Reef Fish Spawning Aggregations in Aceh, Sumatra: Local Knowledge of Occurrence and Status Authors: Campbell S.J., Mukmunin, A., Prasetia, R The Wildlife Conservation Society, Indonesian Marine Program, Jalan Pangrango 8, Bogor 16141, Indonesia Reef Fish Spawning Aggregations (FSA) are critical in the life cycle of the fishes that use this reproductive strategy as sources of larvae, but are also highly vulnerable to over exploitation. With the exception of the Komodo (Pet et al. 2005) little if any research has been focused on FSAs in Indonesia. Interview surveys were conducted among fishing communities on the island of Weh in northern Aceh in order to determine the level of awareness of FSAs among fishers; which reef fish species form FSAs; sites of aggregation formation; seasonal patterns; and to assess fishing pressure on and status of FSAs. Results show that many fishers possess reliable knowledge of spawning areas, species and times. Possible FSAs were reported from a number of areas on Weh island inside and outside protected areas. Of the 47 species of fish mentioned by respondents, we conclude that six species are very likely to form spawning aggregations in marine waters of Weh island. All six species were mentioned by more than 10 fishers, and included Bolbometopoton muricatum (Scaridae: Bumpheaded parrotfish), Cepahpholis miniata (Serranidae: Coral grouper) Variola louti (Serranidae: Yellow Edged Lyretail), Cheilinus undulatas (Labridae: Napolean wrasse), Thunnus albacares (Yellow fin tuna) and Caranx lugubris (Carangidae: Black Jack Trevally). FSAs in Aceh were areas targeted by fishers, although many were inside existing marine protected areas where prohibitions on netting from boats are in place. -
Fish Assemblage of the Mamanguape Environmental Protection Area, NE Brazil: Abundance, Composition and Microhabitat Availability Along the Mangrove-Reef Gradient

Rosa1 and Ierecê Lucena Rosa1 Reefs, mangroves and seagrass biotopes often occur in close association, forming a complex and highly productive ecosystem that provide significant ecologic and economic goods and services. Different anthropogenic disturbances are increasingly affecting these tropical coastal habitats leading to growing conservation concern. In this field-based study, we used a visual census technique (belt transects 50 m x 2 m) to investigate the interactions between fishes and microhabitats at the Mamanguape Mangrove-Reef system, NE Brazil. Overall, 144 belt transects were performed from October 2007 to September 2008 to assess the structure of the fish assemblage. Fish trophic groups and life stage (juveniles and adults) were recorded according to literature, the percent cover of the substrate was estimated using the point contact method. Our results revealed that fish composition gradually changed from the Estuarine to the Reef zone, and that fish assemblage was strongly related to the microhabitat availability, as suggested by the predominance of carnivores at the Estuarine zone and presence of herbivores at the Reef zone. Fish abundance and diversity were higher in the Reef zone and estuary margins, highlighting the importance of structural complexity. A pattern of nursery area utilization, with larger specimens at the Transition and Reef Zone and smaller individuals at the Estuarine zone, was recorded for Abudefduf saxatilis, Anisotremus surinamensis, Lutjanus alexandrei, and Lutjanus jocu. -

Laguna de Tamiahua is ecologically and economically important as a nursery area that favours the recruitment of species that sustain traditional fisheries. It has been studied previously, though not throughout its whole area, and considering the variety of habitats that sustain these fisheries, as well as an increase in population growth that impacts the system. The objectives of this study were to present an updated list of fish species, data on special status, new records, commercial importance, dominance, density, ecotic position, and the spatial and temporal distribution of species in the lagoon, together with a comparison of Tamiahua with 14 other Gulf of Mexico lagoons. Materials and methods. Fish were collected in August and December 1996 with a Renfro beam net and an otter trawl from different habitats throughout the lagoon. The species were identified, classified in relation to special status, new records, commercial importance, density, dominance, ecotic position, and spatial distribution patterns. -

BULLETIN OF MARINE SCIENCE, 34(1): 21-59,1984 DESCRIPTION OF PORKFISH LARVAE (ANISOTREMUS VIRGINICUS, HAEMULIDAE) AND THEIR OSTEOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT Thomas Potthoff, Sharon Kelley, Martin Moe and Forrest Young ABSTRACT Wild-caught adult porkfish (Anisotremus virginicus, Haemulidae) were spawned in the laboratory and their larvae reared. A series of 35 larvae 2.4 mm NL to 21.5 mm SL from 2 to 30 days old or older (larvae of unknown age) was studied for pigmentation characteristics. Cleared and stained specimens were examined for meristic and osteological development. Cartilaginous neural and haemal arches develop first anteriorly, at the center, and posteriorly, above and below the notochord, but ossification of the vertebral column is from anterior in a posterior direction. Epipleural rib pairs develop from bone, but pleural rib pairs develop from cartilage first and then ossify. The second dorsal, anal and caudal fins develop rays first and simultaneously, followed by first dorsal fin spine development. The pectoral and pelvic fins are the last of all fins to develop rays. All bones basic to a perciform pectoral girdle develop with cartilaginous radials present between the pectoral fin ray bases. Development and structure of pre dorsal bones and dorsal and anal fin pterygiophores were studied. All bones basic to a perciform caudal complex developed and no fusion of any of these bones was observed in the adults. Radial cartilages developed ventrad in the hypural complex. The hyoid arches originated from cartilage but the branchiostegal rays formed from bone. The development and anatomy of the branchial skeleton were studied. Spines develop on the four bones of the opercular series in larvae and juveniles but are absent in the adults. -

Being built for speed, Caranx lugubris have a steep sloping head with a body that tapers down to a very narrow tail (Lin and Shao, 1999). The colour of the body and head are almost uniformly greyish-brown to black, they have a deeply forked tail (Fig. 1), and the average body length is around 70cm (Humann, 1989). The teeth of the upper jaw include strong canines, and there are about 8 upper and 18-21 lower gill-rakers on the gill arches. DISTRIBUTION. Caranx lugubris is widely distributed in tropical waters worldwide (Fig. 2), with a circumtropical distribution (Smith-Vaniz, 1986). This includes the waters of the Indian Ocean, Pacific, the Atlantic including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean (Smith-Vaniz et al., 2015). This species is a bentho-pelagic marine fish that dwells in coral reefs, at the edges of reefs and rocks (Carpenter, 2002). Bandeirantes 3900, Ribeirao Preto, SP 14040-901, Brazil Abstract. —Six species of sharpnose puffers are herein recognized from the Atlantic Ocean, three of which are described as new: Canthigaster figueiredoi, n. sp. from the east coast of South America, Canthigaster jamestyleri, n. sp. from deep reefs off the southeast coast of the United States and the Gulf of Mexico, and Canthigaster supramacula, n. sp. from the west coast of Africa. Canthigaster capistratus (Lowe 1839), described from the Madeira Islands and previously considered to be a junior synonym of C. rostrata (Bloch, 1786), is revalidated and redescribed; it's known distribution extends from the Macaro- nesian Region to the Mediterranean. Canthigaster rostrata (Bloch, 1786), re- stricted to shallow-water northwestern Atlantic reefs, and C sanctaehelenae (Giinther, 1870), endemic to the mid-Atlantic islands of Ascension and St. Helena, also are diagnosed and redescribed. An identification key based on pigment pattern features is provided for all six Atlantic species of Canthigaster. BORTONE To examine the diets of 25 demersal artificial-reef-associated fish species, 540 fishes were collected with spears and hand-nets off Panama City, Florida, in the summer of 1993. Fishes were preserved whole in the field. Stomach contents were later analyzed by frequency of occurrence, numerical abundance, and percent volume. These measures were combined into an Index of Relative Importance (IRI).
