, new- comers to the festival. Each group of dancers presented its unique version of the “Pryvit” (Welcome) number at the start of the program – the workshop dancers resplendent in their costumes modeled on garb worn by Kozak nobility and the Dunai members in a vari- ety of folk costumes representing diverse regions of Ukraine. The regional variety was wonderfully reflected also in the Canadian troupe’s choice of music and cho- reography. • The KubasonicsAre Arguably Newfoundland's Finest Ukrainian
The Kubasonics are arguably Newfoundland's finest Ukrainian band. Winners of three 2017 MusicNL Awards (Group of the Year, Folk/Roots Artist of the Year, The Overcast Fan’s Choice Entertainer of the Year), their trademark sound combines top-flight musicianship spiced with quirky humour, a dizzying array of exotic traditional instruments, and an eclectic high-energy stage show. They have appeared in 9 of Canada's provinces and territories. In March 2017 they performed and recorded in Trinidad as one of only 6 acts selected from the Atlantic provinces for the Club One New Releases program. In summer 2017 they completed a three-week tour of Eastern Europe, with concerts in Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia and Romania. The Kubasonics’ newest CD “Kubfunland” takes listeners on a wild ride through a variety of musical styles and textures. The repertoire draws on a wealth of Ukrainian traditional material ranging from centuries old chants, ritual dance melodies, songs of love and troubled relationships, toe-tapping party music, and even a set of Newfoundland dance tunes. All are given a refreshingly new interpretation in the Kubasonics’ arrangements. “Kubfunland” was selected to the short list for the 2017 Borealis Music Award. The Kubasonics have been featured on national Radio and TV broadcasts, including a television documentary based on their original song "Giants of the Prairies." Their original song "Billy Mosienko" was played during the opening of Hockey Night in Canada, while other songs are included on a variety of compilations, most notably the song "Polka from Lviv" on Alberta: Wild Roses and Northern Lights on the Smithsonian Folkways label.
