Cowen Marine Biology and Fisheries Division, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, University of Miami, 4600 Rickenbacker Causeway, Miami, Florida 33149-1098, USA ABSTRACT: The cryptic nature of many elopomorph species and their occupation of minimally explored habitats have led to the underestimation of their importance as a component of regional bio- diversity. Additionally, it had led to their exclusion from studies that seek to resolve the processes and life history traits important in determining the geographic distributions of species. Collections of the larval stage of elopomorphs provide one means of addressing regional diversity in this taxa. Plankton tows around Barbados during 4 separate years collected 68 identifiable taxa of the leptocephalus lar- val form unique to elopomorphs. While most of these species have either been collected as adults in the Lesser Antilles or upcurrent in the Guyanas, there remained 11 species whose adults are not known from either biogeographic area, and 7 leptocephalus types of species not described as adults. To determine whether these leptocephali were likely to be the product of local spawning, or alterna- tively expatriates from the Guyanas, temporal patterns of length frequency distributions and abun- dance of each species were analyzed with respect to regional oceanographic conditions. High abun- dances and small leptocephali of species probably expatriated from the Guyanas were found to coincide with periods when North Brazil Current (NBC) rings were present around Barbados and locally produced coral reef fish larvae were flushed away from the sample area. -

The new genus is characterized within the subfamily Ophichthinae by the tail which is much longer than the head and trunk; median fins low; origin of dorsal fin well in advance of pectoral-fin base; lower part of pectoral-fin base arising opposite upper one-fourth of gill opening, and occupying the upper one third of gill opening; gill openings sublateral, elongate, nearly vertical and crescentic, shorter than isthmus; eye moderately developed, its center above posterior third of upper jaw, its posterior margin well in advance of rictus; jaws moderately developed, lower jaw fits into upper jaw; snout conical, tapering evenly, its tip rounded; underside of snout with a median sulcus exposing the teeth in advance of the anterior nostril bases; anterior nostrils within short tubes; a large, succulent-leaf shaped flap behind anterior nostril; posterior nostril a hole above upper lip; teeth conical, erect, numerous, and small, anteriorly biserial and posteriorly uniserial on maxillary and biserial on mandible; a series of 6 vomerine teeth; and two preopercular pores. -

3.0 Description, Distribution and Use of Essential Fish Habitat 3.0 DESCRIPTION, DISTRIBUTION, AND USE OF ESSENTIAL FISH HABITAT 3.1 Estuarine and Inshore Habitats 3.1.1 Estuarine 3.1.1.1 Estuarine Emergent (Saltmarsh and Brackish Marsh) 3.1.1.1.1 Description and Ecological Role and Function The saltmarsh is a type of wetland. Wetlands are classified on the basis of their hydrology, vegetation and substrate. One classification system proposed by Cowardin et al., (1979) and used by the USFWS classifies wetlands into five ecological systems. Estuarine emergents fall into two of these systems, the Estuarine and Marine. The Estuarine wetland is described as tidal wetlands in low-wave-energy environments, where the salinity is greater than 0.5 parts per thousand (ppt) and is variable owing to evaporation and the mixing of seawater and freshwater. Marine wetlands are described as tidal wetlands that are exposed to waves and currents of the open ocean and have a salinity of greater than 30 ppt. A saltmarsh, as defined by Beeflink (1977), is a “natural or semi-natural salt tolerant grassland and dwarf brushwood on the alluvial sediments bordering saline water bodies whose water level fluctuates either tidal or nontidally”. The flora comprise of erect, rooted, herbaceous hydrophytes dominated by salt- tolerant perennial plants (Cowardin et al. 1979). Structure and function of a saltmarsh are influenced by tide, salinity, nutrients and temperature. The saltmarsh can be a stressful environment to plants and animals, with rapid changes occurring in these abiotic variables (Gosselink 1980; Gosselink et al. 1974). Although species diversity may be lower than in other systems, the saltmarsh is one of the most biologically productive ecosystems in the world (Teal 1962; Teal and Teal, 1969). -
