As a component of the newly established Shevchenko Foundation Future Leaders Fund, the Shevchenko Foundation and Mitacs, a national not-for-profit research and training organization, in June 2017 announced a new partnership that will allow Ukrainian undergraduate student interns to participate in research projects at Canadian universities.

Through the generous support of the Myhal Family Foundation this new program allows Canadian Mitacs CEO and Scientific Director Alejandro Adem (L) and Shevchenko Foundation President Andrew Hladyshevsky, Q.C. faculty and universities to benefit from the international perspectives and expertise of Ukrainian signing the partnership agreement. student interns. The partnership with Mitacs dovetails with the Shevchenko Foundation youth initiative and will serve to strengthen the Foundation’s links to Canadian academia in areas such as the sciences, not usually associated with Ukrainian Canadian studies.

The deadline for Ukrainian student candidates to apply for the Mitacs Globalink program was September 2017. A similar schedule for Canadian university faculty wishing to host interns took place at the same time. By early 2018 Mitacs had selected and matched interns and faculty with similar research interests.

Shevchenko Foundation is anticipating that close to 50 top-ranked students from Ukraine will participate in this 12-week research internship under the supervision of Canadian university faculty at post secondary institutions located across the country. Students are provided with professional skills (From L to R) Rayla Myhal, Dr. Cristina Amon, Dean of Engineering (University of Toronto), and George Myhal, C.M. training and gain valuable knowledge about at the launch of the partnership agreement between the Shevchenko Foundation and Mitacs. For the past 17 years Mitacs has designed and delivered research and training programs in Canada, working with 60 Canadian universities, private firms and governments to build partnerships that support industrial and social innovation in Canada.

The Shevchenko Foundation acknowledges the financial generosity of the Myhal Family Foundation, the Western NIS Enterprise Fund and the support of the Ministry of Education of Ukraine in making this project possible.
