There have been numerous theories adduced by his torians to account for this phenomenon. It is the purpose of this study to view the varying interpretations, analyze their shortcomings, and to put forth a different view of the controversy, one that more adequately expresses the deeply rooted religious nature of the movement, a movement not only of the eighth and ninth centuries but an idea which was nurtured in fertile soil of the Old Testament and Apostolic Christianity. The author wishes to express heartfelt appreciation to his thesis adviser, Dr. George Jewsbury, whose unflagging solicitude, support, and inspiration were instrumental in the preparation of this work. More evident than in the eighth century, the second period of the controversy on icons revealed the political background of the iconoclast movement, the efforts of the imperial power to subject the Church to their interests, but also the obstinate Assoc. Just like all the defenders of icons, they proved that the icon is the expression of the reality of the Incarnation of Christ, and its veneration is founded on the Christological teachings of the Church. THE STATE: THE STOUDITES AND THEIR RELATIONS WITH THE STATE AND ECCLESIASTICAL AUTHORITIES IN LATE EIGHTH- AND EARLY NINTH- CENTURY BYZANTIUM Alexey Stambolov During the long history of the Byzantine Empire, religious groups, especially monks,1 played an important role in society. For various reasons the monks were particularly infl uential in late eighth- and early ninth-century Byzantium, although their relations with the state and church authorities during this period were not always smooth and monks often opposed the offi cial state and ecclesiastical policy.2 Two parties – the Moderates and Radicals or Zealots – were active on the ecclesiastical scene of Byzantium at that time.3 The head of the Moderates, after his election to the patriarchal throne in 784, was Patriarch Tarasios (ca. 730–806), and the leaders of the Radicals were Sabbas and Theoctistus of Symboloi, Plato of Sakkoudion (ca. 735–814), and his nephew and successor, Theodore, later the abbot of Stoudios monastery in Constantinople (759–826). The two parties expressed different opinions for the fi rst time during the Seventh Ecumenical Council on the question of the lapsi, i.e., those who, during the fi rst iconoclastic period (730–787), had yielded to iconoclasm. The Radicals, uncompromising, demanded that the backsliding bishops, at least the ringleaders, should lose their sees, while the Moderates adopted a conciliatory policy, which the Radicals fi nally 1 The name “Stoudites” is used in the title more or less as an alternative to the term “the monks.” This is because of the distinguished role played by the Stoudites in late eighth- and early ninth-century Byzantium. -

Castration was a known but rarely applied measure in the political conflicts of the th7 and 8th century. Hence the two consecutive cases of castration of all sons of the deposed emperor Michael I Rhangabe (813) and the assassinated emperor Leo V the Armenian (820) deviated from the previous Byzantine practice. The paper establishes that in these cases the choice of castration as the most effective means of ensuring the future political disqualification of the princes and their families was a result of the strengthening dynastic principle, which was particularly noticeable in the cases of the descendents of Constantine V from his third marriage. It also highlights that castration was never used on the deposed emperor autokratōr, but only on the bearers of imperial dignities (co-emperors) or simply princes with no imperial title. In exam- ples where castration was used to ensure political disqualification, it was not a sanction for an individual wrongdoing (in other words, castration was not a penalty prescribed for a specific transgression); if these cases were a matter of punishment at all, the penalty was meant to sanction the entire bloodline (γένος) rather than the (innocent) individual. -

Abstract Status and gender studies are now well established paradigms of Byzantine social history. But academic enquiry has, so far, overlooked the significance of age. This is perhaps because most biographical accounts open with conception and birth, and move forwards to death, which seems so logical to us that the Life Course trajectory has not stood out as a defining characteristic of Byzantine biographical narratives. However, Byzantine authors do not present their characters as stagnant; characters are often shown to develop in persona across their lives. The study of age and life-stage is crucial to understanding the Byzantines’ evolving familial roles and societal responsibilities. This thesis deconstructs the Life Course patterns as presented to us by authors writing AD 518 to 1204, a critical period in the development of Byzantine culture.
