The process was overseen by Sinead Murray, UNICEF, Veronika Njikho, UNFPA and Mehreen Jaswal, Adolescent Girls Consultant. A very special thanks to the partners involved in the pilot phase and workshop that supported in the revisions and adaptations of toolkit resources and materials: Al Mesalla Civil Development Organisation Harikar International Medical Corps International Rescue Committee Norwegian Refugee Council Save the Children Tajdid Women’s Empowerment Organisation Women Rehabilitation Organisation 3 Introduction The Adolescent Girls Toolkit for Iraq is a collection of learning sessions and tools designed to empower adolescent girls from IDP, Refugee and Host communities in Iraq to address key issues on life skills, Reproductive Health, Gender Based Violence (GBV) and Financial Education. The curriculum has been designed to be implemented in a specific sequence to give girls the opportunity to develop complete knowledge and skills on a number of important topics. However, due to the context in Iraq, the sessions have also been designed as such, so they can be used for acute and specific interventions, which is explained in more detail later. The Toolkit will support implementing partners to set up girl friendly spaces, carry out girl focused needs assessments and plan an intervention accordingly. Each section (you will find the checklist box on the right of each section) works on a specific component of girl programming, so depending on the implementing partner capacity, you may start at the beginning of the toolkit, or further in, if you are already advanced in girl programming. Even if you aren’t able to complete all of the steps in the girl programming toolkit, simply achieving the first step (girl friendly spaces) is a good starting point from which you can build upon. 4 The Basics Age of Adolescence Adolescence is the period between the ages of 19-10 for males and females 1. It is the phase in which one moves from childhood into adulthood. During adolescence, there are a number of physical and psychological changes that take place. This can be very challenging for many adolescents, but it can also be a time of discovery and happiness where adolescents learn about their potential. Adolescence 10 – 19 2 Early Adolescence Late Adolescence 10-14 15-19 The Emergency Context In conflict situations, young people must somehow ‘cross over’ from childhood to adulthood while confronting the brutality of war. Stripped of safety and security, where caregivers do not feel capable to protect and provide for their families, young people need support and guidance, especially during this critical time in their development. They need to know whom to trust and how they can contribute in positive ways to their family, school and community life. Too often there is nowhere to turn. In the midst of conflict, humanitarian assistance has typically focused on meeting the survival needs of young children, while adolescents are overlooked 3 . Adolescent Girls in Emergencies 4 • Adolescent girls account for an increasing proportion of displaced persons. • Adolescence is a critical time—compared to their male peers and to adults, adolescent girls are less likely to have live-saving information, skills and capacities to navigate the upheaval that follows displacement. • Adolescent girls face a unique set of violence related risks, including sexual violence, harmful practices and human trafficking. • Adolescent girls are forced to assume roles and responsibilities that restrict their mobility and visibility, increasing their isolation and breaking bonds with their peers and with other social networks. 1 http://www.who.int/maternal_child_adolescent/topics/adolescence/dev/en/ 2 http://www.unicef.org/adolescence/files/SOWC_2011_Main_Report_EN_02092011.pdf 3 http://www.unicef.org/adolescence/files/adolescent_conflict.pdf 5 4 I’m Here: Adolescent Girls in Emergencies. • Black Masculinity and White-Cast Sitcoms Unraveling Stereotypes in New Girl
Black masculinity and White-cast Sitcoms Unraveling stereotypes in New Girl Marie Zafimehy Supervisor: Alma Persson, Gender Studies, LiU Master’s Programme Gender Studies – Intersectionality and Change Master’s thesis 15 ECTS credits ISRN: LIU-TEMA G/GSIC1-A—19/015-SE Marie Zafimehy 2 Master thesis - Gender, Intersectionality and Change ABSTRACT For decades, situational comedies — commonly named “sitcoms” — have been racially segregated on TV between Black-cast sitcoms and White-cast sitcoms. Extensive research has been led about representation of Black and White masculinities in this segregated context. This master thesis studies what happens when White and Black males are equally casted as main characters in contemporary sitcoms by offering a case-study of the 2011 sitcom New Girl (2011-2017). How is Black masculinity represented in New Girl, and in which ways does it intersect with contemporary societal issues (e.g. racial profiling, Black Lives Matter movement)? This case-study uses tools, methodologies and concepts, drawn from Black and Intersectional feminism as well as Feminist media studies. Based on a 25 episodes sample of the show, it implements Ronald Jackson’s traditional stereotypes classification and “Black masculine identity theory” (Jackson, 2006) to study representations of Black masculinity in New Girl, through its two main Black male characters, Winston and Coach. Given that representations of minorities in popular culture reflect and influence our contemporary society, the results offer new insights about how sitcoms, series and pop- culture productions in general can challenge traditional stereotypes and display a more progressive Black masculinity. Key words: Black feminism, Feminist media studies, Men and masculinities, Representation, New Girl, Sitcoms Marie Zafimehy 3 Master thesis - Gender, Intersectionality and Change ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Thank you to Johanna Hägg and Sebastian Ingels who successively shared their Netflix access codes with me.

  • Dos and Donts for Comforting Grieving Families After Suicide
Do's and Don'ts for Comforting Grieving Families After a Suicide BY DAWN ANDERSON , CP GUEST CONTRIBUTOR September 4, 2014|7:48 am "What miserable comforters you all are!" (Job 16:2b). (Courtesy of Dawn Anderson) After my husband died by suicide, most people were wonderful, but a few said inappropriate things that made this difficult time harder. I'm now a pastor and facilitator for Christian Survivors of Suicide support group in Dallas, and have heard many comforter "horror stories" similar to Job's over the years. I believe most "miserable comforters" genuinely want to help the grieving person, but are making the mistaken assumption that there are "magic words" that relieve pain. This misguided belief causes the would-be comforter to not realize how certain remarks actually feel to a person in deep grief. I asked survivors of loved ones' suicides to tell me the worst things people said to them in their times of grief, and have attempted to categorize those remarks by the feelings they invoked in the survivors. Minimizing the loss: "At least you have other children." "You're strong; you can handle it." "You have so much to be grateful for." "Well he was bipolar, right? Could have seen that coming." These types of comments add to the pain of grief because they attempt to reduce the loss and make it seem less painful, rather than recognizing the deep suffering the suicide survivor is experiencing. Giving unsolicited advice: "You need to get over it and move on." "Be strong." "You'll find a new girl." As with the minimizing remarks, a grieving person needs to feel sad in the present and not think about the future right now.

  • Outfit of the Day: We Want Hannah Simone's
Outfit Of The Day: We Want Hannah Simone’s Little Red Dress! by Laura Norkin | 3:59 pm, April 12th, 2013 Not that Zooey Deschanel doesn’t deserve all the props she gets for being the “adorkable” star of Fox’s New Girl, but time and again, Hannah Simone steals the scene. Last night at theVERTE Grades of Green annual fundraiser for environmental education, the star proved to be just as stunning as Shmidt’s elusive love interest is on the show. Spring temps heated up a bit this week (let’s not talk about how terrible it is in New York right now), and got us all in the mood for little dresses, lace and scalloping — all of which Simone delivered in her look at yesterday’s fête. The short, belted A-line is a refreshing break from the constant stream of body-con club get-ups that her character Cici rocks on the show, and it makes us think that Simone might have more in common with her nerd-chic co-star than the series lets on. However, you need more than just acting chops to pass as a model on TV, and in the photos below, it’s pretty clear that she gives good face. And can we talk about that hair? It’s quite possible we’ve never seen such a perfect pony. Check out her look, and then run out to buy more bronzer so you can mimic our outfit of the daythis weekend. That’s what we’re doing! In the videos below, Hannah and Zooey talk about the show, and there’s New Girl clips galore.

The purpose of this study was to (a) develop a better understanding of the grief process, (b) use writing as a method of understanding my personal grief process, (c) share my experiences of coping with grief and dissertation work to help other doctoral students face challenges in the struggle to complete their degrees, and (d) uncover suggestions to help guide university faculty and staff when offering support to other grieving doctoral students. The researcher examined her personal experiences with grief and dissertation work and then connected those experiences with those of the larger higher education community.
