PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

As President of the Ukrainian Canadian Foundation of Taras Shevchenko, I am pleased to provide this year’s Annual Report. We began our fiscal year with great excitement. We welcomed a new Executive Director, a new Chair of the Investment Committee, and Board We planned for the eighth biennial Kobzar™ Book Award – replete with a new statuette, we awarded a new Ukrainian Canadian short prose writer, and prepared to award another young artist seeking to reach for the stars. Even in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, we fulfilled our plan and achieved our goals. This past fiscal year, the Board of Directors of the Shevchenko Foundation allocated funding assistance in the amount of $455,053 to 89 projects. These range from a commission of new jazz by Canadian John Stetch, to the creation of a memorial stained-glass У минулому фіскальному році Рада Директорів Шевченківської Фундації виділила фінансову допомогу в розмірі $455,053 доларів installation in England to honour Ukrainian Canadians who served overseas during the Second World War. 89 проектам - від замовлення нової джазової музики канадським музикантом Іваном Стетч (Стечишином), до створення меморіальної вітражної інсталяції в Англії на честь українських канадців, які проходили службу за кордоном під час Другої світової війни. In March, 2020 we celebrated the 8th awarding of the Kobzar™ Book Award with the production of a new award ceremony by young professional Ukrainian Canadian talent. It was my pleasure that evening to present the winner of the 2020 Kobzar™ Book Award, Laisha Rosnau, with a new statuette, the “Kobzar”, a commissioned sculpture by Toronto artist Oleh Lesiuk. The Shevchenko Foundation emphasized the importance of inspiring young Ukrainian Canadians through the awarding of the REACH Mentorship/Residency for the Arts award, and the newly launched Emerging Writers Short Prose Competition. REACH Mentorship / Residency for the Arts, As our fiscal year came to an end March 31, 2020, the shock of the COVID-19 virus had resulted in a single-worst day of stock performance since the late 80’s, leaving its mark on our own investment portfolio. We faced the reality of having lost all the gains made in the fiscal year Коли наш фінансовий рік закінчився 31 березня 2020 року, шок від вірусу КОВІД - 19 призвів до падіння акцій до найнижчого рівня, and had to “close our books” on, at that point in time, an un-recovered market. We closed the year with an annualized rate of return of -2.4%. As I have reiterated in many Annual Reports, we are very proud of our Investment Committee. The choices made by the Shevchenko прибутковості, -2.4%. Foundation in handling its investment capital has once again proved that our investment strategy has resilience. Our First Quarter of the new fiscal year beginning April 1, 2020 resulted in our portfolio experiencing an 11% positive rate of return. This has effectively eliminated Як я не раз повторював у своїх щорічних эверненнях, ми дуже пишаємося нашим Iнвестиційним комітетом. Вибір, зроблений all the negative consequences of the March downturn and the disciplined approach of the Investment Committee following our Investment Шевченківською Фундацією щодо розподілу власного інвестиційного капіталу, ще раз довів, що наша інвестиційна стратегія вірна. Policy, coupled with our security selection and the management of our funds, leaves all of us satisfied with our current position. As previously announced, this is my last full fiscal year as President of the Shevchenko Foundation as we will complete a five-year transition As always, I wish to express heartfelt gratitude to my fellow Board members, members of our Investment Committee, and staff (especially ми завершуємо п’ятирічний перехідний план. our first-year Executive Director, Bohdana Bashuk) for their dedication and hard work in fulfilling the goals and programs of the Shevchenko Foundation. Most importantly, I extend Shevchenko Foundation’s profound gratitude to our donors, who through these challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, continue to share our vision and desire to inspire the development of Ukrainian Arts, Culture, Heritage and Community in Canada. As Ukrainian-Canadians, we are very much used to the continuous resilience of our Community in facing over a century of difficult times. I am proud that the Shevchenko Foundation will continue in its leadership role and operating through its collective strength and vision to not March 31, 2020 ASSET 2020 INVESTMENT REVIEW ALLOCATION $M FROM THE CHAIR OF THE INVESTMENT COMMITTEE David Chucko Chair, Investment Committee Cash & Fixed Income 13.1 I appreciate the opportunity to take on the role of Chair of your Investment Committee. I would like to recognize the 25 years of service that Wally Shoemay provided to both the Investment Committee, and through his stewardship, EQUITY to the Foundation’s Board of Directors. Wally and his Committee are largely responsible for building an Investment Portfolio, with a governance and investment approach that will hold the Foundation in good hands for years to come. Canada 9.1 8.3 US In this first year of my tenure as Chair, we have seen a presidential impeachment, an oil crash, a global health pandemic, and heightened levels of GEOGRAPHIC social unrest. We have seen markets hit all time highs and 10-year lows, all in a matter of weeks.

Market indices like the TSX came into the year with large weights in both the financial and energy sectors and a small weighting in technology Europe 4.4 ALLOCATION $M and health care. Most portfolios have different sector weighting than the TSX. Given market volatility, different weightings in just those four 1.7

sectors alone had a significant impact on performance. As a result, during the first few months of the new fiscal year, it is hard to rely on Asia Pacific traditional benchmarks as a fair indication of how the portfolio is doing. Emerging Markets 0.3 In reporting on our year end, the results are centred on market indices that were within days of the Dow hitting ten-year lows, with Canadian Canada 21.4 and World markets being within days of doing the same. The good news is that the Investment Committee has practiced prudence, resilience and a commitment to our investments approach – an approach that Wally Shoemay described as being a hallmark of the Investment Committee’s investment strategy. For the Shevchenko Foundation, the market has been one where “the bark has been worse that the bite”. We have maintained a balanced and US 8.3 diversified approach to our asset allocation. The Foundation’s portfolio has been underweighted in both the industry sectors and geographies that 4.5 Europe suffered the biggest losses during this period. As a result, the Foundation’s performance throughout this period and to the date of the end of the SECTOR First Quarter (June, 2020), continues to significantly outperform the benchmark indices. More importantly our portfolio is doing better than ALLOCATION $M many of the private portfolios that I have seen through the end of June. 1.9 Asia 0.8 On March 31, 2020 our portfolio was down approximately 2.4% from last March and 10% from December 31, 2019. As of June 30, 2020, the Emerging portfolio was up 11% for the First Quarter, erasing approximately 8% of the losses between December and March. The markets have continued to Pacific improve through the middle of July. Cash & Fixed Income 10.9 Markets I am grateful to the Committee Members for their continued wisdom in directing the investment strategy for the Foundation. I would also like to welcome Nataliya Stasyuk, Marc Marzotto and Chris Chernecki to the Investment Committee. They will bring new ideas and experience which will provide a stronger foundation for Industrials 4.8 our Committee. 4.7 Financials
