Finson David García Mark Katz Philip Vandermeer © 2007 Travis David Stimeling ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT TRAVIS DAVID STIMELING: “Space, Place, and Protest: Austin’s Progressive Country Music Scene and the Negotiation of Texan Identities, 1968-1978” (Under the direction of Jocelyn R. Neal) The progressive country music movement developed in Austin, Texas, during the early 1970s as a community of liberal young musicians and concertgoers with strong interests in Texan country music traditions and contemporary rock music converged on the city. Children of the Cold War and the post-World War II migration to the suburbs, these “cosmic cowboys” sought to get back in touch with their rural roots and to leave behind the socially conservative world their parents had created for them. As a hybrid of country music and rock, progressive country music both encapsulated the contradictions of the cosmic cowboys in song and helped to create a musical sanctuary in which these youths could articulate their difference from mainstream Texan culture. Examining the work of the movement’s singer-songwriters (Michael Murphey, Guy Clark, Gary P. Nunn), western swing revivalists (Asleep at the Wheel, Alvin Crow and the Pleasant Valley Boys), and commercial country singers (Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings), this dissertation explores the proliferation of stock imagery, landscape painting, and Texan stereotypes in progressive country music and their role in the construction of Austin’s difference. -

FINAL SALUTE Each year we note the passing of influential creators, performers, and institutions. These passings occurred between SoonerCon 28 and the original date for SoonerCon 29. American actress and singer Peggy Lipton passed away May 11, 2019. Her best-known acting role was as undercover cop Julie Barnes on The Mod Squad, 1968-1973. She won a new generation of fans when she ran the Double R Diner as Norma Jennings, in Twin Peaks. Doris Day was a big-band singer, TV and film actress, and talk-show host. She won several awards for comedy and popularity. She was also an activist for animal welfare, lending her star power to several organizations bearing her name. She died May 13, 2019. Domestic cat Tardar Sauce was better known as the meme she unwittingly founded: Grumpy Cat. Dwarfism contributed to her scowling face, which graced ads for Friskies and General Mills Honey Nut Cheerios. The frowning feline cashed in her lives on May 14, 2019. The career of the inspired Tim Conway began in 1962 and lasted through TV, movies, voice-overs, and video games. Among his noted appearances were the goofy Dorf; four years on McHale ‘s Navy; eleven years on The Carol Burnett Show; several solo TV shows; and as Barnacle Boy, 1999-2012, on SpongeBob SquarePants. Conway took his final bow on May 14, 2019. Born in China, I.M. Pei moved to America in 1935 and in 1948 became a professional architect. He designed the John F. Kennedy Library, which took until 1979 to complete. In 1962 he was selected by OKC’s Urban Renewal Authority to redesign our downtown. -

The working title is Reformation Marriage and it deals with the relationship of husband and wife in the theology of Luther and Calvin. Austin tLive Musicex Capital Aof the sWorLd deStination anywheRe auStin, texaS continued it’s A Lot to Live up to, that Texas-sized boast about being the “Live Music Capital of the world.” Austin adopted it as their official slogan in 1991, with no voting or formal competition for the title involved, of course, apart from the city council members who did have the modesty to rule out the slightly more inflated “Live Music Capital of the Universe.” As such, it’s a claim to fame as open for debate as any truck stop’s self-proclaimed “world’s Best Coffee” or w“ orld Famous Chicken-Fried Steak.” The appropriate response to any such pronouncements should always be a certain degree of skepticism: “Prove it.” The key word in this case is “live.” For district. Daniel Coston Interview by: Gideon Smith Occasionally, I interview people I have crossed paths with over the years from artists to musicians, actors, authors, and more. I recently caught up with an old friend who is a world-class, ace photographer and author. Daniel Coston is a very cool, down-to-earth, incredible person who has worked with such artists as Johnny Cash, Son Volt, Big Star, Roky Erickson, and countless other great musicians. His photos have been featured in People Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, Us Weekly, TV Guide, Rolling Stone, FX, CMT, VH1 (TV networks), Mix, Spin, CMJ, Billboard, Blender, Maxim, Revolver, Playboy, Alt. Press, Stance, Acoustic Guitar, Guitar World, Guitar Player, Harp, Mojo, Q, Uncut (UK), Vanity Fair, and others. Coston is the author of several books, contributes to many local publications, and is always working on new projects. GIDEON: What first inspired you to begin photographing musicians and where did you start? DANIEL: I was first impressed as a kid by album covers. Beatles albums, ‘60’s psychedelic albums, and ‘50’s / ‘60’s blues and jazz albums, in particular. I can still name all of the photographers that worked with the Beatles. Album covers, album artwork, and promo pics were like a portal to this unknown world of music. I had toyed with taking pictures as a kid, but my heart was more in video and filmmaking back then. In 1995, I started writing sports for a weekly paper in Matthews, so I started taking photos for them. At the same time, I started writing for www.TangentsMag.com and taking photos of bands around Charlotte.
