Chapel Hill 2013 Approved by: Federico Luisetti Dino Cervigni Ennio Rao Lucia Binotti Amy Chambless © 2013 Metello Mugnai ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT METELLO MUGNAI: Religion Reconsidered: The Gospel according to the Italian Twentieth Century (Under the direction of Federico Luisetti) This dissertation centers around the representation of Jesus in twentieth- century Italian literature and cinema. In Italy, these rewritings have often been produced during moments of socio-political transition, many times by artists who are not religiously observant. My dissertation examines the ways in which five Italian artists (Papini, Pasolini, De André, Rossellini and Berto) engaged with the rewriting of the gospel, each in their own intellectual context and with specific political goals. In my dissertation, through a close reading of these new representations of Jesus, I seek to bring to the forefront the complex reasons why those Italian authors decided to rewrite the canonical gospels into their own gospel. These rewritings transform and mold the canonical gospels into new ones through the use of different media, such as novels, films, or music, but also through the use of different scenarios, characters, and episodes. This thesis investigates this process of rewriting, to find out the needs of these artists to re-write the gospels and thus create their own gospel. Consequently, my doctoral dissertation seeks to analyze Jesus as a narrative character, by investigating those artistic works that focus on the Jesus of the gospels.

    NR 904 02:28:2006 11:53 AM Page 5 Seeking Primitive Christianity in the Waldensian Valleys Protestants, Mormons, Adventists and Jehovah’s Witnesses in Italy Michael W. Homer ABSTRACT: During the nineteenth century, Protestant clergymen (Anglican, Presbyterian, and Baptist) as well as missionaries for new reli- gious movements (Mormons, Seventh-day Adventists and Jehovah’s Witnesses) believed that Waldensian claims to antiquity were important in their plans to spread the Reformation to Italy. The Waldensians, who could trace their historical roots to Valdes in 1174, developed an ancient origins thesis after their union with the Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century. This thesis held that their community of believers had preserved the doctrines of the primitive church. The competing churches of the Reformation believed that the Waldensians were “destined to fulfill a most important mission in the Evangelization of Italy” and that they could demonstrate, through Waldensian history and practices, that their own claims and doctrines were the same as those taught by the primitive church. The new religious movements believed that Waldensians were the best prepared in Italy to accept their new revelations of the restored gospel. In fact, the initial Mormon, Seventh-day Adventist, and Jehovah’s Witness converts in Italy were Waldensians. By the end of the century, however, Catholic, Protestant, and Waldensian scholars had debunked the thesis that Waldensians were proto-Protestants prior to Luther and Calvin. n June 1850 Mormon Apostle Lorenzo Snow (1814–1901) opened the Italian Mission in the Kingdom of Sardinia. Alice Parker (b. 1925) Alice Parker studied at Smith College and then received her master’s degree from the Julliard School where she studied choral conducting with Robert Shaw. Ms. Parker arranged many works with Robert Shaw of folksongs, hymns and spirituals, which formed an enduring repertoire for choruses all around the world. One of her many folksong arrangements, Hark, I Hear The Harps Eternal, evokes a strong rhythmic drive with two intriguing juxtaposed motives. This folksong arrangement has been a staple in the choral repertoire for 40 years. Il crée son orchestre puis va diriger l’orchestre Cetra ; il écrit aussi des musiques de films et dirige les plus grands chanteurs des années 1930 à 1950. Sanremo, avec ses festivals, est un des centres de diffusion de la chanson italienne (Voir notre dossier sur les festivals de Sanremo sur ce site italie-infos.fr) Par sa position géographique, la Ligurie est compressée entre des régions comme le Piémont, l’Émilie et la Toscane, et elle a reçu à l’Est l’influence du franco-provençal. Abstract This article adopt the perspective of de Sciences of religion for to show the existence of the literary genre of lists in Antiquity and Palestine during the post-exile, which were used to systematize and legitimize ideologically certain groups or interests religious-cultural. In Antiquity, there are lists of gods, angels, and kings. In this context, we find in late Judaism, upon the return from exile, other prophetic- eschatological lists in which marginal individuals are transformed into political persons.     Fabrizio De Andrè Di spirito anarchico e di formazione culturale di profondo spessore, De André ha pubblicato nella sua lunga carriera, dal 1960 al 1997, una ventina di album, un numero relativamente contenuto (mediamente un album ogni due anni) ma che non sorprende chi gli ha sempre riconosciuto una maggiore attenzione alla qualità rispetto alla quantità. Restio a mostrarsi in pubblico, negli ultimi anni di vita intraprese alcune tournée degne di nota (nel 1978 con la PFM, poi con una band via via arricchita da musicisti di valore). Nel 1979 fu rapito in Sardegna assieme alla sua compagna Dori Ghezzi.Da questa esperienza nacque uno dei suoi più bei dischi, quello conosciuto come l'album L'indiano. Ha avuto un figlio (Cristiano), nato nel 1962, dalla prima moglie Enrica Mignon, soprannominata Puny, e una figlia (Luisa Vittoria, chiamata Luvi) da Dori Ghezzi, entrambi musicisti e, negli ultimi tempi, insieme al padre in alcuni concerti. Nell'estate 1998 gli fu diagnosticato un tumore ai polmoni e interruppe la sua ultima turné. Morì l'11 gennaio 1999.
