Online Appendix for Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue (2014) Some Principles of the Use of Macro-Areas Language Dynamics & Change Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue The following document lists the languages of the world and their as- signment to the macro-areas described in the main body of the paper as well as the WALS macro-area for languages featured in the WALS 2005 edi- tion. 7160 languages are included, which represent all languages for which we had coordinates available1. Every language is given with its ISO-639-3 code (if it has one) for proper identification. The mapping between WALS languages and ISO-codes was done by using the mapping downloadable from the 2011 online WALS edition2 (because a number of errors in the mapping were corrected for the 2011 edition). 38 WALS languages are not given an ISO-code in the 2011 mapping, 36 of these have been assigned their appropri- ate iso-code based on the sources the WALS lists for the respective language. This was not possible for Tasmanian (WALS-code: tsm) because the WALS mixes data from very different Tasmanian languages and for Kualan (WALS- code: kua) because no source is given. 17 WALS-languages were assigned ISO-codes which have subsequently been retired { these have been assigned their appropriate updated ISO-code. In many cases, a WALS-language is mapped to several ISO-codes. As this has no bearing for the assignment to macro-areas, multiple mappings have been retained. 1There are another couple of hundred languages which are attested but for which our database currently lacks coordinates. -

RESUMO A proposta desta investigação consistiu em proporcionar uma visão geral sobre os Rikbaktsa, trazendo à tona alguns aspectos relacionados ao seu processo de desconstrução e reconstrução cultural, com o intuito de identificar os significados que este povo tem atribuído ao seu processo de escolarização para a manutenção do seu idioma. Dessa forma, objetivou-se compreender a cultura Rikbaktsa a partir do reconhecimento da importância da língua para manutenção dos aspectos culturais, atrelado ao papel relevante das escolas indígenas. Para cumprir tal propósito, definiram-se os seguintes objetivos específicos: relacionar os referenciais teóricos referentes à cultura Rikbaktsa especificamente os direcionados ao processo de desconstrução e reconstrução cultural; identificar as contribuições das escolas indígenas para a manutenção da língua Rikbaktsa; e reconhecer a identidade do povo Rikbaktsa como elemento fundamental para a preservar a língua viva. Além dessas metas, pretendeu-se, também, responder à pergunta da investigação Como a educação escolar indígena pode favorecer na manutenção da língua Rikbaktsa? Dessa maneira, a presente pesquisa organizou-se sob o tipo descritiva e bibliográfica, já que, a partir de dados já coletados e de referenciais relacionados ao tema, descreveu e fundamentou teoricamente os pontos elencados ao longo do marco teórico. -

The present treatise is an introduction to a larger one now in course of preparation. While this larger work is to discuss the distribution of the bow and arrow throughout South America, and to widen the knowledge of her mixed populations by means of a thorough investi- gation of material in museums and the study of literature, it is the aim of this brochure to point out the system only in general outline, with the comparison of the materials furnished for the classification of bow and arrow, and to set forth for a circumscribed region—the Mato Grosso—how, through the harmonizing of different tribal groups, ethnographic types arise; what share the several associated tribes have had in this creation of groups; and, on the other hand, what ethnographic development within the group each tribe has undergone. It will not be possible to make an extended review of individual tribes in a preliminary description of the bow and the arrow. This is in view for the later work, and at this time it will be presented only so far as an ethnographic characterization is necessary. In the same way here the review will be only so extended concerning the meaning' of these weapons for a tribe as to reveal some variation of the arts by which an advancing or retarding momentum in the ethnographic development has been given. -

Artículo AS LÍNGUAS INDÍGENAS NA UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DE SÃO CARLOS Edmar Neves da Silva [email protected] Departamento de Letras - UFSCar (DL) Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar), Brasil RESUMO Com um programa de Ações Afirmativas que garante uma vaga anual para candidatos indígenas em todos os cursos da graduação, a Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar) tornou-se referência nacional no acesso dos povos indígenas do Brasil ao ensino superior. Atualmente a UFSCar conta com 150 estudantes indígenas de várias etnias em seus quatro campi. Assim, a Universidade sofreu um impacto extremamente positivo com as Políticas de Ações Afirmativas, tornando-se um grande polo de diversidade cultural e linguística. O presente artigo apresenta um perfil geral dos estudantes indígenas da UFSCar e um mapeamento das línguas indígenas faladas por esses estudantes. THE INDIGENOUS LANGUAGES AT UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DE SÃO CARLOS ABSTRACT With an affirmative action program that guarantees one annual vacancy for indigenous candidates in all of undergraduate courses, the Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar) has become a national reference in the access of Brazilian indigenous people to higher education. Currently UFSCar has 150 indigenous students from various ethnicities at its four campuses. Thus, the university has had an extremely positive impact with affirmative action policies, becoming a major pole of cultural and linguistic diversity. Attridge ABSTRACT This paper seeks to explore the early twentieth century trend of ethnographic adventure filmmaking. A subgenre of the ethnographic film, these works blended ethnographic observations with scripted and staged adventure stories, advancing popular tropes of indigenous first contact and the superiority of Western civilization. Focusing on a 1931 expedition to the Amazon which resulted in the creation of the first sync-sound ethnographic adventure film, titled Matto Grosso: The Great Brazilian Wilderness, I argue that despite flaws in its conception, production, and media coverage, this film serves as an example of how non-academic sources of knowledge production can still create important primary documents for indigenous source communities. The social importance of the indigenous languages The culture of every human society is the result of a specifi c res- ponse to the challenges nature and other human societies have imposed through millennia to human survival in physical and mental health. Even the culture of the least human society is a complete universe of integrated knowledge, strongly bound to the milieu where it was developed but also accumulating experience of the remotest past. The native language of a society is not only the means of communication that keeps social solidarity, but it is also the basic means of organizing and storing experience and knowledge. Every human language is unique in the way it codifi es knowledge and experience, for it has been shaped and reshaped following the needs for the adequate expression of an extremely diversifi ed and variable complex of mental representations.
