Space, Place, and Protest: Austin’s Progressive Country Music Scene and the Negotiation of Texan Identities, 1968-1978 Travis David Stimeling A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of Music. Chapel Hill 2007 Approved by: Jocelyn R. Neal, Chair Jon W. Finson David García Mark Katz Philip Vandermeer © 2007 Travis David Stimeling ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT TRAVIS DAVID STIMELING: “Space, Place, and Protest: Austin’s Progressive Country Music Scene and the Negotiation of Texan Identities, 1968-1978” (Under the direction of Jocelyn R. Neal) The progressive country music movement developed in Austin, Texas, during the early 1970s as a community of liberal young musicians and concertgoers with strong interests in Texan country music traditions and contemporary rock music converged on the city. Children of the Cold War and the post-World War II migration to the suburbs, these “cosmic cowboys” sought to get back in touch with their rural roots and to leave behind the socially conservative world their parents had created for them. As a hybrid of country music and rock, progressive country music both encapsulated the contradictions of the cosmic cowboys in song and helped to create a musical sanctuary in which these youths could articulate their difference from mainstream Texan culture. Examining the work of the movement’s singer-songwriters (Michael Murphey, Guy Clark, Gary P. Nunn), western swing revivalists (Asleep at the Wheel, Alvin Crow and the Pleasant Valley Boys), and commercial country singers (Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings), this dissertation explores the proliferation of stock imagery, landscape painting, and Texan stereotypes in progressive country music and their role in the construction of Austin’s difference.

  • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.

Hit Songs Deconstructed Deconstructing Today's Hits for Songwriting Success http://reports.hitsongsdeconstructed.com Penn's Picks: Garage/Psych Volume 1 With the retro Psych/Garage trend in full effect, I thought it would be fun to kick off the inaugural Penn’s Pick Playlist with a look back to where it all began – the 1960s. Chances are that you’re already familiar with some of the more “mainstream” cuts of the era such as White Rabbit (Jefferson Airplane), The End (The Doors) and Hurdy Gurdy Man (Donovan), but I’m going to take you down the rabbit hole to hear some lesser known gems that stand their own alongside their more mainstream contemporaries. Slip Inside This House (1967): 13th Floor Elevators You can’t mention the word psychedelic without mentioning the 13th Floor Elevators. Formed in Austin, Texas in 1965 and led by the Psych legend Roky Erickson, the Elevators were one of the first, and best, representatives of the genre. Slip Inside This House is a cut from their second album, Easter Everywhere, and stands to this day as one of the true, yet lesser known gems of the era. War & Peace (1969): Alexander “Skip” Spence Following his departure from the ill-fated Moby Grape (there’s a lesson to be learned from releasing too many singles at once!), Alexander “Skip” Spence went into the studio to cut his legendary Oar album just a number of months after being committed to Bellevue following his attempt to cut down his Grape bandmates with an axe while in a delusional state.

  • Thirteenth Floor Elevators
Thirteenth Floor Elevators One of the first psychedelic rock bands to reach national prominence during the 1960s. Members included Tommy Hall (b. September 21, 1943), founding member, electric-jug player, 1965- 1969; Stacy Sutherland (b. Kerrville d. August 24, 1978, Houston, TX) , founding member, lead guitarist 1965-1969; Benny Thurman (b. Austin), founding member, bassist, 1965-1966; John Ike Walton (b. Kerrville), founding member, drummer, 1965-1966; Roger Kynard “Roky” Erickson (b. July 15, 1967 in Dallas; son of Evelyn Erickson, an opera singer), founding member, lead singer and rhythm guitarist, 1965-1969; Ronnie Leatherman (b. Texas), bassist, 1966-1967; Danny Thomas (b. South Carolina), drummer, 1966-1969; Dan Galindo (b. Texas), bassist, 1967-1969. The Elevators originated in 1965 in Central Texas with Tommy Hall, a part -time student at the University of Texas at Austin, who was studying philosophy, psychology, and chemical engineering. The band, which included three members from the Kerrville, Texas-based bluegrass group, the Lingsmen, began with Stacy Sutherland on lead guitar, Benny Thurman on bass (who also had played violin in the Lingsmen), and John Ike Walton on drums. Although not originally a musician himself, Tommy Hall performed on an amplified jug. Seventeen-year-old Roger Kynard “Roky” Erickson, the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for an Austin band named the Spades, completed the group on vocals. Hall‟s wife reportedly suggested the name the Thirteen Floor Elevators. Since most buildings do not have a thirteenth floor, the appellation seemed to imply that the band had the ability to travel to other dimensions and levels of consciousness.

  • Roky Erickson, Texas Psychedelic Music Legend, Has Died
Entertainment & Life Roky Erickson, Texas psychedelic music legend, has died By Peter Blackstock @Blackstock360 Posted May 31, 2019 at 4:58 PM Updated Jun 1, 2019 at 10:30 AM Legendary Texas musician Roky Erickson, who helped invent psychedelic rock in the 1960s with his band the 13th Floor Elevators, died Friday. The cause of death was not immediately known. Erickson was 71. Mikel Erickson, Roky’s brother, confirmed the news in a public Facebook post that read: “My brother Roky passed away peaceably today. Please allow us time. Music and laughter forever.” “The world lost a huge light and an incredible soul,” Sumner Erickson, another brother, said by phone Friday. “It wasn’t the easiest life, but he’s free of all that now.” An official statement from Erickson’s management confirmed that he died in Austin but did not provide details. “Erickson had a visionary zeal rarely seen in 1965 when he co-founded the 13th Floor Elevators,” the statement read. “The band’s original songs, many written with lyricist Tommy Hall, coupled with Erickson’s super-charged vocals and guitar, sparked the psychedelic music revolution in the mid-1960s, and led to a new role of what rock could be. Erickson never wavered from that path, and while he faced incredible challenges at different points in his life, his courage always led him on to new musical adventures, one he continued without compromise his entire life.” The statement also included a quote from ZZ Top’s Billy F. Gibbons, writing from the band’s European tour. Gibbons got to know Erickson in the 1960s when Gibbons was in the Houston band Moving Sidewalks, psych- music peers of the Elevators.
