Chapter VII: Conclusìon 153 Note s 159 CHAPTER I: I NTRODUCTION SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY Durìng the last decade, M'injung Theology has been djscussed wÍde'ly in Korea as well as jn Asia.l Miniung Theology has evolved through the efforts of Korean theological scholars who themselves have experienced "sufferjng of the Minjung",2 due to their particìpation in the strugg'le for soc'ial iust'ice and human rìghts. The impact of such experiences caused theological scholars to re-interpret Korean history and Church h'istory, bjblical tradjtions and h'istorical events, and the identity of the Christjans and the reality of the minjung in the Korean context. Therefore, they have begun to pursue the work of defining the specific theolog'icaì tasks in the Korean context rather than the conventional expl ìcation of Christian doctrine. This thesis will discuss the nature of M'injung Theoìogy, its perspectìves, 'its sources and the question of why ìt is a theology of minjung.".3 In a sense, this study wìì'l deal with the theologica'l task, both theoretjcal ly and practicaì ly, wh'ich l'ies ahead of Christian- ìty and the minjung. Regarding "the crisis of Christian identity"4 and "the tens'ion of confrontation"5 in Korea, it'is very ìmportant to formulate a Korean contextual Theoìogy or Minjung Theology, wh'ich can ìnterpret the reaììty of m'injung for their l'iberat'ion and whìch can be committed to indigenìzation and to social and pol itica'l reluuun.u.6 Th'is means that the Korean church as well as the churches in the Third Wor.ld must begìn to understand the social context of the peopìe, so that theology.is forced to respond to the relevant jssues of minjung such L as socio-econ0mic confl icts and the pol jticaì system of dictatorshìp. Miniunq, who has been oppressed, does not need metaphysìcaì theology that has sometimes marked Western Theoìogy, but they demand an active theology to artjculate their faith'in order to overcome varjous forms of bondage. In Latjn Amerjca Juan Luis Segundo seeks to develop a theoìogy 'in close relat'ionship with a critical anaìysis of socìety and with a commjtment to change society,T and in the United States the theoìogy of James Cone is worked out in the context of a commitment to the black tradìtion and the aspìrations of black people.S Sim'ilarly to study Minjung Theology means to define a theoìogy that grows out of the Iife of the people. The "Theoìogy in Act'ion" workshops held in Manila and Kuala Lumpur in 1972 and 1973 respectively, under the auspices of the Christian Conference jn Asia came to this conclusion: Theology is beginning to pìck up theologica'l themes in the lives of the peopìe, to relate to sociaì ana'lysis and soc'ial 'investi gati on whi ch exposes conf I'icts i n soc'iety.

    International Voices in Biblical Studies STORIES OF MINJUNG THEOLOGY STORIES This translation of Asian theologian Ahn Byung-Mu’s autobiography combines his personal story with the history of the Korean nation in light of the dramatic social, political, and cultural upheavals of the STORIES OF 1970s. The book records the history of minjung (the people’s) theology that emerged in Asia and Ahn’s involvement in it.     Tongues and Trees: Towards a Green Pentecostal Pneumatology by AARON JASON SWOBODA A thesis submitted to the University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY School of Philosophy, Theology and Religion College of Arts and Law The University of Birmingham July 2011 1 ABSTRACT This thesis develops a Pentecostal ecotheology by utilizing key pneumatological themes that emerge from the Pentecostal tradition. It examines and utilizes the salient Pentecostal and Charismatic voices that have stimulated ecotheology in the Pentecostal tradition and situates them within the broader context of Christian ecumenical ecotheologies (Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant, and Ecofeminist). These Pentecostal expressions are placed in dialogue with the particular ecological pneumatologies of Denis Edwards (Roman Catholic), Mark Wallace (Protestant), and Sallie McFague (Ecofeminist). The thesis advances a novel approach to Pentecostal ecotheology through a pneumatology of the Spirit baptized creation, the charismatic creational community, the holistic ecological Spirit, and the eschatological Spirit of ecological mission. Significantly, this thesis is the first substantive contribution to a Pentecostal pneumatological theology of creation with a particular focus on the Pentecostal community and its significance for the broader ecumenical community.     THREE TALKS ON MINJUNG THEOLOGY HYUN Younghak The three talks on Minjung Theology that follow below were submitted to INTER-RELIGIO for publication by Paul Sye, former Director of the Institute for the Study of Religion and Theology in Seoul (see NEWS AND COMMUNICATIONS), and are reproduced here with the author’s permission. They were originally delivered on April 13, April 20, and November 4, 1982, at the James Memorial Chapel of the Union Theological Seminary in New York. After several frustrating attempts to edit the pieces independently of consultation with the author, it was decided to print them here just as they appeared in the original text. We think you will agree that the unpolished edge of Dr. Hyun’s language reflects the sense of immediacy as well as the sense of distance that minjung theologians feel in attempting to reach a western audience. Although the context is clearly Christian and missionary, the problems it raises suggest an altogether different base for interreligious dialogue with the Korean minjung than the ones traditionally generated from within academic circles.     PCTS, Seoul, 12 May 2010 The Past, Present and Future of Korean Theology: Pneumatological Perspectives Kirsteen Kim∗ Introduction I bring greetings from the United Kingdom, and especially from two organisations: From Leeds Trinity University College, where I teach, and from Edinburgh 2010, the centenary of the 1910 World Missionary Conference, of which I am Research Coordinator. In this centenary year, I have spent a lot of time reflecting on the Korean Protestant story as a symbol of the shifts in Christian mission since 1910. The delegates in 1910 were excited to hear reports that ‘Almost the whole population of Korea is now ready to hear the Gospel’,1 which they thought might be the ‘first non-Christian nation evangelised in the history of modern missions’.2 They regarded this as a sign of the work of the Holy Spirit, but they tended to restrict the work of the Holy Spirit to supernatural power which brings ‘success’ in evangelisation, rather than the creative power of God who challenges earthly kingdoms.3 So their imperialist approach and racial categories led them to conclude that Japan, which they regarded as the most civilized country in Asia, was destined to rule its neighbours and that therefore the evangelization of Japan was crucial to the rest of Asia.4. In 2010 we see how the delegates of 1910 underestimated the power of the Spirit in the Korean people, how the freedom of the Spirit overcomes human political systems, and that, contrary to expectations in 1910, it is Koreans today who are evangelising the rest of Asia.

Such changes challenge the church to respond to new developments in the secular world. One such development (a long time in the making) is that the everyday life of every human being on the planet is being affected more and more profoundly by a kind of generic capitalism that prefers to remain faceless and anonymous but which prosecutes it interests with a brutality and ruthlessness that take no account of human beings who are themselves neither powerful nor influential - but who may reside on land replete with the kind of natural resources which constitute the essential raw materials necessary for capitalist expansion. It is not only human life that suffers in this rapidly changing world: forms of planetary life suffer. In the context of what we have said about global market dynamics, we are compelled to ask ourselves searching questions about the relationship between God and humans, humans and other human beings, and hnmans and other forms of planetary life.

REFLECTIONS ON THE ANALYSIS OF RYU TONG-SHIK (YU TONG-SHIK) Kirsteen Kim Abstract: Korean Christianity is known around the world for its amazing growth and dynamism, and this includes a thriving theological life, much of which is inaccessible without knowledge of the Korean language. Ryu Tong-Shik (Yu Tong-shik) was one of the first Koreans to attempt to trace the development of Korean theology in his seminal work, Han’guk shinhak- 5i kwangmaek (The Mineral Veins of Korean Theology; first published 1982). This paper introduces Ryu’s theological thought and investigates a particu- lar observation he makes about two distinct patterns of Holy Spirit move- ment in the Korean church, which he designates ‘paternal’ and ‘maternal’ and identifies both before and after the liberation from Japan in 1945. The paper examines the grounds of Ryu’s claim, which derive from the religious history of Korea, and suggests the relevance of this schema to other soci- eties and to pneumatological reflection in general. Only 130 years1 since the ‘hermit kingdom’ first opened its doors to Western influence, estimates of the proportion of Christians in South Korea range from 26% of the population, according to the CIA, to 41% in the World Christian Encyclopedia.2 The latter figure is almost cer- tainly over optimistic; however, even in the lower case, this is the largest Christian percentile of any country in Asia apart from Georgia and the Philippines.
