Choi: Latin America and Liberation Theology 76 Comparative Civilizations Review No. 49 LATIN AMERICA AND LIBERATION THEOLOGY DONG SULL CHOI, BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY A central and fundamental theme in most world religions is libera- tion. Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism all seek liberation from the endless cycles of birth and death until the adherents attain mok- sha, nirvana, or self-realization. Monotheistic faiths, such as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, promise and teach liberation from oppression, sin, and the fear of death. Biblical traditions and messages, including the story of the Israelites' flight from Egyptian bondage, have been the important historical sources or foundations for various searches for lib- eration. The rise of "liberation theology" in the Christian world is one of the most conspicuous and significant developments of the past several decades in this global village. Regarded by some theologians as the most important religious movement since the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century, liberation theology characterizes a variety of Christian movements in many parts of the world, including Asia, Africa, Western Europe, North America, and especially Latin America. -

Teresianum 45 (1994/2) 439-455 THE POINT OF DEPARTURE OF FUNDAMENTAL THEOLOGY EDWIN DINIZ The course of fundamental theology is still subject to morphological changes and the various endeavours in the course of the history of theology show, that this course still re mains to be defined, if it is to be defined at all. Attempts have been made in this brief reflection to give a short historical glimpse on the subject and then to decipher its identity in the context of theological studies. Finally, without entering the field of the scope or aim of fundamental theology, attention has been concentrated on the point of de parture in the study of fundamental theology. Unforgettable Landscapes: Attachments to the Past in Hellenistic Armenia Lori Khatchadourian Historical cartographers are quintessential memory specialists. Given the task of determining the relative importance of one hamlet, village, town, or city from another, those who map the past exercise the right to erase the memory of a place itself, along with the memories of the peoples, histories, and monuments through which that place was constituted. As reviewers of the Barrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World recently wrote, “all maps—in one way or another, aggressively or unconsciously—‘lie’ to us” (Alcock, Dey and Parker 2001, 458). This discriminating duty of the cartographer, when paired with the narrow approach of traditional classical scholarship on the Near East during the Hellenistic era (ca. 323-31 BC), has resulted in rather peculiar maps of the period: undiscovered places that are mentioned in Greek and Roman sources are marked, while archaeological sites whose names do not appear in this particular body of literature are not. The dominant narrative concerning the Hellenistic Near East has radically privileged cities thought to have been havens of Hellenism, due to the celebrated works of Greek art their inhabitants produced. For the student of classical archaeology, the likely impression of the Near East in the enigmatic period between the collapse of the Persian Empire and the rise of the Roman Empire is like that of a photograph with well-focused, fore grounded, Hellenized hubs—such as Pergamon, Antioch, Ephasos—set against a soft-focused, hazy background of 1 places that were perhaps touched by the ripple effects of Hellenism, or stagnantly persisted as vestigially Persian. -

As of November, the market share for Korean films in the domestic market stood at 55 percent, which indicates that the yearly market share of Korean films will be over 50 percent for the third year in a row. In the international arena as well, Korean films were invited to major international film festivals including Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Locarno, and San Sebastian and received a warm reception from critics and audiences. It is often said that the current prosperity of Korean cinema is due to the strong commitment and policies introduced by the KIM Dae-joong government in 1999 to promote Korean films. -
Welcome to Korea Day: from Diasporic to Hallyu Fan-Nationalism
International Journal of Communication 13(2019), 3764–3780 1932–8036/20190005 Welcome to Korea Day: From Diasporic to Hallyu Fan-Nationalism IRINA LYAN1 University of Oxford, UK With the increasing appeal of Korean popular culture known as the Korean Wave or hallyu, fans in Israel among Korean studies students have joined—and even replaced— ethnic Koreans in performing nationalism beyond South Korea’s borders, creating what I call hallyu fan-nationalism. As an unintended consequence of hallyu, such nationalism enables non-Korean hallyu fans to take on the empowering roles of cultural experts, educators, and even cultural ambassadors to promote Korea abroad. The symbolic shift from diasporic to hallyu nationalism brings to the fore nonnationalist, nonessentialist, and transcultural perspectives in fandom studies. In tracing the history of Korea Day from the 2000s to the 2010s, I found that hallyu fan-students are mobilized both by the macro mission to promote a positive image of Korea in their home societies and by the micro motivation to repair their own, often stigmatized, self-image. Keywords: transcultural fandom studies, hallyu, Korean Wave, Korean studies, Korea Day, diasporic nationalism While talking with Israeli students enrolled in Korean studies (mostly female fans of Korean popular culture) in an effort to understand their motivations behind organizing Korea Day and promoting Korean culture in Israel in general, I was surprised when some of them used the Hebrew word hasbara, which literally translates as “explanation.” As a synonym for propaganda, hasbara refers to the public diplomacy of Israel that aims to promote a positive image of Israel to the world and to counter its delegitimization. -

"Jesu Bhakta" Hindu Christian Theology
Gospel Ferment in India among both Hindus and Christians Jesus, My Master: “Jesu Bhakta” Hindu Christian Theology by Herbert Hoefer n my last trip to India, Professor Ravi Tiwari of Gurukul Lutheran Theological College in Chennai kindly gave me a copy Oof his biography of his father, a Brahmin convert and theological professor: Yisu Das: Witness of a Convert (ISPCK, Delhi, 2000), Dr. Yisu Das, of course, was a member of the church, though—as with most non- dalit converts—he did not fit in. As I mused on the elements of Dr. Das’ theology, I started pulling together other experiences of theological thinking that I had found among “Christian Bhaktis” (as Dr. Das called himself), particularly among the non-baptized believers in Christ. At the start of Professor Tiwari’s stimulating biography, he provides the sum- mary of his father’s faith, as he had presented it to a conference in 1963. Listen to “The elements of the Christian Faith, which have appealed to me” (p. 5): 1. The presence of the living Christ. He quotes the Christian mystic Thomas a Kempis: “That man only is rich with whom Jesus delights to dwell.” 2. A person worthy of our devotion. In contrast, Dr. Das speaks of the Hindu Bhakti tradition in which “the devotees have a nobler character than the gods they wor- ship.” I am reminded of the anthropological axiom: People become like the gods they worship. 3. Jesus’ teaching of God as our personal Father. “This teaching has given to Christian prayer simplicity, directness, dignity, which is seldom found elsewhere.” 4.
