HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 2001-4654, by Representatives McMorris, Sump, Cairnes, B. Chandler, Roach, Casada, Skinner, Hunt, Ahern, Esser, Marine, Pearson, Ericksen and Conway WHEREAS, The U.S.S. Washington, a battleship citizen of the state of Washington, was officially launched on June 1, 1940, and was formally commissioned on May 15, 1941, with Captain Howard H.J. Benson in command; and WHEREAS, The U.S.S. Washington, while serving for four months in early 1942 with the British Home Fleet at Flagship Task Force 39, escorted convoys to Murmansk and Archangel, Russia; and WHEREAS, The U.S.S. Washington served in numerous bombardments, battles, and air strikes, including the Bombardment of Nauru, the Battles for Leyte Gulf, and the Air Strikes on Kyushu; and WHEREAS, The U.S.S. Washington served a total of thirty-eight months in combat zones, damaged three enemy cruisers and a destroyer, sank a battleship, a destroyer, and an oil tanker, and shot down twelve enemy planes, bombarded ten enemy islands, and repelled fifty-three air attacks; and WHEREAS, The U.S.S. Washington won a classic ship-to-ship duel with the Japanese Battleship Kirishima and sunk Destroyer Ayanami on November 14-15, 1942, becoming the first U.S. battleship to fight an enemy destroyer and the only one to ever singly destroy one; and WHEREAS, The U.S.S. Washington, while being the only U.S. battleship in the Pacific, patrolled enemy waters for five weeks alone, set a record steaming 31,494 miles in seventy-nine straight days, steamed 289,609 miles in World War II alone, fueled destroyers fifty-nine times, was fueled sixteen times itself, and sank more combat tonnage than any other U.S. -

It is a difficult duty for governments, which need national support to weave the components of seapower into a national engine for the sake of developing seapower in defence of national interests. It can be said that alliance strategy can exert a strong influence on a state. In the Japan context, there are a lot of benefits and risks brought by an alliance. For sea powers, it may be no exaggeration to say that whether to contribute to maritime-oriented coalitions as a member nation seriously influences the fate of the nation. -

Strategic Situation - Allied • “Germany first” policy – 70% of US resources were against Germany, only 30% against Japan. • US did not have land, sea or air parity with Japan but was getting close to it. • US needed to support Australia because they were in danger and because Australia provided a bulwark against Japan in the Pacific. • Coast watchers in the Solomon Islands provided early notice of Japanese sea and air movements. Axis Division of the World (as considered in January 1942) Strategic Situation - Japanese • Recently lost four carriers at the Battle of Midway, their first major setback of the war. • Goal was to capture the major allied base at Port Moresby in New Guinea, thereby threatening Australia. • IJN wanted to occupy Guadalcanal to interdict US delivery of troops and supplies from Hawaii to Australia. • IJA wanted to concentrate forces for Port Moresby operation. Battle for Port Moresby 1942 Kokoda Track Operational Situation - Guadalcanal • Island in the Solomon chain 90 miles long and 25 miles wide. • No natural harbors, and south coast covered by coral reefs so only approach by sea is from the north. • Topography – mountains to 8000 feet, dormant volcanos, steep ravines, deep streams, and jungle. • Public Health threats – malaria, dengue, fungal, heat injury. • British protectorate since 1893 – Natives generally expected to be friendly. -

By Sander Kingsepp. Page 2. SHOKAKU CLASS The origin of the ships names. Sho-kaku translates as 'Flying Crane'. During the Pacific War, this powerful aircraft carrier and her name became famous throughout the conflict. However, SHOKAKU was actually the third ship given this name which literally means "the crane which floats in the sky" - an appropriate name for an aircraft perhaps, but hardly for the carrier herself! Zui-kaku. In Japan, the crane ('kaku') has been regarded as a lucky bird since ancient times. 'Zui' actually means 'very lucky' or 'auspicious'. ZUIKAKU participated in all major battles except for Midway, being the most active of all IJN carriers. Page 3. 23 August 1941. A near beam photo of SHOKAKU taken at Yokosuka, two weeks after her completion on 8 August. This is one of the few pictures showing her entire length from this side, which was almost 260m.
