4 The Hawaiian Military Transformation from 1770 to 1796 In How Chiefs Became Kings, Patrick Kirch argues that the Hawaiian polities witnessed by James Cook were archaic states characterised by: the development of class stratification, land alienation from commoners and a territorial system of administrative control, a monopoly of force and endemic conquest warfare, and, most important, divine kingship legitimated by state cults with a formal priesthood.1 The previous chapter questioned the degree to which chiefly authority relied on the consent of the majority based on the belief in the sacred status of chiefs as opposed to secular coercion to enforce compliance. This chapter questions the nature of the monopoly of coercion that Kirch and most commentators ascribed to chiefs. It is argued that military competition forced changes in the composition and tactics of chiefly armies that threatened to undermine the basis of chiefly authority. Mass formations operating in drilled unison came to increasingly figure alongside individual warriors and chiefs’ martial prowess as decisive factors in battle. Gaining military advantage against chiefly rivals came at the price of increasing reliance on lesser ranked members of ones’ own communities. This altered military relationship in turn influenced political and social relations in ways that favoured rule based more on the consent and cooperation of the ruled than the threat of coercion against them for noncompliance. A major obstacle to understanding anything having to do with Ha- waiian history and culture is that most of the major histories are written by non-speakers of the Hawaiian language. Thus, all of the major English- language histories or commentaries on Hawaii are based on the writings of basically four people: Samuel Kamakau, David Malo, John Papa Ii, and Abraham Fornander, Hawaiians who spoke English. But, much of Ka- makau was unknown until parts of his writing were translated by Dr. Mary Kawena Pukui, in 1950. Much of Malo’s work still remains to be translated, as is the case with some of the Ii and Fornander materials. The real need in Hawaiian studies presently is for Hawaiian translators who understand the metaphors of the Hawaiian language of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and who also have the historian’s objectivity and re- search skills. Such a rare gem is Charles W. Kenn, who, in his seventies now, is just beginning to receive the credit and the recognition due him as a Hawaiian linguist and scholar. He has written prolifically on a number of Hawaiian subjects such as history, genealogy, sports, linguistics, music and even horticulture. In the Hawaiian community itself, Kenn is greatly admired and respected for his universal and academic perspective. He has labored long and largely unnoticed most of his life, although he is quoted often by scholars at the Bishop Museum, the Kamehameha Schools and the University of Hawaii. -

The Consequences of Eating With Men Hawaiian Women and the Challenges of Cultural Transformation By Paulina Natalia Dudzinska A thesis submitted for the Cand. Philol. Degree in History of Religions Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages University of Oslo Spring 2007 2 Summary Before 1819 Hawaiian society was ruled by a system of ritual laws called kapu. One of these, the aikapu (sacred eating), required men and women to eat separately. Because eating was ritual, some food items, symbolically associated with male deities, were forbidden to women. It was believed that women had a “haumia” (traditionally translated as “defiling”) effect on the male manifestations of the divine and were, as a consequence, barred from direct worship of male gods and work tasks such as agriculture and cooking. In Western history writing, Hawaiian women always presented a certain paradox. Although submitted to aikapu ideology, that was considered devaluing by Western historians, women were nevertheless always present in public affairs. They engaged in the same activities as men, often together with men. They practised sports, went to war and assumed public leadership roles competing with men for power. Ruling queens and other powerful chiefesses appear frequently in Hawaiian history, chants and myths. The Hawaiians did not seem to expect different behaviour of men and women, except perhaps in ritual contexts. Rank transcended any potential asymmetry of genders and sometimes the highest-ranking women were considered above the kapu system, even the aikapu. In 1819, after 40 years of contact with the foreigners, powerful Hawaiian queens decided to abolish the kapu system, including the aikapu. -

Abstract From the arrival of Polynesians before 1200 AD until Western contact in 1778, Hawaiian land use and resource distribution were centred on the “ahupuaʻa” system of watershed-based management areas that made their inhabitants nearly self-suffi cient. Those units were grouped into larger regions, each called a “moku,” led by lower chiefs who were in turn governed by the high chief or king of each island. While societal and environmental taboo or “kapu” were enforced from above, day to day neighbourhood cooperation served to protect resources, produce food, and sustain up to one million people before Western contact. Following the arrival of Europeans, land and resource management, and governance based on native Hawaiian core beliefs, were replaced by a centralised Western market economy. Modern land ownership, agency mandates and legal jurisdictions provide artifi cial walls that keep people from moving, but do not constrain invasive species, nor are they eff ective for managing public trust resources such as water or native species. Over time government and conservation organisations have come to view decentralised cooperation as a key to protecting the 50% of Hawaiian terrestrial, native habitat that persists. -

The paper addresses the politics, religion, and society that informed Fornander's research and writing, then focuses more closely on his book, An Account ofthe Polynesian Race and international response to it. Fornander's tenacity in promoting his Western worldview and his efforts to advance his career infused his writings and, in the end, served to overshadow existing indigenous language and culture, hastening deterioration ofboth. Utilizing correspondence, early writing for newspapers, and other archival information, the paper demonstrates his attempts to attain authentic status for himselfand his work. Source: OHA, 2014. 2 Executive Summary OHA received its first landholding, Pahua Heiau, in 1988. Pahua sits on a small 1.15 acre parcel of land located in southeastern O‘ahu in a residential neighbor- hood of Maunalua (which is now known as Hawai‘i Kai). This report seeks to explore the cultural and historical narratives of Pahua Heiau. It is hoped that this effort will renew a modern, collective understanding of Pahua as a wahi pana (storied place) and will guide stewardship practices within OHA. Pahua remains a vital cultural and historical resource for Native Hawaiians and the broader community. The goal of this report is to make important ‘ike ‘äina (intimate and nuanced knowledge about a place) about Pahua Heiau more readily available to the public, and will hopefully inform future decisions about the site. OHA seeks to steward Pahua in a way that fulfills OHA’s kuleana to Native Ha- waiians, honors Pahua as a wahi pana (storied, noted, legendary place), and ac- tively involves the community in care of the site. In particular, Pahua represents an important opportunity to develop and implement strategies that are rooted in traditional Native Hawaiian cultural practices and informed by Native Hawaiian epistemologies in ways that cultivate meaningful, impactful, and long–term stew- ardship. KA NUPEPA KUOKOA by Joan Hori, Hawaiian Collection Curator, Special Collections, Hamilton Library, University of Hawai'i at Manoa, 2001 produced as part of the Hawai'i Council for the Humanities funded grant "Digitization for Preservation of an Important Hawaiian Language Newspaper - Ka Nupepa Kuokoa" Ka Nupepa Kuokoa, the Hawaiian language newspaper with the longest publication history, first appeared in 1861. While published with Christian mission support and demonstrating a haole, or European-American stance, it had a long history of publishing information about Hawaiian, or Kanaka Maoli, tradition and culture. This essay briefly relates its history, its contents, and the social context in which it appeared. Terms used throughout are those found in the newspapers, and used by the native people to refer to themselves, such as Kanaka Maoli, or kanaka, and the term they used to refer to Caucasians, haole. The use of the ‘okina and kahako is determined by the method utilized by the newspapers and the sources used as references in this essay. Hawaiian language newspapers of the nineteenth and early twentieth century present to a growing audience of readers a rich source of Kanaka Maoli history and culture. Among the more than 80 titles currently available in various states of completeness and formats can be found viewpoints on religion, economics, culture, and politics of Christian missionaries; haole business and political leaders; and Kanaka Maoli scholars, leaders, and the general population. These newspapers serve as a primary source of information on issues facing Hawai’i in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Presenting a native view of historical events in Hawai’i and the world, and a Kanaka Maoli perspective on their own culture, they tell the readers of today about their concerns of a changing society. -

THE HALE NAUA SOCIETY In late 1998, the Hawaiian Historical Society and the Hawai'i Com- mittee for the Humanities undertook sponsorship of the translation of the records of the Hale Naua Society, a cultural organization founded by King Kalakaua.1 The planned focus of the translation was the material within manuscript collection M-469 at the Hawai'i State Archives, including minutes of meetings and the original constitu- tion and by-laws of the society. Manuscript Group 469 also contains speeches, membership records, reference data, notes, and records in English as well as in Hawaiian. Because the 1886 Hawaiian manu- script of the constitution and by-laws differs from English-language versions (1886 and 1890), a new translation was deemed worthwhile. In the midst of background research, an important and uncatalogued manuscript was located at the Hawaiian Mission Children's Society and added to the documents to be translated. The fifty-eight-page Buke Oihana, or ritual book, of the Hale Naua Society provides a fas- cinating glimpse of a syncretic blend of Hawaiian culture and West- ern fraternalism. The project will make the translation available to libraries, research institutions and other interested groups. These manuscripts form a vital body of primary source material relating to the first phases of the Hawaiian cultural renaissance undertaken by Kalakaua and Hawaiian nationalists. -

When I was looking into getting a graduate degree, Kanalu was the graduate student advisor. He remembered me from my undergrad years, which at that point had been nine years earlier. He was open, inviting, and supportive of any idea I tossed at him. We had several more conversations after I joined the program, and every single one left me dizzy. I felt like I had just raced through two dozen different ideas streams in the span of ten minutes, and hoped that at some point I would recognize how many things I had just learned. I told him my thesis idea, and he went above and beyond to help. He also agreed to chair my committee. I was orignally going to write about Pana Oʻahu, the stories behind places on Oʻahu. Kanalu got the Pana Oʻahu (HWST 362) class put back on the schedule for the first time in a few years, and agreed to teach it with me as his assistant. The next summer, we started mapping out a whole new course stream of classes focusing on Pana Oʻahu. But that was his last summer. -
