The document is not a comprehensive timeline of every action, policy decision, or ship movement. What is provided is a glimpse into how the 20th century’s first global conflict influenced the Navy and its evolution throughout the conflict and the immediate aftermath. The source base is predominately composed of the published records of the Navy and the primary materials gathered under the supervision of Captain Dudley Knox in the Historical Section in the Office of Naval Records and Library. A thorough chronology remains to be written on the Navy’s actions in regard to World War I. The nationality of all vessels, unless otherwise listed, is the United States. All errors and omissions are solely those of the author. National Park Service Teaching with Historic Places U.S. Department of the Interior Remembering Pearl Harbor: The USS Arizona Memorial Remembering Pearl Harbor: The USS Arizona Memorial (National Park Service Photo by Jayme Pastoric) Today the battle-scarred, submerged remains of the battleship USS Arizona rest on the silt of Pearl Harbor, just as they settled on December 7, 1941. The ship was one of many casualties from the deadly attack by the Japanese on a quiet Sunday that President Franklin Roosevelt called "a date which will live in infamy." The Arizona's burning bridge and listing mast and superstructure were photographed in the aftermath of the Japanese attack, and news of her sinking was emblazoned on the front page of newspapers across the land. The photograph symbolized the destruction of the United States Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor and the start of a war that was to take many thousands of American lives. Indelibly impressed into the national memory, the image could be recalled by most Americans when they heard the battle cry, "Remember Pearl Harbor." More than a million people visit the USS Arizona Memorial each year. They file quietly through the building and toss flower wreaths and leis into the water. They watch the iridescent slick of oil that still leaks, a drop at a time, from ruptured bunkers after more than 50 years at the bottom of the sea, and they read the names of the dead carved in marble on the Memorial's walls. Battery Lewis and the Navesink Military Reservation at Hartshorne Woods Park – Monmouth County Park System Information Sheet on Restoration & Interpretation Key to Defense of America’s Greatest Harbor With the looming threat of war in the late 1930s, the United States initiated a program to modernize and expand coastal defenses along the eastern and western seaboards. The Hartshorne property in the Navesink Highlands was deemed a desirable site due to its high elevation and location at the southern entrance to the New York harbor. In 1942 the US Government purchased 224 acres, and between 1942 and 1944 the Army constructed the Navesink Military Reservation as part of the Harbor Defenses of New York, headquartered at Fort Hancock on Sandy Hook. The objectives of the Harbor Defenses of New York were to deny enemy ships access to New York Bay, and to furnish heavy artillery support for defense against landings. Two batteries were constructed at the Navesink Military Reservation during World War II. Battery Lewis, the larger of the two, is a 600 foot long casemated battery, consisting of two 16 inch caliber gun emplacements connected by a corridor housing ammunition storage and power rooms. Battery Lewis is the only 16 inch gun battery in the State of New Jersey. Constructed of steel and thick reinforced concrete and covered with earth, and built upon the prototype developed by the Army for all 16 inch gun batteries, Battery Lewis was designed to withstand battleship and aerial attack. Two 16 inch Navy Mk11 M1 guns on M4 Army barbette carriages were mounted in Battery Lewis in May 1943. -

Mark Foreign Affairs and lational Defense Division Congressional Research Service SUMMARY ISSUE DEFINITION EACKGROUND AND ANALYSIS CHRONOLOGY FOR ADD1 TIONAL READ1NG PERSIAN GULF AND THE WAR POWERS DEBATE: ISSUE SUMMARY AND REVIEW U.S. military involvement in the Persian Gulf has prompted a new debate in Congress, and between Congress and the Administration, over the applicability of the War Powers Resolution (P.L. 93-148) to the current engagement of U.S. forces in the area. The U.S. presence has increased dramatically since the Administration's July implementation of the plan to reflag Kuwaiti tankers that were vulnerable in the tanker war between Iran and Iraq. The congressional debate over the applicability of the War Powers Resolution has been triggered by a number of events that have demonstrated the risks entailed in increasing the presence of U.S. ships and sailors in a war zone. The key events include: the Iraqi attack on the USS Stark on May 17, 1987; the commencement of U.S. reflagging on July 22, 1987; the damage to the reflagged Bridgeton from an Iranian mine on July 24, 1987; the U.S. missile firing on an Iranian F-4 on Aug. 10, 1987; the U.S. attack on Sept. 21, 1987, upon an Iranian landing ship discovered while dropping mines in the Gulf, and the Oct. 8, 1987, U.S. sinking of three Iranian patrol boats. Congress has shown its concerns about the application of the War Powers Resolution in a variety of ways. -

USS Hornet Sea, Air & Space Museum Additional Historic Information The Doolittle Raid (Hornet CV-8) Compiled and Written by Museum Historian Bob Fish AMERICA STRIKES BACK The Doolittle Raid of April 18, 1942 was the first U.S. air raid to strike the Japanese home islands during WWII. The mission is notable in that it was the only operation in which U.S. Army Air Forces bombers were launched from an aircraft carrier into combat. The raid demonstrated how vulnerable the Japanese home islands were to air attack just four months after their surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. While the damage inflicted was slight, the raid significantly boosted American morale while setting in motion a chain of Japanese military events that were disastrous for their long-term war effort. Planning & Preparation Immediately after the Pearl Harbor attack, President Roosevelt tasked senior U.S. military commanders with finding a suitable response to assuage the public outrage. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a difficult assignment. The Army Air Forces had no bases in Asia close enough to allow their bombers to attack Japan. At the same time, the Navy had no airplanes with the range and munitions capacity to do meaningful damage without risking the few ships left in the Pacific Fleet. In early January of 1942, Captain Francis Low1, a submariner on CNO Admiral Ernest King’s staff, visited Norfolk, VA to review the Navy’s newest aircraft carrier, USS Hornet CV-8. During this visit, he realized that Army medium-range bombers might be successfully launched from an aircraft carrier. -

Washington, a battleship citizen of the state of Washington, was officially launched on June 1, 1940, and was formally commissioned on May 15, 1941, with Captain Howard H.J. Benson in command; and WHEREAS, The U.S.S. Washington, while serving for four months in early 1942 with the British Home Fleet at Flagship Task Force 39, escorted convoys to Murmansk and Archangel, Russia; and WHEREAS, The U.S.S. Washington served in numerous bombardments, battles, and air strikes, including the Bombardment of Nauru, the Battles for Leyte Gulf, and the Air Strikes on Kyushu; and WHEREAS, The U.S.S.
